  • One of the biggest questions when buying a large fifth wheel is “what type of truck do I need?” Basically, the decision comes down to the number of rear wheels you want: dually or single. Once you decided on the number of wheels, then you must then decide on your brand of truck: Ford, Chevy, or Dodge.
    The truck brand part is easy for us but the wheel decision was much more involved. We haven’t made the final decision on which fifth wheel RV we are buying just yet, but we do know it will be 40 feet or larger. After doing considerable research about GVW, towing capacity, and more, we made a decision we feel is best for us. Watch the video to find out whether we chose a dually or a single rear truck, and also which brand we chose.

    The towing power of the dually is incredible! So amazing you found something with such capacity. I'm so glad you didn't reveal what 5th wheel you're going with yet... it's very exciting and we're not ready for this part of the journey to be over. Can't wait to see the announcement in the coming days!

    Coming as I'm a diesel mechanic I would say your best option is to get an srw throw 2 supersingles and air bags in the rear. Makes it great for towing and you can always take the supersingles off so that you don't have to daily with essentially I dually. Have a great day hope I could help 👍

    Most banks and drive thrus now accommodate Dually. Extra rear wheels are a safety plus.

    My first truck was a 2001 Ford F-150 king ranch had it for a couple years and I loved it had it for 3 years till I had to get rid of it since it didn’t pass my states inspection my freshman year of college I had some money saved up and got me 2013 ram 1500 big horn, I loved that truck too but I replaced it and got something newer and my first real pay check was used as a down payment for the truck I currently own a 2018 sliverado 1500 LT, I’ve loved all my truck I like all brands but maybe I like my Silverado more because since it’s newer it has more convenient features to me that the other trucks didn’t offer cuz of time and what I could afford at the time.

    I got a Chevy Silverado Texas addition 9,000 maybe can go up to 12,000-12,500. But we need to get up too 15,000 for are 5th wheel trailer. Maybe adding dul tires turbo shocks or springs. Or maybe can remove weight from the trailer don't really want to get another truck or afford a 2500 less it's used and we already had one and it broke down.

    Something you need to condenser is the DOT will require you to have a class A CDL if your combined truck and trailer GVWR is over 26,000 pounds. So if your trucks GVWR is 14,000 and your trailer is 12,001 you will need a class A CDL

    I’m looking at purchasing a new 2022 F350. I’m also purchasing a 5th wheel camper that weighs 14,300 lbs (dry weight). About 16,800 with cargo. Would a dually be needed or can I get by with SRW. I’m hearing mixed reviews but some have pointed out the “security” a dually gives while driving. To add, I won’t be towing this camper but 1-2 a month. Please help!

    • @gfexplorers
      @gfexplorers  Před 2 lety +2

      Karl, can you get by with an SRW, short answer, yes. You mention you are only pulling 1-2 months, so if its going to be your daily drive, well, a dually is a massive daily driver for a couple of months of towing! Another consideration is will you be towing in the mountains? That could sway your decision, as well.
      Take a closer look at your numbers: A properly equipped 350srw is rated at 21,700 5th wheel tow capacity. If you apply the 80% rule I talk about in the video, that takes you to 17,360 which IS still below your 16,800-5th wheel GVWR. But look deeper; The cargo capacity is around 3,500 pounds on the SRW. I'm guessing your pin weight will be around 2,500 pounds. That leaves 1,000 pounds for passengers, fuel and stuff. 36 gallons of diesel is going to be around 280lbs. 2 adults around 500 pounds leaves you with around 215 pounds of stuff in the truck and you are at max GVWR, that's not much tool, cargo or backseat passengers. To me, that's the issue - you are pushing a SRW GVWR with the rig you are looking to pull.
      Did I answer your question, I'm sure I just made it even more confusing and added additional things to think about! The SRW can certainly pull it, you'll be near max truck GVWR. Do you want a DRW as a daily drive? The short amount of time you're pulling, is it in the mountains? Ultimately, what's your comfort factor? Those are questions only you can answer. Price really isn't an issue; they are only a grand or so off each other. Oh, if you have time to wait, order vs. trying to find used, prices are stupid crazy in the used market right now! Good luck! Let me know what you choose!

    • @karlbrown5569
      @karlbrown5569 Před 2 lety

      @@gfexplorers thanks for the quick response. I need to clarify. I’ll be pulling this Montana camper about 1 to 2 times per month . I live in the Midwest (Indiana) and will more than likely be throughout the Midwest for camping. Occasionally I may venture out west or even south east. A dually as a daily driver isn’t ideal but it may be needed.

    • @gfexplorers
      @gfexplorers  Před 2 lety +1

      Another consideration is if you want to upgrade your 5th wheel, you're at the upper limits of what a SRW can tow. For me, the biggest thing is the trucks GVWR. Good luck!
