The Orihime hate gotta stop man, she's a good character and serves her purpose well. She has defence and healing powers and she has come to the aid of Ichigo multiple times. But I disagree with Nel or Yuroichi taking Kenpachi's spot vs Nnoitra, that fight was epic and showed everyone the respect Kenpachi had for Ichigo after their first bout. You also forgot to talk about the baddest of them all, Unohana.
1:33 correction, rukia starts off not being weak but weaken. She was always been a very capable shinigami however, even in a weaken state she was still able to defend herself against some hollows.

I feel the female characters are fine the way they are. Would I like to see more of then? Of course but that could be said about everyone. I would love to see more characters fleshed out that I feel needed more time. I don't feel that Kubo treats his females any different from his males.

Tbf any Shounen Manga being written at that time was under heavy scrutiny from Shueisha so even if a Mangaka wanted to give the female characters a push the editors would make them change it because Shueisha is really misguided in what the audience wants, it's better now because Kubo was able publish Burn the witch and it was a f cking success and hell arc will be monthly whenever it gets announced so hopefully Kubo will cook like always but even better with more prep time
My problem with a lot of the criticism of Orihime is that its very shallow and often very wrong. But then again most of the discourse about "representation" in anime is very shallow and superficial.
I think that what happened to Nel was due to editorial interference. I recall reading something once that Kubo was force by to include some of the more popular characters during the Hueco Mundo arc, and while it didn't mention anything about Nel, it think that reason for why she wasn't able to finish what she started.
I think the decision involving kenpachi to be in hueco mundo is to preserve him for tybw arc, being him he's gonna jump on aizen and aizen will kill him out of his annoyance, he 'needs' to be trapped in hueco mundo for his character development in twyba. about yoruichi not being a candidate to finish noitora is because she's working with kisuke and their upgrading their gears among others, this is at the same time that they maybe know that Isshin as a shinigami is back and is maybe working with them three (yoruichi, urahara, Isshin) to prepare and stall aizen as he assimilate with the hogyoku and wait for ichigo, urahara knows he can beat and not beat aizen there and then, why? because gin is there and he knows about his vendetta on aizen, why again?? its because they both have a hogyoku and has the knowledge to create one, so they know that rangiku's soul has the nails of the soul king and aizen should've extracted it leading for rangiku to not be as strong as a shinigami... In addition to this why nelliel has to be defeat by noitora is to justify the growth and hardships noitora put in to remain as an espada, and to show that their is a lingering after effect of a broken mask to an espada, as well to maybe hype up the line "the new generations of espada are a lot stronger than its predecessors" a much needed weight when it's being showed to us that the gang of ichigo and othes lieutenant level shiningami is starting to win, among the bottom feeders of espada, and to set up for espadas numbered 5-1 (its crazy how 0 is BS😂 even got off screened by captains going easy who has a fight between them as well, my opinion yami's timing is way off).

