    Hi there, apprentice of HEMA longsword as well as rapier here. I can understand why you'd do the "breaking wrist" or flicking of the wrist to slow down the strike for safety concerns, however this action is not healthy for your joints. It's much safer for your wrist long term to follow through cleanly! If your boffers are stinging too much, and it's too hot for extra layers to prevent that, perhaps some thought could be put into limitations of the speed of combat?
    We do this in HEMA during training, though I see a potential issue of limited speed in a competitive situation, because even when you are not competing, the instinct to suddenly speed up and defend yourself can be hard to shake at first.
    Just my thoughts on the matter anyway, thank you for posting this video and explaining some aspects of LARP combat, which I'm going to be seeing firsthand next weekend. :D

    • @swordandbuckler
      @swordandbuckler Před 2 lety

      you can pull a blow by disrupting your body mechanics rather then the foolish notion of thinking you can stop the blow at the end.
      You loose some speed but not so much as you thing. The flicking makes me cringe because f they are moving forward with their body they might accidently generate a fairly powerful blow by accelerating the sword at impact.

    Being someone slightly interested in history and HEMA (historical European martial arts) could I say a couple of things and correct a couple of things? First, I'm somewhat impressed by the fact that a lot of the principles of swordplay are actually talked about. The stance you used for sword and shield looks like a forward longsword stance. However, what you said about techniques isn't necessarily true: Learning arming sword (a kind of one handed medieval sword), from what I've been told, WILL help with all kinds of melee fighting (polearms, etc). The techniques themselves, not necessarily (but often they are similar) but things like distance, timing, footwork, and direction are skills and abilities that are improved in general. Also, you said something about leather armor "historically", but leather armor was fairly rare, from what I've seen. Not unheard of, but mostly with only a few smaller pieces of armor. I understand that this isn't intended to be historically accurate combat (where you're constantly trying to be dangerous), but I think information is good to have in general. I could be wrong, too, as I didn't cite my sources (so you shouldn't always trust me, even if I think I'm right), so feel free to do some research yourself :)I really like Schola gladitoria's videos

      I may have another constructive critic (I hope). You guys seem to put the accent on safety (which is great) but in my opinion, you should be more careful with edge alignement. Flat hits can hurt a LOT as there is next to no foam between your friend and the stick in the sword. Hitting with the edge would make the fights both safer and more realistic.

    • @ikiviher
      @ikiviher Před 5 lety

      @@vonsaponatheim3736 not necessarily since, typically the edge is a smaller surface area so it's more force on a smaller area, which can hurt like a bitch. Especially of the person doesn't know what they're doing or if the foam is harder as it is with many latex weapons

    Im all for different ways of playing larp. i personally avoid health systems and use basically "lightsaber rules" which means hits are severes and cripples but after watching this i believe im gonna stop counting finger taps and toe grazes as legitemate RP injuries. Anybody interested in larping, even just casually like i do, should look into home made weapons. pvc piping and foam raps are effective in making all sorts of spears, glaves, hammers, axes and of course swords. We even have youth bows at 15lb draws which we fire boffer arrows from. just swing by your local home supply chain and grab the components. It shouldnt cost too much(like 20 bucks for 6 weapons) to get started and there are a lot of opportunity's for creativity. Just remember to make every weapon safe. Also experimenting with game modes is very fun. We have one very similar to TTT where everybody draws cards and RPs. Definitely worth doing and there are many tutorials online to get you started if you need help.

    • @lankyp7579
      @lankyp7579 Před 8 lety

      We use scout/junior bows. They are about 15lb draw and can usually be found in the sporting section of walmart or a similar store. pretty cheap around 20 bucks. I have made arrows before but for safety and time/resource saving i now buy all my arrows from Calimacil. The round tips work very well, dont hurt, and fly much much better than home made ones. they are a bit pricey over all though, around 12 bucks an arrow. Very worth it in my opinion. Hope this helped, feel free to message me with any other questions! :D

