- When Steven found a baby duckling stranded in the pool at this apartment complex, he found a new friend. He was unable to reunite Cheerio with his duck family, so Steven made sure he was safe. Now that Cheerio has returned to the wild, he still visits Steven every day, and even brings his wild duck friends with him.

Many years ago, when I was in my early 20s, I went backpacking to Europe for a few months and ended up staying in Germany for 1 year. I lived in this really old apartment with high ceilings and a musty smell. One day, I was laying down on the sofa watching TV and I noticed this small mouse coming out of the corner. He stared at me for a few seconds and looked curious but didn't seem too concerned about my presence. I didn't really do anything, I just looked at him and left him alone. As time went by, he kept showing up here and there until one day I decided to leave a piece of bread and some cheese in the middle of the living room. So, that same day he shows up again, while I'm watching TV, and decides to go and taste whatever I had left him. I didn´t move or do anything, so at the point, he probably knew that he was safe with me and that I was not going to harm him. From that day on, I gave him food every day and he would come out and hang out with me. We became friends and I named him Pepe. Eventually, I was able to feed him in his mouth and he would let me pet him. When it was time for me to get back home, I knew that if he would stay behind, the next tenant would probably kill him, so I decided to take him home with me, back to the US. I had to take him to the vet in Germany and he had to go through a quarantine process but he made it home to America and lived with me for another year and a few months until he passed away. Mice have a very short lifespan, they usually don't live more than 2 years, so he lived a long life, for being a mouse. Now, I'm in my 40s and I still think of him often and treasure the time we spent together. 😢
This is an awesome story, a lovely gift for both of you. Life would be unbearable without that kind of magic.

just took you advise about setting the things you love free... so i dropped off my puppies, kittens, baby and Smart TV in the forest. So far none came home.

I was homeless for around 6 months and I spent alot of time under the bridge downtown. I had no friends and was about to end it all. BUT I had ducks as my friends. They got comfortable with me they would walk over my legs as I fed them. It helped me get through 🙏

I've made pets of ducks, chickens, turkeys, swans, etc. and they are all loving and affectionate or can be if you look at them as companions. I love this video!! What a gift this guy has been given.

We had a wild Mallard duck befriend us and become a pet for a long time. It had to have been 2-3 years. He lived on our property, on the pond. One day he left and didn’t return. I just imagine he found a lady friend and had a family.💗

It's so fascinating how all these baby animals get found without mom or dad around so these people just take them in to parent the animal as there own. The people that do that are so sweet and kind.

Once any kind of bird imprints on you early in its life it's all over--you've got a buddy for a long time........all birds are very smart and they never forget.............

I can genuinely feel the manly happiness in this guy's voice. He sounds so proud of his *BIG* boy!
Glad ya rescued the babu duck and had every intention of making sure he was returned to the wild, that first flight he took and didn’t come home for a full day, that was a goal you accomplished and it must’ve felt good that you helped save a duck and let return to the wild.
BUT the duck chose to come back to you the next day and made the decision on his own to keep coming back to you despite having his freedom, even bringing his girlfriend and his friends to introduce you to them. Even flying over the area to see you. THAT is his own choice and your not forcing him, THAT is what I call special and I think others can agree with me on that to. :) so all and all, nicely done my friend, thanks to your deed, you were rewarded greatly with a very special relationship with a wildlife creature were some people would dream of having. :)

That cheerio duck is a cool guy. He's proud of his parent no matter what and shows him off to his friends without worrying that they might think he's a weird kid because his parent is totally "different"
@Tinyrocket the duck is not tame at all, he chose to come back to his rescuer after he took off that first time and didn’t come back after a full day, Cheerio made the decision to come back to the man but you don’t see the duck inside the guys house at all, you see a duck that has his freedom but chooses to come back. I’m sorry you don’t understand that but I can’t change your mind or make you understand. So all I can do is hope in time you come to understand that. 🙂

It's funny, sometimes I'll watch my kids viewing some video about fights or people failing and I tell them that whatever you put into your mind is what your mind becomes. Why choose to subject one's self to the worst examples of human behavior?
I too could watch these videos all day because I love how different species of animal seem to all be finding a common bandwidth for understanding.

this reminds me of my Wheet-Wheet. A freaked out baby duckling was abandoned near my house, we tried to find her family or other ducks, but after trying for days, she ended up imprinting & staying with me. Same story like this -
She was a trip! She was still as wild as she could be, only staying indoors at night, when we went to sleep. She was right with me, followed me everywhere - soo close that if I stopped walking, she would bang into the back of my foot. LOL
She stayed with me all summer, as I lived/ran condos right off the beach. She had a blast there, swimming & sunbathing, visiting with all of the guests, following me around while I cleaned rooms & did all my daily work. Everyone loved her. I called her Wheet-Wheet bc thats the little noise she made, Wheet Wheet Wheeting all day long, talking to me. Its funny, she LOVED Cheerios, that was her fave treat. When fall came, I took her over to my uncles house, bc he had families of ducks in his pond on his land. She LOVED IT! I stayed in a tent for the first 2 nights with her, to make sure she was ready. After that, she was golden. Now, she flies south every year and even comes back to the pond!! She brought her new family with her last year, I am very lucky to have bonded with such a beautiful, lovingly sweet, funny & smart creature. She really is my friend, forever.

I've been raising stray cats since a decade but I never imprison them. I feed them numerous times a day, give them love, cuddles, my blanket & most importantly freedom. Mostly they return but they love exploring the outside.

Young ducks imprint their person and that's that from then on. It's the neatest thing and honor for a wild animal to imprint on you and it's forever. So cool.
I admire you for respecting the fact that Cheerio is still of the wild and did not attempt to domesticate him. Even in ykur footage, you don’t smother him or show that you let him get used to human touch since it can harm him or make him accustomed to it ☺️

At this very moment I am about halfway through this exact video in my own life. I work in rescue, and a two-day-old injured duckling was brought to me, and she has been living with me for almost two months now. She's living on the farm, integrated with all the dogs, cats, reptiles, and everything else in my life. Never thought I would have such a special relationship with a duck. But I love my little Feather Locklear. 🦆

I think this is a perfect example of the kind of bond humans and animals were meant to have. We love them, they love us, and we live our own lives, but we're happy to spend time together regardless. I think anyone who says it's wrong to keep animals as pets, this video proves that even a wild animal can be very happy with a human. Just allow them to be themselves, and don't force them to change for your convenience. Kind of a good moral for any relationship, honestly.
If I were a duck I would hang with Steven, too. He is a sweetheart.

Its always extra special and attractive to me when a man goes the extra mile to help an animal survive and thrive. This is the kind of man I want my daughter to marry. Someone who is compassionate, kind and thoughtful. I always say. If your boyfriend or a guy youre interested in, is cruel to animals. RUN away!!! He will treat you and your children the same one day.

I rescued a baby male ducking who's parents were either killed or he was stranded i raised him and he flew away when he got old enough compeltly wild. I do miss him though and his name was maxwell x3

I love this. I’m just so paranoid about his safety being in the wild. I pray he is always protected and lives a wonderful, happy and healthy life! Ducks are amazing pets. Ours acted like guard dogs, and if anything ever got into our backyard, we knew about it ASAP! Also, they ate all the worms and grubs around the yard so we never had a mole problem. Lol.
