Hiking Above Waterfalls, Fishing Isolated Trout - Wooly Bugged

- In this video I hike miles into a remote part of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania in search of wild trout. I find hidden waterfalls and an isolated population of fish above the falls. I walk a couple of miles of a freestone tributary and use a fiberglass fly rod and various dry fly patterns. The views are stunning, with large rock outcroppings, crystal clear water, and a green forest canopy. During the video I fly fish with several dry fly patterns, including variations of the Yellow Sally and Gray Wulff.
99% of my videos are self-filmed. 99% of my videos are on water I've never fished. All streams are accessed on foot.
To learn more about the fly rod used in this video, please visit:

In the video I refer to the rod I’m using as a 7’-5wt. I meant to say 7’-5 inch. This is a 4wt glass rod.
That "poor " brookie at about 22:25 not only got his lip stuck, but also lost his salamander lunch, so net loss of calories for the day- there's a lesson there for us all somewhere (Grin)-- One of your best Mike, for scenery and quality of wild trout caught- thanks!!
Thank you Jeff! I'm sure he found more lunch down in that hole!
Mike, my favorite episode so far! Awesome scenery, great brookies!! They have some serious size to them. Thanks for bringing us along on that adventure!
You bet, thank you as always!
Beautiful stream with awesome pools. Nothing better than trout on dries
You got that right!
44 seconds in and I already want to give you 5 thumbs up!
@@JP-dz7zu the falls are what I appreciated and his content never fails. What an awesome episode!
Thanks Paul, always appreciate your positivity and support! Thanks buddy.
Wow, Ive said it before, but man your brook trout series have always been a special treat. This one is really really something special though. What an amazing area and some amazing fish!! My favorite type of fishing by far has always been the small mountain stream chasing wilds and natives and you've really captured what makes it magical. Amazing!
Appreciate that. I try, but nothing can perfectly capture the real thing!
Great to see you out and about again Mike👍don’t get out much myself so I love tagging along and watching over your shoulder.
I’m glad you can tag along!
Awesome video the scenery is spectacular and the brook trout just can't top them. We are blessed in PA to have this type of environment to fish. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautiful scenery and water, the fishing looks excellent! Those fish are really beautiful, that mountain stream is a true paradise!
Thanks Jerome!
Mike, thanks for sharing this. Beautiful scenery and beautiful brookies! What a combination.
Glad you enjoyed it
What wonderful scenery. You are very graceful and in every approach and handle these beautiful fish with great care. Beautiful video. Thank you kindly for sharing.
Thank you sir. I try to treat the stream and the fish with the respect deserved.
Purely Epic day! The goldish hue on those Brookies was incredible!
Thank you for watching J.D.
Man this video had it all. Great fish and great scenery. You sure had to work for it!. It's comforting that streams like this exist. Thank you so much for sharing. The world is a better place with Wolly Bugged videos.
Thank you Mike, good to hear from you again. I appreciate you comment as always. Hope you’ve had great fishing this spring. Glad Covid is ending!
Beautiful stream and great brookies….. the best!!
Thanks for the visit
Glad you're back. Beautiful wild brookies in pristine setting.
this looks extremely fun
Ridiculously beautiful. What a treat. Amazing how varied the markings are on the fish.
Some truly beautiful fish.
Thanks for the reply Mike.Keep up the great work.So many think it is the size of a fish that is important.Catching stream bred trout is more fun.
Wow that last hole was great! Nice scenery too
Thanks Ian.
Mike, there is just something about the way you film your videos. It really captures what I love about this kind of fishing. Always inspiring me to keep exploring. This place is a real gem. Hope to find one like it in my neck of the woods. Thanks as always.
Thank you Riff, I appreciate your comment.
Love the backwoods, small stream fly fishing. Excellent video combining wild trout & endurance hiking in waders.
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m not gonna’ lie. At first I was like, “Is dude just gonna’ walk for the whole entire video?” Then after four minutes of some of the most beautiful terrain and well shot video that I’ve seen in some time - I watched that initial four minutes two more times. Job well done. Now I’m gonna’ go watch the “fishin’ part” of the video!!!
