- Back Row POV on Flying Turns at Knoebels. Flying Turns is a type of roller coaster that was first introduced in the 1920s. It is characterized by a bobsled-like car that runs on a track with no rails, and is instead guided by a series of banked turns and twists. The ride took many years to perfect and open.
Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania is home to a popular Flying Turns roller coaster, which was designed to replicate the original ride from the 1920s. The coaster consists of two-person carts that slide and spin as they move along the track, providing riders with a thrilling and unique experience. The ride is known for its smooth and fast-paced movements, as well as its nostalgic design that harkens back to the early days of amusement park rides.

I love this ride, but fair warning to those watching the video, the action of the trains is dependent on the weight of the riders, so your experiences may be different than what you see in the video. but yes, like the guy says, this ride is awesome!
So a bunch of fatties like myself on it would make the ride slower ? 😂. It looks sooo 😎
This ride would be different every time. Worth going on multiple times I would think.
Not to mention they assign seating so you don't know what seat you'll be in.
Me too not so scary but fun and friendly too
Is it just me, or should that guy definitely have his arms inside of the car?
👍Are you grateful that Knoebels has given us a chance to experience this classic ride which debuted almost 95 years ago? I think it's a totally different experience from today's newer bobsled rides..
The ride looks awesome
yes i am
@@Acooo. The STEEL one at Europa opened in 1984 (Mack Rides) The very first WOODEN bobsled coaster built was in 1929 (almost 95 years ago) and Knoebels opened in 2013. 72 years after the very last wooden bobsled coaster was built in 1941 at Coney Island & it closed in 1974. 3:01 knoebels rules 95 year of 🦴vintage fun good old mémoire immortally vintage
Knoebels is such an amazing amusement park. It is smaller than most but you can get tremendous value out of each visit. Amazing food, friendly people, and great rides all for a fraction of the price compared to most parks.
Flying Turns reminds me of the old Bobsled ride that was at Coney Island back in the 60's. That was the first roller coaster type ride that I went on. And at Kings Dominion I also went on the Avalanche Bobsled Roller Coaster. Thanks for taking us along on the ride. 👍👍👍👍.
I was just going to say I got the chance to ride a bobsled at the Salt Lake City Olympic Park years ago, and this very much reminds me of that experience.
What a unique design. I'd love to see the engineering process behind it. Getting the train to safely derail, roll along some turns at speed, and back on the tracks is an impressive feat.
As a PA native, it makes me proud that Knoebels is still around...I haven't been there in half a century...
@@jeff7764So why did you leave it?
I was there last in the late 70's
Knoebels has undergone massive expansions and many changes throughout those years.
@@randomtraveler9854 when I was last there most of their rides were boardwalk leftovers rusty as all heck. Across the street was a dirt parking lot/campgroundish...
@philspd473 That's not the case anymore. I didn't see any rust and they spend years restoring the used rides they buy. However the parking lot is an open field.
My first roller coaster was Flying Turns at Euclid Beach in Cleveland Ohio. I was about 5 years old. Addicted to coasters ever since!
Absolutely loved the ride at Euclid beach. My father used to work on that ride as a teen! It looked much different than this one.
I'm pretty sure Mr. Knoebel himself rode that same ride when he was young, and that it inspired this ride.
“Jamaica we have a bobsled team”🎶🎵🎵😂😂😂
Cool Runnings! That was sucha nostalgia movie for me!
Love Flying Turns. I feel privileged to live close enough to visit Knoebels
Rode the Flying Turns at Riverview in Chicago in the Summer of 1967. In September of that year they announced it would close forever (open since 1904!) at the end of the season shortly thereafter. I was a big fan of watching bobsledding on TV so the Flying Turns looked a thrill ride I could handle 😀
I remember it well. My dad would take my brothers and me and we would ride everything. I think the only thing I didn't ride was the parachute drop.
@@jimp6542 You could not have paid me enough to go on the parachute drop! lol! I did do the Comet coaster. Once! Also no interest in The Rotor, where you were placed in a giant washing machine thing and it spun so fast you were plastered against the wall. Then they dropped the floor out from under you. No Thanks!! 😆
Who ever the creator was for this ride that person is a genus It goes to show you that you dont need crazy fast to have fun very cool
A short ride but one that could have so many variables from ride to ride. Looks like fun.
I loved being able to see the cars in front. A great perspective.
I’ve never seen anything like this before… it’s short but what a different feeling!
One of the best rides! My late father in law worked at Knoebels and that was our highlight each year visiting was to ride the phoenix and flying turns with the kids.
