      Do you feel responsible for Trump? what the fuck was that all about

    • @RahulSsup
      @RahulSsup Před 7 lety +9

      That question was asked on the basis that, Media has been responsible lately for the popularity of Trump. Trump has been given way too much air time than he deserves. Since, John Oliver calls himself a comedian, but we all know, that some people DO take his show seriously for real world news and not entirely just for comedy purposes. That's why, the focus of his show on Trump has certainly been slightly responsible, for Trump's popularity as well.

    • @malutz1
      @malutz1 Před 7 lety +30

      But he purposefully avoided talking about him on almost every show. He's done only a couple segments on him, and only when it became likely Trump would win the nomination.

    • @debbieh7063
      @debbieh7063 Před 7 lety +17

      also, his discussion of Trump has been far more critical of him as a candidate than most of the news media. they mess around and poke at the issue, but they don't really challenge it. Like, his segments on Trump have basically dismantled all of the remotely reasonable reasons people have for voting for him. his show, and the daily show have been the only ones to actually look at Trump as a candidate and evaluate his ability to do anything.

    • @babybirdhome
      @babybirdhome Před 7 lety +2

      Why do I bite the troll's bait?
      I'm willing to bet that _in addition to those things_ (granting you a presumption that you are even correct in the first place), you would also find that he presents ample actual evidence in support of whatever his assertions as well.
      It's a fallacy that engaging in ad hominems, out of context quotes, and poor analogies automatically negates all evidence which doesn't contain any of those things. Even a liar can tell the truth, and their being a liar in no way alters that truth- they are two entirely separate and unrelated things.

Bias is obvious, but he gives a very interesting perspective on these issues. His bias doesn't discredits the facts he presents. You can interpret those facts differently, but facts are facts. And he's giving us his take on them.

He won because his show goes really deep into issues other people ignore, because of his brilliant practical demonstrations. Founding your own church, buying other people's debts, these are actions that are absolutely unique in the TV industry and there was not even one fucking comment about any of that. It only makes it that much more obvious why Last Week Tonight deserved to win this award.

      That's what reporters have to be all the time, the fact that they have decided to start doing it to John Oliver at an awards show means they are really angry with the satirical commentary pointing out their ineptitude with nearly all of the political candidates this last 12 months.
      It was the same with Sorkins 'Newsroom'. Journalists hated it because it told them they did a shit job.
      These reporters were insinuating that because Oliver made jokes about Trump he allowed him to gain so much traction. In reality, when the reporters don't shut Trump or any other bullshit political candidate down the moment they appear in their newspapers or broadcasts, they have failed.

      While that may speak volumes about Oliver and others like him, it actually does so only because he fills a gap he shouldn't be filling. If we had real mainstream journalism (you can find plenty of excellent facts - that's what he does - and journalists everywhere), he would be a comedian, period. He doesn't go into the field or into a warzone or whatever. He googles and he makes us laugh.
      We don't have the newspapers anymore. We're fucked because we're a generation raised on people who mirror that lack and we mistake this mirror for reality.

      Seeing all your replies, Steven Krazier, the opposite seems to be true. You don't seem to construct any serious argument to Hillary (I mean, no one really likes her, but she is the best of a bad bunch caused by your American two horse presidential system) while swearing often and to the point of incoherence.
      And on the way traditional media has gone after Trump, it has been highlighted by many that news moderators did not do a good enough job at fact checking and pulling up Trumps incorrect statements, allowing him to weave a fantastical fiction of the current American predicament. Although I have to admit, the foreign media absolutely hates Trump, with even the most right wing, xenophobic British newspapers railing hard against Trump despite championing equally disgusting characters at home (Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, ect.).

Then should do the same about trumps foundations and tax and birther movement. I know these are big words you might not understand. I would recommend going back to school to get a course in advanced English. I also recommend taking the short bus sounds more like your speed.

      John Oliver was the only one who avoided doing any stories about him until it was clear he was the front runner for the Republican nomination. They had to agree that Trump was here to stay until at least the end of the elections in November and start actually reporting on his activities. Everyone else was on him since day one.

    How could Oliver be responsible for Trump? He did his best to ignore the man until the realization came over us all that this guy was going to win the GOP nomination. Which he then tore into Trump with more facts than any media networked bother to do. Idk who asked that but wow.
    Also to his answer about comedy being needed in an election year. Last night "through the wormhole with Morgan Freeman" asked the question can we all become geniuses and one of the interesting things I learned was how brains react differently to comedy and fear. Fear will focus the brain making it harder to have insightful moments so it is no surprise that Trump's campaign of fear mongering attracts ignorance like bugs to a bug zapper, comedy however relaxes the brain allowing more insightful thought processes. So he shouldn't undervalue at all what comedy can do for this country, especially now.

That having been said, part, if not most of The Daily Show's charm came from its host's charisma - the same can be said of The Colbert Report. No matter who you put as the replacement, the show would be forever changed, for better or for worse.
      With his own show, John Oliver doesn't have to worry about previous fans, sticking with an established format, or dealing with Comedy Central's policies. He's probably better off where he is.