The best example I can think of a female character not given "justice" in Bleach is Momo, who was basically used to make Aizen look like a bastard not once, but twice... to the same character, and then never gets any real screen time to make up the difference. Part of this has to do with how massive Bleach's cast is, thus dictating how much Kubo is able to show, as well as his forced rush to the ending. Had he been allowed room to breathe with the TYBW arc I would like to assume he'd have been able to give at least a little screen time to lesser characters like Momo, but I genuinely don't know, and given how he sometimes forgets certain people even exist (Hanataro), I'd say it's unlikely any further treatment of people like Momo would be very satisfying to her fans. Still, Kubo is MUCH better about writing females than Kishi or Oda- Kishi's female characters are almost universally incapable of DOING anything except pine after their crush, and Oda, while a much better overall writer, tends to softball his female characters in fights, not giving them a whole lot of development through combat when compared to the male characters. Also: We do for real need to stop the Orihime hate, she's doing her best in a f****d up situation in literally ever arc and by the end she's legit right there with Ichigo fighting a got-damned Quincy GOD who can erase her from existence with a thought. She might not be an action girl like Rukia or Yoruichi but give the lady her props.
Yourichi is very utilized. She helped saved the visords, she help Ichigo get Bankai, she is connected to soi fon & kisuke, she fights in the TYWB, she fights Aizen too. 👍 Its just that Kubo makes really great characters, but for what ever reasons he didnt get to do more with them. The great progress kubo was able to make in less than 1000 chapters with so many different characters is great. Just imagine if Bleach manga was still on going weeekly. 👍
yes in my opinion, all girls have different personalities and desires, pretty much all genres we could see in general i would say considering the soul society military discipline. yoruichi unohana rukia momo hiyori lisa nanao senjumaru hikifune orihime and so on, each one with a quirky side of feminine energy. i do love mah bleach girls.
You forgot our favorite females from TYBW Unohana and Masaki and to answer your question yes especially cause Kubo actually gives his female cast personalities character development and makes them bad ass they are also mad sexy most animes can’t do both. Plus most of them are well written even with few screen time
it's fair to say that kubo is one of the few authors that treats women well in shonen. When I look at bleach female cast and compare it with many other mangas, There's not as many shonens or mangas in general as we may think that does it at this level besides fmab, fate (seinen), csm, cowboy bebop, black lagoon, (it's a seinen though), kingdom (seinen) sure, well written female characters is common among these but if we look to the number of well written female characters as a whole, especially in main stream shonen, there's not as numerous good female characters as we may think.
I love Bleach's female cast but the biggest issue is they barely get a win. On top of my head the only wins I can think about is Rukia's against espada 9 and As nödt. Yoruichi doesn't win her fight, Nel does not win against Nnoitra, Orihime is a support so she does not have any fights, Haribel loses against Aizen's slash and Yhwach. Nor Rangiku or Momo has a win I can remember of (excluding fillers). While most of the male cast be villain (Grimmjow, Aizen, Askin) or be a side character (any male lieutenant you can think of even Ganju) has at least has 1 win against an opponent.

Most of them are different in the manga especially orihime. I dont like how the anime treated her like at all. Her character felt more realistic in the manga since she was someone who looks after others rather then herself. She was like a ray of hope. I do agree rukia was the best female character and i argue orhime is either second or third. I just felt like the anime did alot of them little justice.

The matter of seeing Rangiku's bankai would be impossible, since a part of her soul was stolen from her to feed the hogyoku. Unless there's a chance of them getting it from Aizen, if that is still possible

Honestly, the only female character I have a problem with in the series is Orihime. Not early-series Orihime, she was a goddamn gift and will not be slandered in this household. But it feels like that when the Soul Society Arc came to an end, her character became so Ichigo-focused, it was a bit irritating, and only got more so as time passed. Maybe if it that aspect of her character was there for a few episodes before shifting back into who she once was, I would not have a problem with it; it's good that we're temporarily delving into an aspect of her character that was only hinted at before. But there's only so many times I can hear her say/think "Kurosaki-kun" before I want to gauge my ears out, wondering where my precious cinnamon roll went. Edit: Just to clarify, this isn't really a criticism of Orihime herself, just how she was written. I loved her in the first two arcs, and I still have a soft spot for her today. I just don't like the direction Kubo took with her.
i have to disagree on some of them, Rukia, Masaki, Orihime, Yorouichi, were pillars for the plot as we know it, and other ones like Senjumaru, Unohana, Hikifune and such were important for several subplots and character developement and even lore as well.
Yoruichi has a bankai, she was the one to say every person that has became a captain had bankai before they were a captain with the sol exception of Kenpachi. This confirms she has a bankai, also I don't remember where but it was stated I think by Kubo that she actually spends time with her Zanpakuto every once in a while because it wants her to.
Bleach isn’t said to have the best female cast in the big 3. Most ppl say it’s one piece (and it objectively is one piece too). But most ppl simp for bleach female characters and say they’re the best designed, not written.
I think there are definitely holes in bleach's treatment of women. But the only actual problem is the maybe at times not appropriate fanservice. There are others but as i'll explain they aren't specifically a women problem. The fanservice is the only actual girls only issue. Getting a little too much at times or badly timed. It is absolutely true that the women didn't get pushed enough and do enough but that's not specifically a gender thing. Due to how many characters there are and how much he tries to spread around the screen time most of the characters in the series don't do much. Almost all of the male characters also don't amount to very much or appear often. This goes for the MC too even ichigo was sidelined for large sections of the story. The only ones who get pushed too much are toshiro, kenpachi and mayuri. They are always shafting other characters. Kenpachi did 2 women dirty nel and unohana. They are all men but thats just probability since there are way more men in bleach than women. As evidence of this, If you look at burn the witch the 2 main characters are women and so far there aren't many characters so the problem with bleach doesn't exist there. Women are doing the most. It's only a one shot so it doesn't count really but he has another manga called rune master urara where the 2 main characters are also women. Sad thing is most people praising or criticizing haven't read either of them. Rukia topped the last 2 polls of the series and unlike some of the other women in the series nobody can argue that it was due to horny simping. Even in series like chainsawman thirsty dawgs definitely play a part in the votes and besides that cast is so female dominated. Bleach is mostly men so that's a real achievement on her part. For orihime he just did too little. Idk if you finished the manga but she definitely over the series cemented her place as a main character (remember that even main characters don't do all that much or appear often in bleach) but he just needed to do more of what he was already doing with her to make her goat status its not enough what we got. But she's super interesting since she doesn't like hurting people but she also wants to be useful on the front lines of battle. Nowadays bleach's female cast isn't really praised as much. There are a lot more people criticizing it.