  • @7dayspking
    @7dayspking Před 8 lety

    Nice video, I'm not personally involved in larp/don't at this time have a great interest in it but did enjoy the video. I did cringe a tad when you discussed the realistic/historical aspect of it as a fan of this. For starters from a martial arts perspective...bringing the sword up to your head each and every time is not ideal...nor required. Remember that a sword is a sharp implement and not a club...swords don't really cut, at least not well by "bashing" the target..The blade naturally draws across the surface , the blade doesn't need to travel far in order to cut through something. The sword can begin just out in front of your right shoulder, go to the target and cut deeply into it (when I suggest target I mean heavier targets like wood (which you should avoid testing on.), meat or cloth.)
    I think perhaps you can apply this principle of *drawing the blade across* as a different way of reducing the impact of hits, with more emphasis on drawing the blade once it makes contact that momentum will carry forth into this secondary motion instead of into the target as long as enough emphasis is put on the draw itself. While a bit exaggerated it could be a nice way to retain edge alignment and reduce chances of injury where as with the wrist turn shown in the video you're somewhat losing control of your weapon.
    Another point is that a strike generally ends in a *Guard* ...a strike from the right shoulder down into next to the waist...allowing another strike from this position, this allows for a fluidity that isn't possible when bringing the blade back to your head or shoulder each and every strike.
    As for Dual wielding, it looked sort of like you were drawing from sword and buckler fencing...I think you might get something out of the "M.S 133" (sites like Wiktenauer have interpretations available to better explain what you're looking at.) You'll see some basic guards/stances, some striking and of course some binds.
    Again when you were explaining single sword and you gave an example of several guards (that actually remotely resemble historical guards.)...what is generally done is one strike leads to a different guard...rather than moving back to the same guard.
    When the two of you were "touching tips" (hahaha.) you could have actually moved into what is known as "the bind"...from here you could in fact strike while keeping the blades in contact with each other...those not familiar with the bind generally aren't prepared to defend against this sort of contact.
    The reason I made this comment is because both of you seem interested in the "fighting" aspect of it and are here discussing what you found efficient or practical...that's why it was so interesting to see just how close you guys got to historical fencing.
    Regardless, cool video.

    Some of the moves you do here are banned in my game (where you have the sword traveling behind your head to ready the next swing) because if someone is behind you you can hit them in the head.
    In my game the hands feet groin, head and knees are legal locations, although you are supposed to avoid hitting the groin area or head for safety reasons, if you do get hit there you still take the hit.

  • @shyzunk
    @shyzunk Před 8 lety +3

    I get that this is larp, but you did mention that it should still look realistic. And it should look that way where Im coming from, even though the rules are very different.
    While most of the content is more or less fine, the way you handle edge alignment and how you stop your attacks is just wrong and unnecessary. I hope that you are aware of the fact that you are hitting almost all the time with the flat, not the edge. Also, you are comletely taking the energy out of the blows making them utterly unrealistic when you at the end of an attack turn your wrist around. That causes the sword to hit not only with flat but also in a competely wrong angle. You can see the correct angle if you imagine that you are actually trying to cut with the edge. Intead of twisting your wrist and essentially turning the whole blade around to slow down the attack, you should just bend the wrist, keep it in the same angle but shorten the attack, while slicing back from the maximum extension. This helps reduce the hitting power without changing the attacks to completely unrealistic ones that would be hillariously ineffective in real life. but even if you just very lightly tap somebody on the shoulder, you are using the same technique that could bruise them if you wanted - therefore it is very realistic. And it doesnt slow you down in any way...

Very efficient. I do realize it's a safety issue, though, and that it could take a lot of fun out of the game. :(

    The "little tap" you do appears to be hyper extending your wrist and if someone had a heavier weapon could cause serious damage. For the duel wielding you should have the defence and attack in a single tempo or movement at the same time. The "fencers stance" is called a high ward properly. The proper term for you "high guard" is called a hanging perry which is invaluable in hema. All in all great video tho!

We got jobs, started doing things more adult like fishing and hunting horseback riding, raising and disturbing live bait to fisherman and area sporting goods stores. Some of us even make hunting and fishing knives. Yes we are even able to make swords and battle axes. But we don't waste of time and good steel.

      Shawn Darling wow horse back riding and getting the proper equipment to make weapons sounds expensive so does purchasing guns and bullets. I commend you and your for getting jobs at 11 years old but I feel you traded in your childhood in too soon. While I have personally never LARPed I can see why others would do so. Be it to feel accepted or to feel like they can be apart of something bigger, to be able to escape from this crushing world we live in and instead live in one they can help shape and create or just for fun, the reasons for LARPing can be as numerous as the people doing so. If LARPing doesnt interest you then how have you made your way to this video? Personally it was for juxtaposition of fighting techniques between LARPing combat (which has crazy limitations like no thrusts or headshots, rendering roughly 50% of kendo training worthless, over 50% fencing training worthless and about 20%-30% of some studies of HEMA worthless)

