- Video of Michael Evanko fly fishing an unnamed Pennsylvania wild trout stream located in Schuylkill County. This stream is referred to as a blue-line stream because it is note named on maps and it was unknown prior to fishing it whether or not it supported a population of wild trout. The stream runs through a thick rhododendron forest and access was very difficult. The water temperatures on this tributary held steady in the low 40s during the time of filming. There were no direct access trails to a majority of this stream and hiking in was necessary. The nymph pattern used in this video is called the Pink Ferrari and utilizes pink Lively Legz. This video was shot on Tuesday, January 2, 2019 and was solo filmed.
Great video...and I can vouch for rhodo being the toughest plants to navigate or to attempt to fish through. In the Smokies, the streams are tunnels through the rhododendron. One time I was fishing a stream that ran along a major road; you could hear the cars, but there was a solid wall of rhodo between the stream and the road. Lightning hit within 50ft of me, so I scrambled out of the stream, through the brush, to get back to the car - when I got out, I was missing the upper 2/3 of my rod. Another time, I had to bushwhack through a rhodo "hell" as they're called there to get back to a trail; within 5 minutes, I had lost my hat, my sunglasses, and finally my regular glasses. I was within 30ft of the trail, but I couldn't see it - just a wall of green and those buggy whip limbs.
Crazy that I'm finding this video today. I just fished this stream last weekend. I only know because I have a picture of that little waterfall coming down the side of the hill. I had heard the brown trout rumors as well, but all brookies for me as well. Those rhododendrons sure are fun arent they? Great video!
Just beautiful in the Rhododendron. I enjoy the scenery as much as your catches. Don't change a thing. Great format and inspiration. Show us Northern NJ. Thanks for all you do.
Henry Krzewinski thanks Henry, that means a lot, I’ll have to get over to Jersey!
Hey Brother, In one of your videos, you mentioned some kind of small, strike indicator you were using that you were touting, but I can't remember the name of it and would like to get some since I only live minutes from some blue-line, brookie water. Figure I'd return to my roots this winter in EC Central NY rather than schlepping all the way to Pulaski for Steelhead. Thanks a bunch.
Another great video, thanks. Could that be a crawfish scar on the 2nd fish? I've seen them in small streams in NC, not sure if you have any up north.
I'd considered that it could be a crawfish scar. I've seen those scars before.
The rumor is true. I found a small brown in this one today. Its funny how i randomly re-watched your video here and realized where you were. The stream changed a little since you uploaded this video
Mike -- Since you asked, I would be interested in seeing a movie with smallmouth downstream and wild trout upstream on any stream. I'm thinking of Kettle, EF (trout)/FF (bass), Driftwood Branch, or plenty of others. Whatever and whenever would be convenient for you.
Tex Killerson interesting idea, may have to wait for the spring on that one, but interesting.
Also, thank you for demonstrating proper handling of my magnificent wild trout. You are setting a good example. It's very important, and I'll bet it is doing some good!
Tex Killerson the kids imitate what they see so I’m trying to set a good example.
Mike, I may have caught that one at 5:15 before. Just kidding! Love you videos it's always fun to seek out hidden gems, the creeks and the fish that live in them. Thanks for taking us along! This state has some pleasant surprises for those willing to do the work to seek them out.
B Dickinson that’s funny, you had me for a second!
Beautiful stream, beautiful fish, what a wonderful way to start the new year. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome fish, Mike! Good to stumble upon a vibrant native brook trout habitat. Gotta love PA.
Great video Mike! Look forward to fishing with you!!👍💯🎣
Osny_fishing_adventures thanks Owen, you bet!
Another great video. I could watch all day long. Tight lines!
Where were you at in this video.....Little Schuylkill?
New Ringold area?
As always great video and location, thanks Mike.
Thank you, happy new year. Keep up the good work!
Great video and nice fish! Really like all of your native videos! Tight lines Mike
Very nice Mike! You motivated me to get my Mass fishing license and going to sample some of the blue line brook trout streams in Western Mass. I normally fish in New York and Vermont but no winter trout seasons. Thanks.
I've done all types of fishing except flyrodding and this has me wanting to build myself a flyrod and head into the mountains! Nicely filmed too! 🎣👍
Found your channel a couple of months ago when I started getting into fly fishing. Love all the videos. Hope you can make it back to my home state of WV sometime to do some trout fishing. Great content!
Another great video Mike. If you want to try something different, try the North Branch Patapsco river in Carroll County Maryland. Used to have a great population of Brookies 50 years ago, but DNR started stocking Liberty reservoir with brows an rainbows. Now the browns spawning in the North Branch in the fall have eaten most of the Brookies. November 30 of 2013 I caught a 26 inch Brown there I estimate weighed 7 pounds. Nobody fishes it hardly at all. Very technical fishing.
Charles Gaither I’ll check it out Chuck, sounds interesting, any tips on where to access?
@@WoolyBugged Lee's Mill rd upstream or down stream. Undercut banks, lots of riffles and pocket water. Streamers and stoneflies as well as small nymphs all on the menu. Midges another good choice
Anything in Beaver run, Deep run, Broad run, Aspen run or Roaring run?