The answer is surprisingly both, it really depends on which character it is. But Bleach has a large cast and some are inevitably going to to get shafted. The sexualization of women sometimes goes overboard/into creepy territory. When the guys get sexualized, that doesn't happen as often. Female characters usually got rescued from the drag-out-knock-out fights, sometime before the battle ended, which is a crying shame because seeing female characters stand victorious from those fights is really satisfying. Female character usually got badass power ups like bankai reveals and training montages later in the story (think ttybw arc) compared to male characters. Romance options weren't great, but Bleach's focus definitely isn't romance. There weren't a lot of male and female character relationships that were important and explored in depth. But when they were, they were fire. 🔥
What your asking for is not characters development its just wins at the end of fights, like nel you miss the whole point that shes got two sides the sweet and loving kid nel that will cheer ichigo on though anything and the adult one thats a cold sadist that feels higher then the other espadas cause of her rank yet you boiled it down to should of won a fight winning the fight gives her no growth cause its means she was right to act better then the mantis man even infact she still acts like that her development would be to get past the act of feeling better then everyone not named ichigo

Bleach has an amazing female cast that is only held back by how little screen time some of them get but that’s not a female character exclusive issue. Be that as it may though seeing so many competent and unique women characters in one show especially a shonen I feel doesn’t happen very often. Like almost all of them barring maybe 3 of them are combatants and even the ones that aren’t (like Orihime lord what did Studio Pierrot do to you) are still useful and can be impactful. No, bleach female characters are perfect. Any more would turn them into the annoying Western female characters in fiction. The female characters in bleach are as important as the male characters. Ichigo is the most important character of the show and no other character, both male or female shares this spotlight which is one of the best things about bleach. Yoruichi is the most powerful lightning user in bleach. Unohana is the first kenpachi. Senjumaru is one of the most important soul reapers and most powerful. Rukia avenges her brother in a spectacular fashion. The argument of "wanting them to play a bigger role" is the exact same argument for the male characters, so this topic feels pointless in my opinion. And God I'm tired of hearing the phrase "strong women". It's a shonen anime. It's meant to appeal to the fantasy of young boys/men. Such fantasies include being a badass ass kicking hero. No I don’t think bleach did a good job with them. In the last season of a thousand years blood war, did you ever see a female characters finish her own fight without a male character cutting in to save her? Rukia needed Byakuya to come in. Think about how Ichigo fought three female enemies and tried to avoid killing them and don’t take them seriously. Orihime.. to be honest orihime is just boobs. Just because a character is a side character it doesn’t mean the they have to be written badly. Yeah there’s women and they exist. But that’s it. They don’t do anything significant compared to their male counterparts. I guess compared to many other shounen anime of that generation, Bleach is a bit better. But today? Nah. And if today Bleach is what represents good female representation, shounen genre overall still has terrible female representation. Yourichi is very utilized. She helped saved the visords, she help Ichigo get Bankai, she is connected to soi fon & kisuke, she fights in the TYWB, she fights Aizen too. 👍
Its just that Kubo makes really great characters, but for what ever reasons he didnt get to do more with them. The great progress kubo was able to make in less than 1000 chapters with so many different characters is great. Just imagine if Bleach manga was still on going weeekly. 👍

