  • Before Washington D.C. was arranged to become the capital of the US, many locations were held as the seat of America's new independent government in the late 18th century. The de facto seat of America's governing body was debated for much time, and many potential locations which one wouldn't think were worthy of selection were legitimately up for debate. As we kick off our 6th and final tour of the year through the greater Appalachia region, we debut in the south-central area of Pennsylvania. Familiar locations we've covered like Harrisburg and Lancaster are just a short drive away from here along the banks of the Susquehanna River, where the US senate almost granted this small little place of Columbia, PA the title of America's capital city. Known as well for its history of commercial transportation via railroads and river canals, its geographic location allowed the town to function and prosper through the earlier years of the United States. It's a shame that Columbia never grew to its potential, not being able to adjust to the drastic economic changes of the 20th century. Nevertheless there is plenty for us on the Coverage Project to enjoy here! If you're ready for a month-long endeavor through the Appalachian Mountains, get excited.

Turkey hill in lancaster County is your generalized convenience store. Like sheetz or wawa. Columbia has tons of history! Grew up there for my whole life.

Columbia library is the one in Lancaster County to go to, for Lancaster county and local history reference/research texts.

I say it often that it’s amazing just how many stories of sentimental attachment and community history are attributed to these small places. At the same time, I totally see the draw to Florida as I discovered for myself recently haha. Great to hear!
