    Visioracer, the v20 cat engine you mention will drive the wheels directly through a transmission on most caterpillar equipment. Plus it does make some sense as your reduction ratios can be absolutely insane. You can drive a planetary reduction to drive a planetary reduction, plus with extra reduction in the gears in the trans, and the diff itself has a massive reduction, its not unusual to see a 55-78:1 final drive ratio through all of that reduction. Takes 78x the rpm but the final drive emits 78x the torque. Cat can run any engine on those units right down to a 14L engine with enough reduction

    Grew up in Wisconsin in the 90s, the railroad in town had over 100 of the V20-645s for power. Was an awesome sound to hear when three or four engines throttled up together, the bass throb of the engines going in and out of sync was a bit of a trademark of the SD45, F45, and FP45........

    That monster 2-stroke Detroit sure makes a sound I could get used to. What a machine.
    And that's the thing, piston engines produce types of frequences of sound that mimic music. And I think that's why we get the sense a machine is alive when it's running and doing its thing. I love engines.

    • @ericwebster4352
      @ericwebster4352 Před 5 lety +2

      He is mistaken, it is absolutely not a petrol burning engine. when they refer to it burning gas, they're talking about natural gas, such as methane or propane. It uses injected liquefied gas in place of diesel fuel. the only difference between the 34 series and 32 series is that it has the option to be run on natural gas, not petrol, it is still a compression-ignition engine that is designed to primarily be run on diesel. it does not contain spark plugs and nor would any manufacturer make a large engine that is not compression-ignition, they are simply not efficient enough. so, I hate to burst your bubble, but this video should give you no greater satisfaction than watching a compressed natural gas fueled Cummins powered airport shuttle bus. it is common to fuel diesel engines using natural gas rather than diesel. www.wartsila.com/products/marine-oil-gas/engines-generating-sets/dual-fuel-engines/wartsila-34df

      @@ericwebster4352 sorry. Just found your comment now. Lol. And yeah, I realize it's not a petrol burning engine. Making a petrol engine that large would be highly impractical and inefficient. It burns either cng or lng, not certain for sure though. Either way it was satisfying to hear that engine run. I've been rummaging through the internet just to find a video of that specific engine. I still think emd two strokes sound better though. Lmao 😂

    You can add Cooper Bessemer to the list of V20 manufacturers. They made a V20 4 cycle with 15.5 bore x 20" stroke primarily used for power generation. It could be a straight diesel, a gas diesel or straight natural gas engine and ran at 400 rpm. They also made V20 2 cycle engines for natural gas compression. They are no longer in business.

    • @TheSilverShadow17
      @TheSilverShadow17 Před 9 měsíci

      It's main issue was crankshaft failure despite having an incredibly smooth idle and operation, which makes the 20-645 quite rare amongst the 29,000 645 series engines that were built from 1965-1983. EMD made a V20 version of the 710 a few years after the 710 series was introduced and surprisingly we don't hear about crankshaft failure on the 20 cylinder 710.

    ...2 cycle Detroit and EMD engines use roots blowers for exhaust scavenging...
    ...only turbocharged models are actually using forced induction...
    ...early models were turbocharged through the roots blower...
    ...EMD then developed their turbocharger that is gear driven for scavenging and supercharging at lower rpms and loads...
    ...once there is sufficient flow through the turbine an over running clutch disengages and it functions as a true turbocharger...

    The EMD 710 is a stroked 645. All EMD's are based on the same basic design going back to the 1930's. The 567 had a bore and stroke of 8.5" x 10'. The 645 was 9.06 x 10. The 710 was 9.06 x 11.

      Old comment, I know.
      It's a 726 litre producing running at 750RPM making about 10MW. Jenbacher are pulling 10.4MW out of their 528 litre, 1000RPM V20 gas combustion engine which matches efficiency or may lag by a mere 0.2% (electrical) however their big thing is cogeneration which harnesses the thermal energy so their CHP efficiency is about 94%
      Classic example rotational speed vs displacement to make power

    1D49 has 26/26 cm of bore and stroke, 6000 hp @ 1100 RPM, 4 stroke diesel

    Correction on the EMD, it only ever used 2 roots blowers, OR one Hybrid turbocharger that has a gear drive and overrunning clutch and suns like a centrifugal supercharger at low rpm to provide scavenging air pressure

    • @SOU6900
      @SOU6900 Před 5 lety

      Unless you look at the 6 and 8 cylinder ones, or at least the 567 series variants. Those just have one blower. Plus they have different blower drive speeds depending on the engines. V6 and V12 models use one speed while V8 and V16 versions use a different blower speed.

    • @jth1699
      @jth1699 Před 5 lety

      True - the centrifugal supercharger on the 645 E4B etc had a 21 to 1 speed increase on the turbine - the engine would stay on the blower until it got about 1800 kw on it - then the engine would produce enough exhaust to make the turbo work efficiently... the 20 cylinders had problems in the locomotives due to the locomotive flexing and causing the cranks to wipe the main bearings - however there are lots of 20 cylinder emd`s powering generators pumps and other stationary applications... It is my understanding that EMD was the only engine that was allowed by the nuclear regulatory agency as emergency backup power in a nuke plant - I used to maintain several that were required to be up and online with 100% load in 10 seconds or less - and they could do it too...

    And a Cat truck shifts itself. You put it in the last gear position or the one you need to run in and the engine will accelerate and decelerate when it grabs a gear. You just leave your foot on the floor and the computer does the work, up and down.
