      Quads have always been a distraction, and really, outside of quad racing and tight environment film making, they're rarely the best choice for eany job, and they eat so many batteries per working day that you need shares in a lithium mine to recoup costs.
      Heli's like Yamaha's R-Max and Fazer are better for agriculture and some cinema applications, wings are better for mapping and deliveries, especially these VTOL ones. Sports with big areanas, like sportscar racing, NASCAR, various horse racing, golf, mountain bike racing, those could really take advantage of VTOL, for the ability to hover or chase for a shot, stay airborn longer, and be much quieter gliding past at low throttle while a gimbal keeps a camera on the action. For the animal participant events like gallops or greyhounds, the lower noise will be less issue to have accidentally spook the animals.
      News crews, emergency services, security, police, all could take advantage of these to get on site quicker - A police dept could launch one from thier own carpark or rooftop, and have it loiter over an incident scene before officers are even able to arrive. The level of co-ordination that the overview vision will enable, will save lives and save money.

    Have you seen the cl-84 videos?
    It's an excellent tilt-wing design that makes very good use of the wings in the vertical mode, allowing excellent yaw/rotation control of the platform, and the tilted wing provides good STOL performance, for applications (many) that have enough room for STOL operation, saving some degree of battery life...anyway, the winged drone allows for much longer loitering times, with quieter, more energy-efficient loitering in motion, but with quite quick transition to fully vertical operation.

    Which LIDAR sensor did you use and how easy was it to mount that payload in the Trinity?
    I think you missed an opportunity to call out the endurance of the aircraft in the mission planning phase. I caught that the flight plan was almost 2 hours for the photo capture but was going to be able to finish on just one battery with 8% charge remaining. That much area without having to swap batteries is pretty amazing!

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Quantum Systems has an array of plug and play sensors that you can purchase as add-ons. The LiDAR that we used is from Yellow Scan and it only takes about 5 min to swap out one payload for another. We were able to complete this initial mission with one battery swap and still had a reserve of 85% when we landed with the second battery as most of the battery drainage was on the landing and takeoff. With my quad system, it took about 6 battery swaps, almost 60 min worth of time was eaten up by waiting for the drone to come back and swap out batteries. I hope that explains some of the efficiencies gained!

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  Před 4 měsíci +2

      VTOL is more efficient when it comes to large data capture. It has to do with the aerodynamics of a plane flying and capturing data vs a big box with 4 motors flying in the sky capturing data. With my drone it took about 5-6 hours to capture this site, with a VTOL it took just under 2 hours to complete the same task.

    • @jerseyshoredroneservices225

      Fixed wing drones generate lift from their wings so they can go much further on the same amount of energy.

      @@DylanGorman it is a worthy conversation to have. I've struggled for years to explain to people that Quads don't scale up. all these "quad" air taxis will never be successful.
      I would go to the various manned quad companies and grill them, and they knew surprisingly little. Traditional helicopters are far more capable, safer, and efficient at large scale. but having that conversation with people has proven difficult. I'm a big fan of the VTOL model at smaller scales where appropriate because it's just so much more efficient and capable.
      I come at this as a CFI-I in both Airplanes and Helicopters, as well as holding Commercial UAS, and as a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer. So it's not as if I don't know what I'm talking about when I approach these people. But getting them to understand and accept basic aerodynamics has been difficult. Things like autorotation, aspect ratio, Reynolds number implications, thrust to weight ratio, tip speed, weight, power requirements, limitations of parachutes, and much more.
      Each type has its uses. Each application is best done with a particular type. People need to know the pros and cons of each, understand the limitations of each, to know what works where and why. I know hobbyists and stuff may not all care, and most don't need to for what they are doing. But commercial drone operators are trying to be profitable, and manned aircraft companies need to understand the limits of what they are trying to do to avoid needless death.

      When your customer wants a high-end product of a large area you don't want a cheap drone. This isn't for the DSP who's servicing local builders with half acre lots.
      They're also talking about using LIDAR which adds tens of thousands of dollars to the price of the gear. This whole video has nothing to do with the kind of situation where you would want a "cheap drone".