Haha, thanks man!
I didn’t think that 3rd fish and take would be beaten but wow that last pool!
Superb episode as always Mike 👍🏻
Thank you sir!
That 3rd fish was a favorite
I did something real similar to your video yesterday in the mountains of East Tn. The waterfall I hike to looked a whole lot like the one in your video. I Love doing this type of fishing. Thanks for the video!
Thank you Hillbilly!
Stunning. Thank you for sharing this with us. Natural beauty still exists. We haven’t ruined everything yet. Thank god.
Thanks Stephen, there are still a lot of wild places out there.
Wow Mike! First of all... So good to see you back out there doing your thing man! You were missed for sure! And my god... what an incredible stream and fish in pretty much every way. That is a dream stream for sure!
Thank you, feels good to be out running around again exploring. Definitely one of the most beautiful streams I’ve fished here in PA.
Incredible video Mike! This type of fishing reminds me of masu salmon/whitespotted char fishing in Japan
I would like to come to Japan to do that.
Another great video Mike! Unbelievable scenery.... Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you for watching Rich.
Great video: beautiful PA scenery, nice wild brookies and fiberglass fly rod. It does not get much better than that! Great job, Mike.
Thank you Dan, I appreciate you watching.
Fantastic Footage!
Thanks Cole!
That's awesome! Its so pretty!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey man i just found ur channel. U are in an absolutely Gorgeous part of the country. That lill mountain stream looks so amazing. What a great place to enjoy gods creations and spend the day by urself. I hit the sub after watching this video and really hope to see more of ur videos bud.
Thank you John, I appreciate you watching and subscribing. We are blessed with some beautiful natural areas here in Pennsylvania.
Great video !! Those should be called "diamond brookies". They sparkle with so many colors. Amazing !! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Just found your channel and have been watching constantly. Great quality and you actually let the people know what your using. Thank you and keep it up!
Thanks for watching Mitchel 😊
Beautiful place! Such cute fish too.
Thank you!
Beautiful work brother!
Thank you Tyler. The net looks good!
Very nice and I'm glad you don't add any music to your videos, the stream itself is great background sound.
Thanks Keith!
I was going to make the exact same comment!!! The lack of narration is also a perfect touch. Thanks for this beautiful film, Mike!
Some of the best fly fishing content there is. Thanks for this.
Thank you Vick.
What a fantastic video, beautiful trout and scenery. Well done awesome job. Keep them coming. 😊
Thanks Darrel, hope you're well!
@@WoolyBugged all well thank you. Just cold here in South Africa (Johannesburg) at the moment but that’s really good for our trout fishing. 😁
Great videography and fishing footage. You caught some spectacular brook trout! For it being an isolated population as you describe I am surprised you didn't take any photos for the Penn St study you promoted. I can't imagine how tiring it is walking up and down those steep sidehills 2x in order to capture the footage of you walking.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank's Mike, i had to take my pump to finish the video, Ouf! what a ride.
Thanks for coming along!
Really enjoy watching you fish , especially the streams in Sullivan County.
Thanks Robert!
My money’s on a salamander in that one trout. Used them for brook trout bait many times. Nice video!
It did look like one.
new to your channel i am not subscribed to any channel but I will be yours after watching this and several others. You do it just right man seriously! From Delaware but have a brother in perry county and fish there alot. Enjoyed urs videos here enjoyed the challenge of finding out exactly where you were lol and really just enjoy your vids period. I have old videos to check out and look forward to new ones awesome stuff truly.
Daniel thanks for the comment and the subscription. Glad you get up to Perry County to do some fishing. Hope you have a great autumn!
awesome video
Another fantastic video! Beautiful brookies and scenery. Thanks for sharing. That looks like a special place. Would like to know more about the John Clark Special pattern though.
What would you like to know James?
what a beauty.
Mike, New to your channel and it is awesome!