it's fair to say that kubo is one of the few authors that treats women well in shonen.
When I look at bleach female cast and compare it with many other mangas, There's not as many shonens or mangas in general as we may think that does it at this level besides fmab, fate (seinen), csm, cowboy bebop, black lagoon, (it's a seinen though), kingdom (seinen)
sure, well written female characters is common among these but if we look to the number of well written female characters as a whole, especially in main stream shonen, there's not as numerous good female characters as we may think.
I love Bleach's female cast but the biggest issue is they barely get a win. On top of my head the only wins I can think about is Rukia's against espada 9 and As nödt. Yoruichi doesn't win her fight, Nel does not win against Nnoitra, Orihime is a support so she does not have any fights, Haribel loses against Aizen's slash and Yhwach. Nor Rangiku or Momo has a win I can remember of (excluding fillers). While most of the male cast be villain (Grimmjow, Aizen, Askin) or be a side character (any male lieutenant you can think of even Ganju) has at least has 1 win against an opponent.

Most of them are different in the manga especially orihime. I dont like how the anime treated her like at all. Her character felt more realistic in the manga since she was someone who looks after others rather then herself. She was like a ray of hope. I do agree rukia was the best female character and i argue orhime is either second or third. I just felt like the anime did alot of them little justice.

Honestly, the only female character I have a problem with in the series is Orihime. Not early-series Orihime, she was a goddamn gift and will not be slandered in this household. But it feels like that when the Soul Society Arc came to an end, her character became so Ichigo-focused, it was a bit irritating, and only got more so as time passed. Maybe if it that aspect of her character was there for a few episodes before shifting back into who she once was, I would not have a problem with it; it's good that we're temporarily delving into an aspect of her character that was only hinted at before. But there's only so many times I can hear her say/think "Kurosaki-kun" before I want to gauge my ears out, wondering where my precious cinnamon roll went.
Edit: Just to clarify, this isn't really a criticism of Orihime herself, just how she was written. I loved her in the first two arcs, and I still have a soft spot for her today. I just don't like the direction Kubo took with her.
I have the same problem
i have to disagree on some of them, Rukia, Masaki, Orihime, Yorouichi, were pillars for the plot as we know it, and other ones like Senjumaru, Unohana, Hikifune and such were important for several subplots and character developement and even lore as well.
Bleach is the king of anime
Yoruichi has a bankai, she was the one to say every person that has became a captain had bankai before they were a captain with the sol exception of Kenpachi. This confirms she has a bankai, also I don't remember where but it was stated I think by Kubo that she actually spends time with her Zanpakuto every once in a while because it wants her to.
Bleach isn’t said to have the best female cast in the big 3. Most ppl say it’s one piece (and it objectively is one piece too). But most ppl simp for bleach female characters and say they’re the best designed, not written.

