Common Difficulties in Prayer

  • Sometimes when we have difficulties in prayer, we forget that everyone experiences these difficulties, even religious. Mother Clare joins Fr. Mark-Mary to encourage you to persevere through the dry or dark times in prayer.
No one who prays, not even religious, are strangers to spiritual sloth-those times when the graces of prayerfulness and fidelity just aren’t flowing and prayer just seems like a chore. In these times it’s important to remember that some of the most beautiful truths can only be learned through spiritual desolation. These bland moments in prayer are opportunities to strengthen our spiritual muscles in ways other things couldn’t.
Another helpful tip Mother Clare and Fr. Mark-Mary share is that when there are distractions in prayer, just continue to turn your gaze back to God no matter how often you are distracted. Maybe even bring the distraction to God and ask if he is trying to speak to you through it.
Keep being faithful. Prayer is a gift. Keep on asking for the grace of prayerfulness and fidelity and you will persevere in building a strong relationship with the Lord.

ST.TERESA OF LISIEUX: “I should be distressed that I drop off to sleep during my prayers... But I don’t feel at all distressed. I know that children are just as dear to their parents whether they are asleep or awake, and I know that doctors put their patients to sleep before they operate. I’d never before heard it said that one’s faults did not distress God, and I was overwhelmed with joy when I did receive this assurance. It gave me patience to endure this life of exile. It was, too, the echo of my inmost thoughts. For a long time I had realized that Our Lord was more tender than a mother - and how well I know the depths of tenderness in more than one mother’s heart! I know that a mother is always ready to forgive the misbehavior of her child.”

Fabio Tuan yeah my focus is 100% on The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I stopped praying to saints. I took off my Miraculous Medal that I’ve never taken off for the last 10yrs, it has St. Christopher on it, St. Anthony, and a few others. I took off my crucifix necklace with Jesus’ Body on it. I’m only going to wear a simple cross without Jesus on it. I stopped praying the rosary too.

I pray through the distractions. By focusing on every word of the prayer I keep pulling my mind away from the distraction and deeper into the full meaning of the prayer.
When praying the Rosary I'm constantly thinking about the meaning of each of the mysteries.
Be with Jesus during the agony in the garden. Feel the presence of the decent of the Holy Spirit.
I've grown to love praying the Rosary because it helps me to experience each of these mysteries. A rosary can be said in about 17 minutes, this is a perfect length of time for the human mind to maintain focus.

Discipline is so vital to having a healthy prayer life, and so difficult in our modern society, where we have a slew of constant, virtually nonstop distractions. For example, if one struggles, such as myself, with diligently getting up first thing in the morning to pray, then maybe one (in this instance, ME!!!) shouldn’t keep their cellphone either in their bed, or next to it, as we all know is so common for people today, and not only “millennials”.
With that said, in terms of having a disciplined prayer life, I wholly encourage praying the liturgy of the hours, as much as one reasonably can in their daily life. It truly is “the prayer of the church”, and, while only priests and religious are required to pray it, the church invites all of us to do so, too. While only a small percentage of us are called to the priesthood or religious life, we are all called to foster monastic habits regarding prayer and meditation, to truly foster a monastic heart.

Let her be drawn to the church by your example.
Let it be her decision and something she wants to become.
Perhaps she could help with some charity work and see the joy of sharing and giving, as a part of the church community.