Knoebles is the most unique park in the US. It's free to go in and free to park and they have an area where you can camp. They have an rv area but also a place you can tent camp with full facilities for those campers. You can also rent cabins there. If parents are sick of the park there is an 18 hole golf course which is quite difficult. Lowest I ever shot there was 82 and I have a pretty low handicap. Also has the largest pool I've ever seen, it's like an acre big with all kinds of slides. Park also has a creek running right through it, you can fish inside the park but there are 100s of creeks and lakes for quality fishing for the sportsman. Plus they have kick ass rides. The wooden roller-coaster The Phoenix is voted in the top 10 wooden roller-coasters in the world every single year.
They focus on vintage rides instead of modern thrill machines. Knoebels is basically what most parks were like in the 50's. A lot of their rides were once a common attraction but today are almost nonexistent.
Thank you so much for this very informative share! I love in CT and have never heard of this park and at 60 would love to visit! These are the types of parks that are quickly disappearing and being replaced by corporate greed "dull" theme parks. Ppl don't realize what they're missing until they visit one.
@@randomtraveler9854Sounds like my type of park! The only other time you can experience vintage type thrill rides is at Carnival midways.
Knoebels regularly wins Golden Tickrt Awards for various things, including food and wooden coastees (Phoenix is #1 now). When Golden Ticket Awards had a carousel category, Knoebels won every year for their Grand Carousel. They have rides ranging from VERY gentle to quite intense as well as features like museums if you prefer such things. My friend and I are blessed to be able to visit twice a year. Hope to see you there this year! ^.^
I hope someday to be able to go to Knoebels. It just looks like such a different experience from so many other parks. Amazing the work that goes into keeping it alive and fun
I hope you are able to as well. It is a wonderful park and a very unique experience. There are some rides that you can't experience anywhere else, the atmosphere is wonderful and most of the workers are great. The food is amazing and fairly priced for an amusement park. Good luck getting to see it some day!
Famous last words: “I can’t believe I’m on this!”
We went on this at Riverview Park way back in 1966. It felt dangerous and looking at this I can see why, though it was a complete blast. I wish I could get in a time machine and go back to ride this and the incredible Bobs coaster again. Why is it that so many great things never last?
There’s always something newer,shinier,and faster.
Why not just goto Knoebles instead of looking for a time machine? Free entrance, free parking, cabin rentals and camping area, golf course owned by the park and great fishing and hunting in that area.
I remember too! Thanks!
Growing up in Cleveland we had Euclid Beach Amusement park (now closed) that had one of the original Flying Turns. It was and remains one of my all-time favorite rides.
Yeah! I grew up in Euclid in the 50's and 60's and used to go to Euclid Park down by 185th Street all the time. It had the rocket ship ride, the laughing lady and the taffy
We had the Flying Turns roller coaster at Euclid Beach Park in Cleveland , Ohio many years ago. I loved that ride. We also had The Racing Coastes that were moved to Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH
I grew up in Euclid and remember the racing coasters. Had the big rocket ride too
Whoever i mean whoever invented this ride is a genius!!
That genius was John Norman Bartlett (1892-1973) A British World War One aviator. He also designed the flying coaster flat ride like the Kennywood Kangaroo.
Any faster, be called 'FLYING TURDS'. Don't sit in the back car.
@@easynhonest thanks sorry I took so long to reply oof
When I went on the ride I went to knoebels yesterday and when the turning part came the seat belt cut into my stomache because of how tight it was but I'm glad that they made the seatbelt tight because it'll keep you safe in your seat
OMG I LOVED THIS RIDE AS A KID!!!!!
The simplicity of that thing makes it even cooler
Awesome looking ride, seems like 1st car gets more movement than last car.
I live across the street from a amusement park, I grew up riding the Cyclone in Coney Island and a day at Konobals was one of the funniest days ever. That ride feels just like a bob sled. Fantastic. Great park!
Do you remember the ride that was there that was a BOBSLED! Made out of wood and was an amazing ride. I never tired of riding it whenever we got to eat at Nathan's
3 climbs. Wow. That's a whole lot of maintenance and possible failures. I wish I could have experienced the Flying Turns at Euclid park before it closed. I'm so grateful that Knoebels built this ride. Much love.
If that sign says it’s a safe ride, that’s all I need to know! Lol… I’m just glad that amusement parks have maintenance crews for each ride who is trained and experienced on that certain ride and is done daily, even gets checked during the day and there’s sensors on rides so the person on the control panel knows if there’s any problems or an emergency right away and they have the controls to stop the ride immediately. I’ve been going on roller coasters since the late 70s, there bigger and scarier now than then but I still love a fun roller coaster ride and when I turn the big 6-0 in November, I’m going to Six Flags in here California, to get on all the roller coasters! Well, maybe just a couple, I can only take so much scariness in one day.. Lol. 😁
@@HappyGirl92593 Thank you for your comment. My comment wasn't about safety--it was about maintenance, failure points and down time. The more possible failure points, the more possible down time.