I think there are definitely holes in bleach's treatment of women. But the only actual problem is the maybe at times not appropriate fanservice. There are others but as i'll explain they aren't specifically a women problem. The fanservice is the only actual girls only issue. Getting a little too much at times or badly timed.
It is absolutely true that the women didn't get pushed enough and do enough but that's not specifically a gender thing. Due to how many characters there are and how much he tries to spread around the screen time most of the characters in the series don't do much. Almost all of the male characters also don't amount to very much or appear often. This goes for the MC too even ichigo was sidelined for large sections of the story.
The only ones who get pushed too much are toshiro, kenpachi and mayuri. They are always shafting other characters. Kenpachi did 2 women dirty nel and unohana. They are all men but thats just probability since there are way more men in bleach than women.
As evidence of this, If you look at burn the witch the 2 main characters are women and so far there aren't many characters so the problem with bleach doesn't exist there. Women are doing the most. It's only a one shot so it doesn't count really but he has another manga called rune master urara where the 2 main characters are also women. Sad thing is most people praising or criticizing haven't read either of them.
Rukia topped the last 2 polls of the series and unlike some of the other women in the series nobody can argue that it was due to horny simping. Even in series like chainsawman thirsty dawgs definitely play a part in the votes and besides that cast is so female dominated. Bleach is mostly men so that's a real achievement on her part.
For orihime he just did too little. Idk if you finished the manga but she definitely over the series cemented her place as a main character (remember that even main characters don't do all that much or appear often in bleach) but he just needed to do more of what he was already doing with her to make her goat status its not enough what we got. But she's super interesting since she doesn't like hurting people but she also wants to be useful on the front lines of battle.
Nowadays bleach's female cast isn't really praised as much. There are a lot more people criticizing it.
And a new females like Bambietta and Candice are also really hmm interesting yeah that it interesting hope to see them in Hell arc somehow.

I definitely agree that the female cast could of been better. But when you compare to the rest of anime, bleach does there female characters well
The answer is surprisingly both, it really depends on which character it is. But Bleach has a large cast and some are inevitably going to to get shafted. The sexualization of women sometimes goes overboard/into creepy territory. When the guys get sexualized, that doesn't happen as often. Female characters usually got rescued from the drag-out-knock-out fights, sometime before the battle ended, which is a crying shame because seeing female characters stand victorious from those fights is really satisfying. Female character usually got badass power ups like bankai reveals and training montages later in the story (think ttybw arc) compared to male characters. Romance options weren't great, but Bleach's focus definitely isn't romance. There weren't a lot of male and female character relationships that were important and explored in depth. But when they were, they were fire. 🔥

Bleach has an amazing female cast that is only held back by how little screen time some of them get but that’s not a female character exclusive issue. Be that as it may though seeing so many competent and unique women characters in one show especially a shonen I feel doesn’t happen very often. Like almost all of them barring maybe 3 of them are combatants and even the ones that aren’t (like Orihime lord what did Studio Pierrot do to you) are still useful and can be impactful. They have different goals, different stories, different personalities, etc I could go on
Orihime isnt a side character she is the main heroine and part of the main cast, and her role in the series is huge, so no bleach women are perfect they dont need more you are just complaining over what you wanted

Naruto has notable differences between each of their females, handful of them are good, and have lots of female characters in general

No, bleach female characters are perfect. Any more would turn them into the annoying Western female characters in fiction. The female characters in bleach are as important as the male characters. Ichigo is the most important character of the show and no other character, both male or female shares this spotlight which is one of the best things about bleach.
Yoruichi is the most powerful lightning user in bleach.
Unohana is the first kenpachi.
Senjumaru is one of the most important soul reapers and most powerful.
Rukia avenges her brother in a spectacular fashion.
The argument of "wanting them to play a bigger role" is the exact same argument for the male characters, so this topic feels pointless in my opinion.

No I don’t think bleach did a good job with them. In the last season of a thousand years blood war, did you ever see a female characters finish her own fight without a male character cutting in to save her? Rukia needed Byakuya to come in. Think about how Ichigo fought three female enemies and tried to avoid killing them and don’t take them seriously. Orihime.. to be honest orihime is just boobs. Just because a character is a side character it doesn’t mean the they have to be written badly. Yeah there’s women and they exist. But that’s it. They don’t do anything significant compared to their male counterparts.
I guess compared to many other shounen anime of that generation, Bleach is a bit better. But today? Nah. And if today Bleach is what represents good female representation, shounen genre overall still has terrible female representation.
I can see how that is tho due to the Japanese culture and how they view women. Not saying it didn’t get better but still has a long way to go.