      Camdon Durfee Well my late grandfather had a sporting goods store now I own it now we decided to make sinkers and jig heads and distribute them to area sporting goods stores including the one that has been in the family for almost one hundred years. Now my thirteen year old son and his friends and girlfriend make the sinkers and jig heads plus they also raise and distribute live bait. They are doing pretty well for themselves. Their business is in one of the old barns at our home same one where my friends and at the time my girlfriend who is my wife did pretty much the same thing. My oldest son who is a vegan doesn't have any ambition to do anything. Living in the country sure has its perks. See after my grandparents retired from the store and passed it down to me my wife and I decided to buy their property because we had so much fun there and figured it would be a great place to raise our family. We got trails for horseback riding there is a old flooded rock query on our property so we can go swimming and have cookouts. A trout stream and a small river behind the house to go fishing and duck hunting.

      In the larp we play in you can't use your arrow for a melee attack for safety reasons also I wouldn't recommend it due to the arrow most likely snapping.
      Hammers are similar to swords in regards to blocking but you have a smaller contact area that actually does damage so you will need to be a bit more precise with you strikes but besides that go for it!! :D

    Bringing the sword back too far makes it unrealistic as well, video games make the mistake a lot where they bring the sword back as far as they can making a very exaggerated swing and a very long opening in your gaurd allowing for the opponent to hit you anywhere they want (course foam or latex weapons might be different as they are very different in weight and shape).

Why i say it is because it is saver. I did reenactment, we fight with iron and steel sword. The edge is harder but the point of your sword will not stick out then. Try it out, if you cut with the edge, the point aim high close or if you hit with the back edge the point will point downwards. You guys are telling good things we also did like not using strength and so but that one point. I would do it for more safety also you learn to us your wrist more.

    In our group we don´t count damage points.
    We just play the way it feels right and "die" or get "injured" when it seems right.
    This whole damage system destroys the real fun...in my opinion.
    + this rapidly swinging with the weapon wouldn´t generate damage in real life, so why would i count that silly wobblin hits as damage? ^^

    • @TheAussieLarper
      @TheAussieLarper  Před 8 lety

      The LARP we participate in is played in this way due to having a lot of players on field at once. We usually get about 400 people on field each week and this is the best way that the organisers have found to make the game safe. Sometimes when you are in a shield wall that crumbles then you get attacked by about 8 enemies it is hard to count your hits so it doesn't matter how you are hit. Some people go only to fight where as some like me go for the roleplay and will roleplay hits when in one on one combat, other than that i stick to the rules of the game i play and count my hits based on the hit zones and my HP.

    shouldn't a gambeson be two points? and leather be nothing, because historically leather armor would suck.

    • @TheAussieLarper
      @TheAussieLarper  Před 7 lety

      Historically leather was very useful and did not suck. Proper hardened leather is extremely strong and cannot be bent.

    • @naomitide5800
      @naomitide5800 Před 7 lety

      CutLarp Games that is actually not true. There are actually no historical accounts of leather armor. The main types of armor that would be considered "leather" would be gambeson (which was also supper efficient) also the use of dual welding is actually very inefficient. It would be far more efficient to use a dagger and sword rather than two swords. Two sword make things far more cumbersome. And as for your terms "realistic" it's far from that. You use many fighting techniques that leave yourself way to open. And as for the "rules of combat" for "safety" completly negate all realistic and historical and effective combat.

    Coming from a HEMA perspective, this video is less than fantastic. the footwork seems alright, but most of the rest of it could really use some genuine martial consideration. I get that with safety and all that, there are different considerations, but 2 things; 1) ever heard of helmets? that solves your head protection issue and 2) by extension there's no reason to not just improve protective gear on the banned target areas.

    • @bjfowler3106
      @bjfowler3106 Před 8 lety

      I agree, wouldn't just following more SCA like rules help a lot? I'm not saying adopt that completely because it comes with it's own host of problems, but if people honestly just wore some helmets I think it'd help a lot.

    • @PathfinderAngus627
      @PathfinderAngus627 Před 8 lety

      I've not actually done SCA, so I don't know the rules for it, but my point is just that some protective gear plus the soft weapons should really allow almost anything not designed to get around it.

    • @bjfowler3106
      @bjfowler3106 Před 8 lety

      Angus Freeman SCA requires, in general: a strong steel helm normally of 14 gauge steel, neck protection, knee protection, crotch protection, and hand protection. The exact requirements vary per Kingdom -A group area- though, all of these are usually required to be rigid. The only places that you cannot aim for in SCA is the knees and below and the hands. Not a perfect system but it's one way of handling it.
