This Is What It Means to Encounter Jesus

  • An encounter with Jesus is important, but it’s difficult to wrap our head around such an abstract concept. Fr. Mark-Mary suggests we read the story found in Mark 5:21-34 about the hemorrhaging woman, to help us understand what an encounter with Jesus really is.
This woman was an outcast in society. She was considered unclean, and she lived this way for twelve years. Friends she might have known her whole life may have looked at her with eyes of caution. Misled religious leaders may have looked at her with judgment. Doctors may have looked at her with the eyes of despair. Family members may have started to look past her.
Because of all these lies, she probably started thinking of herself as unwanted, a burden, a hopeless cause. But then she hears about Jesus and goes to find him. When she does, she touches his tassel. When Jesus notices that he was touched, the woman apologizes. But Jesus doesn’t chastise her. Instead, his eyes say, “You are known, good, and loved.” He speaks truth to her and calls her daughter.
This is an encounter with Jesus. It reminds us and convicts us of our identity. This is the essence of prayer and reading Scripture. Next time you pray or read Scripture or both, look into Jesus’ face as this woman did, and you will understand how powerful an encounter with Jesus can be.

Thank you my dear Catholic friend. I was raised as a Protestant to believe that Catholicism was not of God. But I see clearly now that you, a Catholic, have a deep love for Jesus and what He came here to communicate to us. You have shown me that Jesus and His mission here on Earth TRANSCENDS the traditions that I was brought up to believe are true. God bless you!!!

I had a similar dream one time that I was at a cocktail party. A party where there were groups of four or five people standing and chatting. I looked across the room and saw Jesus. I positioned myself in back of someone so that they would be blocking his ability to see me because I knew that if he saw me, he would come over and call me out. Alas, He makes a beeline straight toward me. I brace myself for what I had coming to me. Instead, he held out his arms and I fell into them and I have never experienced such a feeling of relief. Best dream ever!!

Thank you Father Mark Mary for this awesome video. I too had an encounter with Jesus. For some time I left the Church and belonged to other faiths. I was on the verge of becoming an athiest when somebody invited me over to Mass. I don't know how to this day, but seeing that piece of bread I saw Jesus. He was there. Simply wanting to welcome me home. I didn't feel judged nor condemned. I mark that day as the beginning of my conversion. I am now and since that day, 20 years ago, a committed Catholic. I feel loved and understood. I may not know a lot of things and I am certainly not nearly perfect, yet I am sure Jesus loves me and little by little he is making me the man he wants me to be.
    God is good.

    Father Mark Mary,
Thank you so much for all that you do.
I am nearly 50 and I am a cradle Catholic who had an encounter with Jesus 8 years ago in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I have decided to follow Jesus and have fallen in love with the Catholic Church again.
We are about to launch the Wild Goose series in the Parish in England and I have been feeling opposition and feeling low. This week I have identified one of the problems.... I have not spent enough time in prayer, on my own with God and His Word. I have neglected the time needed to be able to have an encounter with Jesus and this video has really touched me. My next session with the Confirmation group is on prayer and I am thinking about using your videos, especially this one and follow it with Lectio Divina of the passage.
Jesus, because I have come back to Him again this week and prioritised my time with Him has blessed me beyond any expectation. So, thank you for being part as such a beautiful blessing.
May God carry on blessing you, so you can carry on being a blessing to others.

      @Peachgirl91 Yes and no
I felt Jesus's extreme love and forgiveness. The context was not the same, but I felt like the adulteress to whom Jesus said, 'Go and sin no more'. It was my first 'proper' confession as I had previously been away from tbe Church for years and I gave to Christ all that I could remember fro when I was a child; things I had never confessed and all I felt was Jesus acceptance, mercy and love. All I had to do was change and follow him. Now, i understand what the disciples felt when they met him and left everything because this encounter with his heart, through the priest, compelled me to change the things I needed to change. I was cured from a sin I was locked in. It was a miraculous encounter. As a result of this, I have become more like a disciple. Of course I make mistakes and this is why I run to confession whenever I feel I have hurt God by my behaviour. Not because of hello, but because I have hurt the person who loves me the most.
So, no I did not see Jesus, but yes, it was a supernatural encounter because of its miraculous effect.
It has made me want to learn about my faith as although I am a cradle catholic, it was not important to me,; I now read the bible daily because I want to know God put Father. I have also become active in the Church. The encounter has changes me from having a God on standby when I needed me, to me searching the will of God for my life daily, and wanting people to also have their own encounter with Jesus.

Thank you Father...this really spoke to me and I can do relate to the hemmoraging woman...I have a chronic, untreatable circulatory condition in my legs that causes constant open wounds and bleeding and twice, I developed such bad, unsightly infections that I had to go to the hospital...and both times I picked up MRSA which put me in a quarantine situation..There were some nurse, aides, technicians who had horrified looks and I understand but it does make you feel so alone and almost shunned...But I did experience such beautiful and loving care from most which I know was the Lord! Two incidents stand out..a doctor came to my room and as he was leaving said they would probably being doing an amputation on my leg..I was shocked and began sobbing but my nurse then just came in at the end of her shift and offered to stay with me on her own time..I will never forget that (and thank you God, I still have me leg)! The other was, after weeks in a rehab facility, I was praying on a Sunday morning that I wish I could be at church with Jesus...literally moments later...a wonderful man came to my room and was a Eucharistic minister and he brought me Jesus...I knew Jesus was there! I pray my condition would get better but I trust Jesus' is always with me! God bless you Father and I will pray for you!