Great footage and explanation of fly patterns.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Curt, I appreciate your comment and subscription!
Another fabulous video. Please keep posting!!
Thank you Andy!
Maybe my favorite WB video yet. Awesome camera work, and some beautiful fish. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks William!
13 and 57 are gems
Mike, outstanding video & what a stream! It doesn't get much better than hiking through beautiful scenery and finding wild fish. Your channel is rapidly becoming my favourite fly fishing content on CZcams. I may have to visit PA in the future. Brook trout can be tough to find in western WI and the MN driftless. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the Penn State brook trout study update too.
Thanks Ben, I appreciate it!
Great video Mike! Truely amazing environment. Great footage. Thank you for sharing
Thank you Mark, appreciate it.
Nice brook trout fishing, my favorite hike-n-catch type.
Sally the black lab fishes beside me like a magnet, watching every cast and excited every catch.
I do wear a longer brim and side of head cover, as the brightness of, is the highest point as well.
Hope you return to the monster trout hole, crouch in from a long way and score the mac daddy.
I need a pup as a fishing partner. How much training did it take to keep your fishing partner at your hip?
@@WoolyBugged Zero, she took to it like an osprey does. We did train her hand signals for directional control as well as all the rest. Lucky to have her, massive vocabulary, endless mature enthusiasm, and intuitive brain. Mind you she is a black lab so water = fun, and food = anything. She is classic lab, not block head. Hope you find one. Keep pup off of grain food.
I am going in two weeks... I will NOT say fishing out loud !!
Awesome video as always. Quite a cool stream too!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job as always Mike.Your video work is outstanding.I know it takes lots of extra work to take shots like you do.It makes you videos so much more interesting. You truly take us along on your adventure. Thanks for all the great scenery shots of our great Pa trout streams. What a beautiful area for sure.I was wondering if your chest pack and back pack were a combo unit. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Thanks Ron, it is a lot of work. I guess it’s good I enjoy it. That Fishpond pack is called Bitch Creek. I’m not sure if they are making it after this year, but yes, I bought it as a unit. I’m considering the new Simms flyweight pack but want to see it in person first. Hoping Fishpond comes out with another hiking pack for this year or next.
Seriously lovely film. This is my kind of stream!! I fish tenkara mostly and would love to cast some dries to these little guys on a super flexy rod. I looked up that rod you were using too, what a cool custom piece. Subscribed, definitely wanna see more videos like this. Very cool man!
Thank you Flicky, I appreciate that. You've got a new subscriber too.
wow ! incredible colors ..and what a setting! I got to ask, when you got to the 2nd water fall... was wondering why you did not try to fish that hole ?... Thanks for taking us along in some incredible country...
Ya know Jimbo, I should have. I was set on getting up above those falls to see what was up there. I’ll have to go back!
@@WoolyBugged ..lol..yep and I'm sure that would not take a lot of convincing.. to go back lol.. what a place and what colors with those wild brookies... way to get after it!! You hit it out of the park with this one ..
Mike, after watching this video two times, I decided I had to get back up there again. Went up on 7/30 and had an outstanding day in the wilds, catching some of the most beautiful natives I've seen. Probably one of my very best days of native fishing, top water no less! My best was a gorgeous 10".
I was curious if you went up to the road from that last little falls pool you caught the nice one from? I'm considering fishing the next mile up. Talk about a pristine stream!
Wow, what a stream, and what quality fish. That definitely looked like a salamander to me, which tells one just how big that trout was. I don't know how the trout react to them, but bass absolutely hate them, because they like raiding their nests for the eggs and/or fry. You can drag all sorts of lures through a bed, and the bass will either ignore it or bump it out of the way - put on a plastic "spring lizard", and they'll destroy it. Same thing goes down here in saltwater with speckled trout - they hate baby croakers, because they go after the eggs floating in on the incoming tide.
That’s interesting information Ian. Might need to tie up a lizard streamer.
