How much power does an E39 540i put down???

  • The e39 generation 540i (97-03) is very underrated power wise. The factory claimed only 282 crank horsepower, so we checked to see how much it puts down at the wheels in the real world. If your not familiar with what these put down you are bound to be surprised one way or another! As always thanks for watching guys, let me know what you think in the comments!!

      @@petergriffin7401 -- Have you driven both cars? If you had, you wouldn't say that. Back in 2007, I was shopping for a 5-series, and I really wanted an E34 M5. I test drove two very nice examples, and they were quite fast, but I couldn't get over the very old looking interior, and I really don't like the look of the rear end, especially the taillights. Then I decided to drive an '03 540i 6spd w/M appearance package... I bought the '03 540i the same day.
      The E39 just feels so much more modern than the E34! And, the 540i actually felt quicker than the M5, since the 540's V8 has more torque down low than the M5's inline-6. The interior of the 540 is sooooo much nicer than the E34's too, and the E39 is much better to look at, especially with the M5 bumpers that come with the M appearance package.
      Overall, the E39 is a quantum leap over the E34... Although that E34 M5 would be worth much more now!

    • @andrewkerman5347
      @andrewkerman5347  Před 7 lety

      the only mods that aren't factory parts are a dinan cai and a muffler delete. The other two parts are right off of a 97-98 car. if you research the results of a 97-98 car (this is a 99) you will find they typically produce right about the same amount of power this car did. In other words this car is equivalent to a 97-98 car which came stock with the stock catless exhaust manifolds and a larger intake manifold. Even if it retained the original 99-03 parts it would have only produced about 10 less hp which is still significantly more then you would expect from a supposed 282hp engine. At a typical 15% driveline loss with a manual transmission the car should only produce about 240whp. These cars are very underrated.

      With just the resonator deleted its very mild. I loved that because the car is too quiet stock. Made it hard to drive stick since I couldn't hear the motor. Very little drone too. With the straight pipe it's turned up to 11 outside the car, sounds amazing but still very livable inside. Drones a little bit but the e39 is such a tank the noise inside is nothing compared to the sound outside the car.

    @EricNiconovich Před 7 lety +1

    You said in the video that you added mods to the car without tuning the ecu . Modern vehicles with ecu's are tuned to make the most power with the equipment on the car. If you change the hardware but not the ecu tuning you most frequently see what you're seeing here on the dyno where it looses a bit where you expect it to have gains. Watch this video featuring Steve Dinan, he explains it in better detail. czcams.com/video/6bkDKqoGSdU/video.html
    I'm not saying not to mod them, because we all love to do, but, maybe don't expect drastic performance increases before you pair the hardware with some software. Something that he doesn't go into much detail in the video is that sometimes you can adjust the volume of the intake by changing the diameter for different lengths around where the mass air sensor is to adjust what the computer reads in order to fool it into working correctly, but this is alot of trial and error. This is likely what I'll be doing with my e34 m60 when I get around to my restoration.

    • @andrewkerman5347
      @andrewkerman5347  Před 7 lety

      Much of what you are saying is very true and maybe i didn't explain this clearly enough in the video but I did see a pretty decent increase in power. In line with what you are saying I was not expecting this and do eventually plan to tune the ecu correctly. Although I didn't have a before and after comparison the car did produce over 10hp more than a stock 540 would. Where I lost power was on the bottom end, due to vanos problems. I didn't go into great detail in the video on this and maybe this will be the subject of a future video but I replaced my timing chain guides and vanos seals and as a result of these repairs I have an engine light that won't go out. I think it is causing the vanos to default to one position thus they are not phasing the cams to increase torque at low rpms. Hope this makes sense, but the car did in fact gain hp from the mods performed much to my surprise in fact!

      no problem man! happy to help a fellow e39er! Thanks for the subscription! my timing chain guides went at 141k miles and the general consensus seems to be that it happens around 150k. Another common cause of a chatter sound is the crappy dual mass flywheel. I replaced mine with a single mass aluminum JBR flywheel, although not having the dual mass will result in chatter as well except the single mass is much lighter and more fun to drive. I also added a southbend clutch with sprung hub disc, this got rid of most of the chatter. The flywheel chatter will be more apparent from the side of the car looking under, while the chain guide sounds come from the front of the engine.

I also added a southbend clutch with sprung hub disc, this got rid of most of the chatter. The flywheel chatter will be more apparent from the side of the car looking under, while the chain guide sounds come from the front of the engine.

    what kind of dyno is this? Mustang dyno? dynojet?

    • @andrewkerman5347

      Land and Sea Dyno-mite with an eddy current brake. Closer to a mustang dyno than dynojet since its a loaded dyno

    Depends on who you ask. If you ask a 540i pilot, he'll swear his car is the fastest thing on Earth and a better value than an M5. He'll also claim the car gets 32 miles per gallon at 110 miles per hour. 540i pilots are hilarious.

    nice video dude , i just have a custion , i change my suspencion from air to spring , i remove the suspencion air pump and the onboart display allwais says "Load Level Inactive " i now it star saying since i desconect the pump but how i can delete that "Load Level Inactive" shit , can see my avg speed o fuel cons because of that , and ther is not clear info on this model my is a e39 97 m62b44, and yeah it is a epic drive , and with the muffler delete , it screams power! jeremy clarkson style

    • @xaimerom28
      @xaimerom28 Před 8 lety

      thx man , it seems in mexico all e39 from this year are pneumatic suspension and it's a pain when they go bad, like 450us bad , so any mods for the engine your recommend?

    • @andrewkerman5347
      @andrewkerman5347  Před 7 lety

      really wow i had no idea e39s ever came with air suspension. Honestly factory air ride sucks when they go it is just dumb how much it costs to replace as you mentioned and honestly the benefits really aren't there with air ride. Wish I could help you on error in the dash but i honestly don't know. For the engine I recommend an intake, m60 manifold if its a 99-2003 and headers. If you have a 99-03 the factory 97-98 non catted exhaust manifolds are a cheap upgrade with about 15 hp but if you have the dough headers will be even better.

    • @xaimerom28
      @xaimerom28 Před 7 lety

      yeah it's a bit difficult been a e39 owner in mexico, some parts are really like really cheap , i buy 2 spring cushions oem from a 2003 e39 from 50us, and then a friend brake my cup holders ,,80 funking dolas for 2 console cup holders it's insane hahaha they just don't know what they have and the mods well you can't just go out and find any mods for this car when only you and other few people have e39, literally in the 2 years the i have this car i only have seen like 4 e39 , that's maybe the reason i love this car so much , it's unique , like you say in one of your videos dude , it's civilized but a beast at the same time, kind of like a split personality hahaha
      really appreciate the advice many thanks,

      But I'm 19, so almost not a teenager. Anyways, I barely rip it like ever. I want to do a 0 60 but once I do a fluid change on the transmission. But not at every stop like some idiots would do. That would ruin the fuel economy