The Flying Turns was built like a tank. The track was rock solid. It's unlikely that a failure of a car would have resulted in sever injury or death (just a lot of road rash). I'm not aware if that ever happened, but I sure wish I could have gone on the flying turns before it closed. Euclid park had a great history, but it ended when the original owner passed. His family didn't know how to innovate or invest. :( Euclid should never die in the history of amusement parks.) It was a great innovator. As I recall, the rocket cars (circling silver rocket cars) was created at Euclid. The Euclid Steeple Chase (fast merry-go-round) Ride was sold to Cedar Point--it's a marvel and I'm in awe about how beautiful the rides is. Much love, my fellow coaster park enthusiast. I hope you have more opportunities to do what we both love. I've aged out of the most extreme rides but can still ride some really fun coasters.
@@devonboulden2496 Euclid Beach Park was fantastic! Although it was pretty tame, my favorite ride was Laugh (Laff?) in the Dark. I was pretty little at the time. You can still buy Euclid Beach salt water taffy and popcorn balls. Ah, memories ....
@@ghoulardi8875 Thank you. You shared memories that are so hard to capture. You caught a little of the memory that I can take it with me too. Wonderful memories.
Euclid was open well after the dance hall days and even after the roller rink went away. Still, this park had a big of magic in its day.
Loved this ride the one time it was running and I got to ride it. Other times the wait was just too long... Knoebels is a great hidden gem park....
That ride looks SWEET....
I definatly need to ride this! never seen anything like it!
It's the only wooden bobsled coaster operating in the world. They were once a common site but went extinct in the 60's or 70's. Knoebels revived it.
Thanks guys,I appeciate telling me those things and as a old folk,we haved to be careful of our Hearts, backs and other things,I miss my Childhood and Now Im 69 years old,Have a Blessed Day.
Wow that was better than I thought. That's a really nice ride !
Robbie Hagberg and Sue are you in the room and I can go to the store and get it tomorrow and you don't have a good night I'll see you tomorrow morning and I will be there in a few minutes or after work 🎉tomorrow morning and I can run to the store and pick up the store and get some food and I have to pick you up and I can
I love this ride!!! Its down alot but worth it when it runs.
I had only ever seen these in RCT. Thanks for the fresh perspective.
most unique coaster I've ever seen!
That is cool that the ride works like a bob sled with no tracks
Yes I love this ride many many times I’ve gone oh they had a one at Euclid Beach the memories awesome.
Those coaster cars seem pretty awesome. You seem snug and surrounded. What a cool coaster
Its a seatbelt
It's a very spacious seat, spacious enough to stretch your leg out.
wow - thanks for the POV - awesome !
This ride looks amazing! Thanks for capturing it for the rest of the world to see.
surprisingly simple coaster, love to see more like this one.
I'm glad Knoebels finally got this open after many years. It was a labor of love, but now it's here. My friend and I try to ride it every time we visit, if it's open. :)
FLYING TURNS 1 was great!
Awesome ride!
Thanks for sharing.
My neck went "Out" just watching this...
I used to ride on the Bobsled in Coney Island as a kid. Lot’s of fun!
My favorite!!! Love this ride
I like how these seats tilt!!
My favorite
It would take a lot of thought and contemplation to build such a coaster. I laughed as I watched it too. Great video.
It took years for the park to build it to specs and finally open it, but it was worth it. There's nothing quite like it in the whole country.
Looks like so much fun 🥰
Gerry Wallfird: Cool thought... We wish to go there a once by next year, I hopefully it is! Awesome video! ;)
wish i could ride this one it looks cool
There was a bunch of little kids on my kart when I went on it was awesome because the cart was so light
I'm old, how have i never heard of this? I'm no engineer, but that thing looks way overbuilt. Which of course is better than the alternative. But, damn, that's built like a train.
Very cool to bring back a ride from yesteryear.........
Cool coaster reminds me of bobsledding
That ride is so cool!
It looks like a real smooth ride.
The Efteling in the Netherlands had a similar attraction, called the 'Bobsleigh'. Huge fun to ride that one.
Thats the real deal!
I've never seen anything like this!! Awesome!!
That is so cool and I may have to ride it once,Im 68 years old and nevered liked fast coasters.
There is a mini train ride there that takes you out into the Pennsylvania forest land that you might appreciate. Even has it's own train tunnel.
If you're looking up amusement parks Knoebels would be a perfect for you because you only pay for what you ride. Free admission and free parking.
