What are growing pains ? These are the most common cause of benign self-limiting pain in preteen or the schoolgoing age group. It has self-limiting course most often you can see your child complaining of pain in both the legs. Usually more at the night time. So these are caused by growing pains. Almost 10 to 20% of the schoolgoing child suffer from this. So how do you know whether it is a growing pain or not they present with diffuse pain in calves and this is more at night and usually after a vigorous play. So that says it is growing pain. Always it is bilateral. Very very rarely it can be unilateral. So what causes this growing pain there is no exact cause known for what causes growing pain it is attributed to vitamin D deficiency in recent studies it can also be because of the decreased bone strength or low threshold for pain in your child but the exact reason is not known. How do you know when to investigate the child. There is no need for any investigations in case of growing pains. But you do have to investigate if your child is having joint pain or joint swelling he is having any rashes or is having any fever the growing pains. Usually will not be persistent to the next morning if it is persistent to the next morning or if the child is having very severe pain which is causing him difficulty in walking. Then you you definitely have to consult your doctor because it can be many other pathological causes. How do you treat this it is a self-limiting course usually after 10 to 12 years. It'll resolve on its own. But when the child is having pain you can give a hot fermentation or massage. Analgesics are usually not advised but if it is very severe pain you can give paracetamol.
