Budget 4S Battery Test!

  • I have been wanting to do this for awhile. A 4S budget battery test.
    Our Traxxas X-Maxx, with it's big size and weight puts a heavy load on the batteries. When we first got it, we ran Traxxas batteries - and puffed them quickly!
    Over time, we have run multiple brands of batteries in this truck - with varying results. Some batteries will literally puff on the first use depending on how hard we use them during that run!
    I was able to pick up 3 sets of budget-minded batteries to test. All cost less than $100 for a pair!
    YouMe 6500mah, 60C: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
    Ovonic 4S 6500mah, 50C (exact spec not available at this moment): rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
    Goldbat 5000mah, 50C: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
    To test these batteries, we did 3 things:
    1) a voltage hold test where we charged the batteries and measured how much voltage drop there was over 24hrs.
    2) run time and voltage drain test. We ran the batteries as hard as possible to see (a) how long they ran, time, (b) did they puff, and (c) how evenly did all of the cells drain.
    3) driving feel - could I, as the driver, tell any difference in power level or performance.
    Test 1 starts at 1:20
    Test 2 starts at 4:06 for the GoldBat, 7:15 for Ovonic, and 9:08 for YouMe
    Test 3 starts at 11:51
    Final results are shown at 12:26

    I'm a big Ovonic fan. I run multiple versions in my RC's. Charge time and voltage drop are good and steady. 2s, 7.4v, 6400mah, 50c Ovonic will last over 2 hours constant run in a TRX-4 Sport. I'd say their 5200mah 50c is the best in most fast running vehicles of mine. This of course is relevant towards 2s Lipos only.

    I am rather surprised to see the run times on the Traxxas X-Maxx on 8s lipo's I thought they'd all last a good 20 plus minutes. • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  Před 3 lety +2

      Honestly, this test was a little deceiving from a total run time. That is a rather large field, and I was purposely going almost full throttle to full break. I was pushing the truck so hard to test the batteries, that it even went into overheat multiple times.
      I still use all of these batteries today for normal bash sessions, and they all last me a nice amount of time - I never really test it. But certainly in that 20+ min range like you would normally expect.

      Getting a soldering iron will be a great help to you in this hobby. It honestly surprises me how often I solder things.
      Still, yes, you can get many of these batteries with the standard TRX plug. Here are a few I have had good luck with in the past:
      Power Hobby: amzn.to/32393GJ
      YouMe: amzn.to/3fX5GcH

      @RoadsideRC  Před 3 lety

      Depends on how big it is.
      Most of these batteries are around 40mm wide and tall.
      There are folks who make a battery strap system for the X-maxx. At that point, almost anything will fit.

    Basically all shitty batts under 3 to high maybe 5min or 11min of runtime just dont cut it! So ya buy more expensive batteries so you get 20 to 30 min run time take brake charge them batts again run other set of high quality batteries, and those proline wheel and tire cut your times in half since so freaking heavy, I have rock & roll 8s xmaxx traxxas 4s 6700mah batts and honestly a good 30min runs bashing and playing around with it.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  Před 3 lety

      The times you see in this video are not typical. Typical driving includes some slow downs, lining up for jumps, things like that. This driving was trying to be as 100% on throttle or on brake as possible. That will obviously suck the batteries down faster than typical running.
      When I go bashing with any of these batteries, they last longer than you see here.
