This is a Motromouth couple car review of the new Kia Sportage hybrid compact SUV. The Sportage hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada, but FWD and AWD options are available in the US. For $35,995 CAD this is what you get on the base model, a 12.3” touchscreen with navigation, 4.2” driver display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a power driver seat, heated steering wheel, key-less entry and 17” wheels. The base trim also comes with blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, advanced forward collision avoidance, lane keep assist, lane follow assist and rear parking sensors. We have the top SX trim in Gravity Grey with a red leather interior for $42,695 CAD. It has features like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a smart power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, 12.3” digital driver display, driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, the Harman Kardon sound system and 18” wheels. In the US, there are three trims, the base model for $27,290 USD is standard FWD, AWD is available for $1,800 USD. This trim comes with an 8” touchscreen, a 12.3” driver display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats and a tire repair kit. The middle EX trim for $30,990 USD comes with a 12.3” touchscreen, a heated steering wheel, a power driver seat, wireless charger, blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert and a temporary spare tire. Add the EX Premium package for $1,500 USD to get the panoramic sunroof and smart power tailgate. The top SX Prestige for $36,190 USD has similar features we have on the Canadian top trim. Fuel economy is excellent, 6.1L/100 km, 38 MPG city and 6.3L/100 km, 38 MPG highway. The Sportage hybrid AWD has 8.3” of ground clearance and the FWD model in the US 7.1”. This hybrid can tow 2,000 pounds.

I appreciate Zack's consistent acknowledgement that not every buyer out there has CAD$40,000 to purchase a new vehicle. It's nuts to me how often that number seems to be thrown out there as the _starting_ point of any vehicle.

Interestingly, the larger a channel gets the more it has to consider the statistical axiom that most subs can't (actually) afford most of the vehicles reviewed.. yet the subs are there in the first place to see what's new from OEMs and to dream about what they would buy via a $ windfall. Management of ego bruising your followers vs. maintaining content freshness/appealing to more primal human triggers.

    • @gs98999
      @gs98999 Před rokem +13

I think this channel does a very good job of reviewing cars most people can actually afford. Sure once in a while they have some high end stuff but it’s nice to acknowledge there are people out there that can spend 150k on a car as well and that’s ok.
Then there is the used buyer. These vids 3-4 years from now become a great resource for that research when looking at used cars.

He brought it up so many times that you can tell it’s a very important issue to him. You used to be able to get a lower end German luxury for around $40k. Not anymore. $40k is becoming the new $30k within just a few years.

Another "hit it out of the park" review, thanks so much Andrea and Zack! I love the Couples Car Reviews, you play off each other so well.
And I've said it before but it bears repeating: there's more to a car than value, there's also affordability. And you both never forget that. Thank you!! As a Canadian, I am so thankful for all the info you share that actually pertains to us. So often, we're relegated to US reviews that talk about models and features that are meaningless to us.

The Korean twins are absolutely nailing this segment. This Sportage is a bit too ‘Sporty’ looking for my taste, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Besides, as my Mom always says (that) “its on the inside that counts”, and this is where I feel this KIA shines. Well done them! Thanks for the video.

I did my deposit for a RAV4 Prime SE in May last year, last month my dealer told me the wait is expected to be 18-24 months. I am now looking for alternatives, and I really like the interior of the Kia PHEV - not that much a fan of the angular LED running lights though. My only concern, this will be a vehicle that I expect to be driving for the next 15 years. I believe Toyota might give me this but how about the reliability of the Kia/Hyundai? Andrea did mention her mother driving the Hyundai Tucson PHEV without any issues for 6 months.

I am really liking Kia designs the last couple years. I like both the interior and exterior look of this Sportage. BUT, my biggest concern would be with the turbo engine and especially with putting a turbo engine with a hybrid system. After watching the video about turbo engines on the Car Help Corner channel, I would be wary of the long term reliability of the Sportage and the Tucson Hybrids. It would be great if they came with a NA engine and hybrid combination.
We are still loving our Venza Limited Hybrid and over the first year, we are now averaging 6.3 L/100km.
Thanks for the great video. We always love watching your reviews and seeing the sites around Vancouver. Oh, and like Zach, I'm looking forward to the new Niro Hybrid. Hopefully it will come with a NA engine. A vehicle that would be perfect for my mom.

I think the biggest deal breaker with the Rav4 right now is the wait time. When I was consulting with my local Toyota dealer, the wait time on a Rav4 Hybrid was expected to be anywhere from 1 in a half to 2 year wait. The Tucson and Sportage, I was looking at a 5-8 month waiting period. Still not great, but it made the decision pretty easy. I went with the Tucson, because yes I want those extra features like the 19" wheels. the bigger infotainment system and the Bose speakers. But yeah this Sportage still seems impressive.

Great review folks! Interesting that you compared it to the Venza. I have a 21 Venza Limited and consider the Sportage (Andreas pronunciation) in SX form more upscale, luxurious, having better tech and even better driving than the Venza. Though you trade a little mpg. 41-38 is a trade off worth taking. I’m looking at this same color scheme and model in the US. Cheers

The current owner already put 30K without a single issue. I know Toyota has been doing it for a long time but Hyundai/Kia has been doing it for over 10 years. If Tesla opens it charging network to Hyundai and Hyundai can build EVs fast enough we might see very strong competition between Tesla and Hyundai.

Just to add in with the media/temperature control strip. You can press and hold the climate/media toggle, giving you an option to go back to a specific screen. Let's say you toggle through climate control to adjust the temperature. If you don't touch the panel after a few seconds, it will automatically go back to the media panel.

Always enjoy your reviews. I was considering a Kia Sportage but no matter what color I chose, they only allowed a black interior. I have noticed this on both Hyundai and Kia dealers in northern Iowa. It seems that like Henry Ford, "your can have it in any color, as long as it's black". That is a deal breaker for me.

On that air conditioning /media panel, hold your finger on one of the selections for a few seconds and it allows you to choose a default that it will always go back to very quickly. We have air conditioning / heating as the default. And while I'm driving I control most of the media through the steering wheel by using me mode button and the star button. You can choose what those buttons on the steering wheel do. So I control basically all of my media from the steering wheel - At least 90% of the time.