A few weeks ago I began praying for all 3 of my children (25, 20, and 14) to find their way "home". I went so far as to pray a binding prayer over each of them over a specific issue for each of them. My middle child told me last week she had downloaded a Bible app on her phone and somehow at the same instance she saw something about reading Romans 8. I immediately felt a small sense of relief that the prayers for my kids are working. This child has been my difficult one, a handful since she was little and very rebellious, always wanting to do her own thing and invariably always having to pay for negative consequences. I see so much of my past in that with her. Anyway, I felt so much joy in knowing she had her own profound experience from scripture. This comes from the same young woman who calls God a woman and in the past has called Him "the make-believe sky wizard".
I will continue to pray for all 3 of my children to come out of the darkness they've lived in with me for so long because as a mom, that is my duty. I will not give up on my family or myself.

Father: I believe you are refering to Matthew 23:9. This is speaking of the word Father in a much different sense than in the sense we call priests father.
Celabicy: First. Priest Celebacy is required in the Latin rite. I can't speak on the other 20something rights(not sure of the exact number)
Second, Priestly Cebacy stems from the practice being called holy in the bible and the understanding of the role of the church.

In all people's need there always seem to be a precense of the Father's Love inside them, in a very easy and gentle way to lead them to Jesus " Listing to him - The Father Spoke - our Precious Lord who makes himself available. “And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live." And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be made well." And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, 'Who touched me?' " And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease."”
    ‭‭Mark‬ ‭5:21-34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Thank you, Father. I did as you suggested and read the passage, and I saw another detail that your discussion helped me notice: in verse 29, after touching His cloak, her flow of blood dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed, but it wasn't until AFTER her encounter with Jesus in verse 33, that He told her, "Go in peace and be cured of your affliction." Wait a minute, she was already cured in verse 29, yet He didn't make His usual statement, "Your faith has made you well." Rather, He told her to "BE healed." So, apparently she needed that personal, direct encounter for Jesus to finalize the healing, and make it permanently hers!

Where did this terminology of “encounter Jesus” come from? Did any saints use it? When I grew up we were encouraged to have devotion to Jesus. I just can’t get used to this way of speaking.

I had a horrible infection in my blood ... I’m surviving I never lost my faith in Jesus and in the hospital I played healing peaceful music and in the hospital my very sick lovely roommate Nancy said thank you ... you have been the best roommate ever... she was so frail and much more ill than I and I prayed God would heal her also. I’m slowly recovering getting my energy back and praying that Nancy made it thru her illness too. I thank the two Priests and Eucharistic minister who visited with me in the hospital ... I am hoping to make it to 5:00 mass today because I haven’t had the energy to go ...

When I read Mark 5: 21-34, I saw a different picture, that is, this bleeding woman knew that Jesus had performed many miracles, so she specifically came just to touch Jesus' clothing to be healed. Jesus made a point to look for her among the crowd, just to have a moment with her to make her feel special and loved. He commanded her for her faith that healed her, but she knew that He was very special and powerful. We at times are very vulnerable, hurt, feeling unwanted, being judged, stressed out, overwhelmed, and yet if we take the time to ask God to come even for a moment, our faith would heal us in many ways to be healthy and to feel peaceful because we are very special and loved as always by God.

What is the Old Testament teaching about a woman in her condition from the Jewish perspective? So that We could see more clearly her experience. She has hope in our Lord and this is what ought to be experienced in absolution. When he sees Us individually we are given a glimpse of heaven. Thank you Father. This is only my humble perspective.

A good meditative Rosary can be prayed 20 to 30 minutes if not a bit longer. Each morning when you wake up, pray in gratitude for at least 15 minutes; then in the evening, at the end of your day, pray in thanksgiving for at least 15 minutes. In doing this, you will achieve through Gods Grace a Holy Hour of Prayer easily. Peace

I was told by a Priest once, giving one tenth of yours is not just money wise, it's got to be one tenth of your time too.. which translates to 2.4 hours... I know it seems long, take it slow n break up your prayer time throughout the day. I am still at 1 hour n 45 minutes.

Please pray for me to release me from Satan and Lucifer. Please pray for me to release me from all demonic soul ties and spiritual contracts. Please pray for my mind, body, soul and spirit to be saved from the evil one and his minions.
Please pray for me because the online evil cult (spiritual awakening teachers, motivational speakers, tarot card readers, energy healers and teachers) had made me feel trauma to awaken myself. They know that I have a astral projection skill. I did not even know I had that ability.
It was too late for me to know that the 4th dimension is a spirit world. It was too late for me to to know that I had a kundalini awakening which was really powered by demons to go through that dimension. Their keywords and titles triggers me to commit sin without even committing any of those sins and their wishes to come true.
They had forced me to do high-level witchcraft to make their wishes and dreams come true. I am afraid that my soul damned in hell for eternity.