Such a nice ride
This park is straight out of RCT. A chairlift that goes up a hill for no reason. Obscure ride types like this that the park built themselves. Food stalls in the shape of the food they sell.
It’s rct you can’t tell me otherwise
I've always said this. Not to mention, a train going under a wooden coaster that has a zig-zag lift hill that's split in half, and a car ride going under another wooden coaster. Plus, the carousel and organ music. I could go on.
Should have been there 20 years ago. You could have seen all the adults around the kiddie rides puffing away on their Marlboros. It was worse than a jazz club. No sense for the health of the kids. Insane.
Knoebels was the inspiration for a lot of what you see in RCT, the creator visited tons of parks and he loved Knoebel's
The Scenic Skyway is one of the best rides in the park, the view is unbelievable. Unfortunately it's been closed all year.
@@randomtraveler9854 Have never gone on that. Probably because I am a skier and go up lifts like that all winter long.
First comment on any vid/content I seen of yours and this looked like it was fun as fluff also I never seen a coaster like that. Thanks for sharing bud
I wish i can Ride this two😊
That's a cool ride!
It's like a water park for roller-coasters 😅 so cool.
I've never seen anything like this, "Outstanding."
Have a look at 'Avalanche' Blackpool Pleasure Beach, UK.
Fav ride is Flying Turns and the Kosmotron
Love me that Cosmotron! There's a lot to love at this park, though. I can hardly wait to try their "new" Rock-o-Plane (a rescued ride from Joyland).
This bobsleigh looks awesome.
Looks like fun to me!
That's freaking awesome!!!!
Amazing Amazing Amazing Kinetic Energy
Thank you 🙏 yes 👍 nice system with levels grades joyful ride 😁👏👏👏🏆
This was great... I can smell friend onions!!! 😉👍
Wow! That looks fun!
Back in the day, Riverview in the Chicago area had a ride like this. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t as safe as this one. But it sure was fun!
I love this ride
that must feel so smooth.... there's no noise in the turns
It's butter smooth and extremely unique.
That's interesting. I bet each ride will feel different, since the coaster is free to be flung with how much wight it has.
Really Really Really Really COOL .... it's just TOO SHORT, when they pulled back into the station, i was like : IS THAT IT !!!? too short.
I'd defenitely give it a shot.
There’s been a lot of roller coaster disasters and I’m not aware if there were any that happened with this ride. It seems very safe and the people who designed and constructed it were focused on keeping the ride safe enough so it’d stand the test of time and not be demolished within a few years after being built. And it worked!
No there hasn't I'm a local. Except when they were building it it was delayed for like 3 years to work out safety issues. Since it opened no accidents. The only accident ever at Knoebles was a mentally challenged person freaked out on the skylift that takes you across the park and jumped or fell. He survived though.
They had issues with jack knifeing during testing but that was with different cars they never used. The current cars never had issues.
This looks SO cool.
This is a great ride. Been on it a number of times. Not smooth, so you get jostled quite a bit. Knoebels is a great amusement park in a beautiful setting. This particular ride was completed for several years but never opened due to safety issues. The rumor is that they couldn't get the cars to stay in the track. Always felt weird to goon rides close to it and see it just sitting there, unused. Knoebels also has the best bumper cars.
What part of the park is this next to and how long ago did it open? I haven't been to Knoebels in about 6 or 7 years now. Looks cool.
It looks fun
It was basically a trial and error build, took them many iterations to get the trains right in order for it to meet current safety standards. They actually wound up having to weigh the riders, as too much weight in each car can cause them to tip.
@@KingdaToro so more of an Action Park NJ ride then, huh? Lol.
@@stephensmith8316 The whole reason it took so long was to make it NOT an Action Park ride
Looks like a cool ride
Blackpool pleasure Beach had a simmerlar style one for the bobsled sections I rember it was such a unique feeling especial since the ride pushed you into seat rather then a lap bar harness or alike
Okay, that is unique that is actually really cool
There was one called The Flying Bobs at River View Park in Chicago back in the late 50s that dad wouldn't let me ride because I was only 8 at the time.
Opryland in Nashville used to have a ride similar called the Tree topper. it had longer coaches and went thru the tops of most trees
The only bad thing about it, the ride is way to short. 😅
And the line is way too long. But it’s worth it!
This looks awesome
That’s really cool!
Cool video. Thanx. Guy at the front has his arms over and outside the safety bars. Bet he'll be the first crying to mamma if / when he gets hurt!
Nice!!
My favorite ride there
That’s insane!!!
Wow! It just seemed over so soon. I'm not a heights person so I could take that one really easy.