@@WoolyBugged I bet that would work in the Smokies, particularly in the larger streams for big brown trout; the Smokies have more known species of salamanders than anywhere else in the world, with some found no where else.
I like your channel and videos a lot.
My Buddy lives in Sullivan county and is just getting into fly fishing.
He lives close to du shore and Lopez
Is your last video close to that area?
It’s my favorite type of fishing !!
I don’t care about big fish.
Just steady and stealthy beautiful waters and areas!!
Thank you KB. I love Sullivan County, a truly beautiful part of Pennsylvania. Get out there and explore!
@@WoolyBugged
It beautiful
And fortunately it’s not that far for me.
About 4 hrs
When I finally retire my wife and I will spend more time up there.
She finally expressed an interest to learn and Brookies
Are the best to learn.
Tight lines to ya!!
KB
Great video and some nice natives! I fished that stream back in 2009. I took pics of the falls and compared mine with your video. Same spot. Water falls that big make you remember. I didn't fish above the two falls though, because of low stream levels at the time and didn't think it was worth the major hike up! Maybe I'll make the hike after the next good rain.
Didn't you come in from the bottom at the parking area?
Yep, from the bottom parking area. Thanks for watching!
Some great brook trout fishing in Pike Co. PA. I’m hoping to get out this weekend. I’m not sure which creek you fished but If it’s the one I thinking there’s a delayed harvest section?
Great Video Mike What a stream. How is the Penn State fish study going/
Hoping to do an up for everyone before early autumn. The response has been incredible and Sarah is beginning to work through the process of analyzing the data. Stay tuned.
Hi - great video that makes me anxiously awaiting the spring! what is the brand/model net you are using? Native brookies go throught the holes in my rubber net. Thanks
Ed, that's a net I had custom made by 142 Supply Co.
Is it considered dry fly fishing because you're not going in the water? Or is it something to do with the lures?
Great stream!!!! Beautiful water and elevation changes. I didn’t see you using the PSU card? Just curious.. I’m going hunting tomorrow morning!!!
Thanks Scott. I've already used the card in that watershed and didn't have it with me on that day. Hope you caught a bunch of brookies!
Personally.... Seeing a nice little fire going with some fresh trout to keep you going would be nice. Not sure how many where legal.
Ed, I put them back, but in many PA streams you can legally keep fish.
Did you really finish that climb around falls #2? Just wondering, as I didn’t have the guts too.
Yes sir, wouldn’t do it again.
Love the videos. One question though: I could douse myself in Permethrin, and I would still pick up a thousand ticks if I walked through the areas you do. Don't the ticks bother you??
That's the primary reason I wear waders on these long hikes is because of the ticks. Here in Pennsylvania the outbreak of Lyme disease has been unbelievable over the past decades. Google the numbers. The waders do a great job a keeping the ticks off me. In 3-4 years of doing these types of hikes, I've only had one tick on clothes after taking the waders off.
@@WoolyBugged I know - I live in PA and fish all the brookie streams in NC (Sinnemahoning, Kettle tribs)
Nice video; however, not sure how you can make it in waders past the last week of may..
Two things. One, I wear waders because of ticks. Lyme disease numbers are at astronomical levels in Pennsylvania. Two, that's why I love the new Simms Flyweight waders. They are durable, breathable, and provide that barrier I'm looking for from the ticks. Many guys don't care, that's just a risk they take.
Is the trout's body delicate?
great video. i asked a video or two ago regarding what pair of waders i should get for small stream fishing at an affordable price, any recommendations
What’s your price range and I can make a recommendation for ya.
@@WoolyBugged relatively cheap 100-200 dollars. i already have boots but if there is a really good deal on a more expensive pair that you know of i would look at that as well
Catching minnows?
No, they are called brook trout. A trophy here in Pennsylvania would be 10-12" in length. Many don't exceed 7"-8". I like catching big fish too.
@@WoolyBugged Definitely Brook trout minnows. Where I fish in Canada the Brookies average 4-7 lbs. Absolutely beautiful fish.