Just a little update on the North Branch Patapsco. Take route 140 thru Westminster east to New Carrollton rd. Follow New Carrollton rd to Patapsco rd. Keep right to the river right below where the east branch of the North Branch Patapsco joins with the main river. East branch was the last place I caught Brookies. Browns there too. Didn't want to give too much info during prime season. Hope u get this . I'm in the phone book in Crisfield Md. Call me on the land line any time. My wife will give u my cell. Good luck and great fishin
Awesome video as ever Mike. Thanks 🎣👍
This one got to me . got my license on 31st and still haven't been out....Awesome video man!!!
I just discovered this stream this summer. Fished it about 3x. Very tight and technical as you go up.
Great video! 👍Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for a great video Mike! Would you consider doing a video where you run through all the rods/reels/setups you use and what type of streams/rivers/fish they are best for?
What does blue line mean? I enjoyed your video.
lisa murphy it refers to a stream that is not named on a map but holds a population of wild trout. Essentially it’s just a blue line on a map.
Thank you. I hope to fish Pennsylvania some day soon.
Your the Brookie Man..
Great start of 2019..
Keep up the Great Work Mike...
Where in Schuylkill county is this?
Another great video. Well done!
What a beautiful brookie stream. What made the question cool is the fact that they may never have been caught.
Great fishing, i really miss seeing PA but I haven’t been back to philly since 1994.
Def would agree to the theory of Wild Browns being lower. I've noticed that fishing Devils Hole Creek. The second you get past the ruins it goes from Brown to Brook!
Nice video. Keep up the good work
Nice video Mike. Makes me miss my Pa brookie streams. But, we do have some here in Montana and lots of cut throat streams. Look for the browns further down. Hopefully there is a natural barrier to prevent the browns from getting up high. Do you ever get to Montana? If so, let me know. I'll take you on a float on the Yellowstone.
Could be that scarred-up Brookie got cross-wise with a brown trout. I’ve seen 18” browns go after 12” cutthroat in water not much bigger than in the video. I really miss the Laurel forests in PA and WNY. Thanks for the very entertaining video.
Loved the video. I haven’t caught a brookie yet, just browns and bo’s. I need to blue line and check out some smaller streams.
Great video Mike. That's what bluelining is all about. That stream looked very healthy. By chance, you get a pH reading or water temp? Brookies looked healthy and very colorful.
BrookieBum the water temp was around 42 degrees, did not get a PH reading.
@@WoolyBugged awesome. That stream reminds me of one of my favorite streams here in WV.
Thank you for this. Reminded me of fishing tiny streams in Wales with my Grandad when I was a little kid. Really nice video catch very pretty, healthy fish. Looking forward to working my way thought the other videos on your channel. Subscribing was an easy decision :-)
Awesome video! Always wanted to try blue lining somewhere. One question though, why do these wild brook trout take such a bright and unnatural Lively Legz presentations? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Don't they usually take super specific natural presentations?
Either the rumour of wild browns is false or they are in the lower portion of the stream.
Inspired me to go out chasing natives. Went out to oil creek this weekend and caught a few on a blue line
Great stuff!
Very pretty Creek. I've met fisherman who don't know the difference between brook trout & Brown trout, maybe that's how the rumor got started.
Love the videos... Keep them coming! If you ever want to fish The Gunpowder in Maryland sometime with a subscriber, let me know. It would be a pleasure to fish with you. Tightlines, Mike
What those brook trout lack in size make up for it in style and colors. Nice looking country...great vid.
Such a beautiful little stream.. And there's nothing better than native brookies
Ralph Barton I agree Ralph!
Love your videos, have you ever fished clarks creek in dauphin county
Hey Wooly I noticed you were wearing wading boots that were rubber with metal studs. How do they compare to felt soles boots on slick rocks?
Hillbilly Sportsman studs or spikes hold up well against slime and slickness. I have a pair of korkers that have studs. They give you pretty good traction in and out of the water. Although I will say that not even studs or spikes can prevent falls 100% of the time
That is my all time favorite brook trout stream i fish it every week. Only ever caught 1 brown trout on it. I have several vidoed on fishing that stream. Great brook trout population on it.
Pennsylvania wilderness lucky guy!
I only ever caught brooks were u fished if you fish below the road you drove in on u will catch browns down to the mouth
Pennsylvania wilderness that’s makes sense.
What depth is your indicator set at? Pretty brook thanks enjoy.
Robert Knapp I always follow the rule of 1.5 times the depth of the water.
@@WoolyBugged what was the water depth?
Robert Knapp as with any stream the depth changes in every section. So I use the 1.5 times the depth of water rule and move the indicator as I move on the water.
Thanks keep up the good work just learning. Been a comercial ocean fisherman for 40 yrs have a hunting cabin in Bradford county gonna try brook fishing there good day.
Robert Knapp sure thing Robert. I’m happy to answer any questions you have as you start.
Amazing fishing love brookies just wondering if you can give me a shout out love the video bud
EDB Outdoors shout out to EDB!
What is blue lining?
I'm not positive, but I think it means fishing unnamed streams that just show up as blue lines without names on maps
On a video
