Did you know how Henry VIII died?
Opps caught him lacking
What I know of. His health and his leg.
Skin disease?
Diabetes complications due to lack of diagnosis, treatment, and poor dietary habits.
I would imagine renal and heart failure due to diabetes.
It all started with the 44 minute documentary on King Henry and Anne Boleyn. And now I know the entire history of all of King Henry VIII's wives and am no closer to being done with my assignment that is completely unrelated to this.
My too I’m supposed to be reading a book 😂
Never related so much
I can relate!
Hahaaaaa same is the case with me

He had been betrayed so many times? B.S! He betray all of wives and his kids.
Exactly
well katherine howard betrayed her
Yes! He had so many mistresses and also illegitimate children!
Same question. Surely, they can't be serious...🤨
They are seeing it the way HENRY saw it? I don't thinki for one minute they are suggesting that is fact
HE had been betrayed so many times? I take issue with how very sympathetic this is to a man who was, over and over again, cruel and even murderous towards the unfortunate women who had to marry him.
I agree his wife's did not betray him he was a monster don't try and make him look innocent doco makers.
I am hoping they said it that way as from being from his point of view and not sympathizing with him...
I was about to say simp simp simp it’s annoying AF
I completely agree, they should have worded it much better. Like if they want to tell the narrative from his perspective, which is what they were trying to do, they should have added something like “in his mind, he had been betrayed...” instead. He was clearly egotistical and self-absorbed and likely truly believed that these poor women betrayed him.
Everything he did in that time period was actually justified. He never knew the accusations against Anne boleyn were false. I blame the courtiers and councillors who fed him poison over the years of his reign.
Catherine Parr is usually shown as the "only wife" of Henry VIII to survive but actually Anne of Cleves faired much better. After her annulment from Henry Anne negotiated staying in England as his sister, was made rich and had freedom she never dreamed of growing up in a puritanical Protestant court. While Katherine Parr died from childbirth just a few years after Henry's death, Anne lived many happy years until she died of old age at the beginning of Elizabeth I reign.
Anne Cleves died at 42, not really old age and about a year prior to Elizabeth becoming Queen, she died during the reign of Queen Mary i. While she lived well, she never remarried, unlike Catherine Parr, never had children, and while she died of natural causes, was only 42. Catherine of Aragon, the only wife older than Henry, by 6 years, had the longest life, passing at 50, it was just she being older died before Henry did, but then again being the Aunt of the most powerful ruler from the most powerful family in Europe, the Hapsburg King of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, she could not be harmed, at least physically.
That was considered old age back in those times.
Anne of Cleves def. came out better than all the others
Until henry’s son took all her land and money back
She didn’t survive being married to him though…she was gone in months!
I always find it funny how Kateryn Parr is always referred to as the one who survived when Anna of Kleve outlived her by a lot 😂
I know!
Referred to have outlived Henry as the King and married. Catherine Parr as the legal wife and regent.
rainbow_ltd yeah I know what they mean, I just find it a little funny
To be fair, being divorced meant loosing access to your children and most likely having to leave england or at least leave vast sways of wealth with people disgusted at you. Being his widow made much more sympathy
Katherine Parr died a year after Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves lived much longer than both. I believe she's the was the better for it.
She knew to keep her mouth shut and how to avoid updating Henrys ego . She was smart acting like he "knew best". I'm betting she was relieved when he croaked.
Imagine being such a disgusting narcicist.
I like "I bet she was relieved when he croaked"😆
So are we really blaming her for having an opinion. This man was clearly a narcissist psychopath who wanted to own the woman around him
No, we are admiring her for being a pragamatist. You really need to get past page one of the Book Of Life.
He wouldn't fit at all in the this century
@@amber-jg5jv Some historians reckon that nowadays Henry's "wooing" of Anne Boleyn would be considered harassment.
He owned them 🤣😂
Actually, Anne of Cleves lived even longer
Yeah but the rhyme is divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. It's about their relationships with Henry. So, "survived, but not as long as Anne of Cleves" doesn't fit and doesn't make sense in the context of the ending of her relationship with Henry. Also, technically Catherine of Aragon LIVED the longest of all the queens. Anne just died later in the century.
Well, technically they’re all dead

I used to live in Catherine Parrs cottage where the laundry was done in those days. It was haunted so got out as soon as a could. A lot of evil energy in that house.
oo
There are no ghosts
It must have been the Henry's ghost if it was evil.
I think Katherine Part had the experience and maturity of Katharine of Aragon, the intelligence and spirit of Anne Boleyn but the common sense of Anne of Clever and the observation tactics of Jane Seymour. Her debated with the King were her slipping into Anne Boleyn territory, and she used her intelligence to get out of it and become a Jane Seymour type wife.
Interesting. This documentary skips a rather well known story that Gardiner persuaded Henry to issue a warrant for the arrest of the Queen. However, it was dropped (by design or accident), and a loyal supporter of Catherine’s gave it to her. She was very distressed, and Henry heard her, went to her and comforted her. The next day Catherine and he had the chat, in which he tests her. After they made up Gardiner arrived to arrest the Queen, but was hunted away by Henry calling him a knave. (Mind you I have always wondered why Gardiner tried to go thru with the arrest when the warrant had been lost, and he saw Henry being friendly with the Queen).
There is some speculation, that Henry engineered the whole incident to teach Catherine a lesson.
That and Catherine pleaded her case directly to her husband, saying she only wanted to learn from him or something like that. She was really quite clever and knew how to survive.
Tsukabu's Artsy Things Very true. Sensible woman
The king told them to:

It’s literally my favourite part of Catherine Parr’s story!
Yeah I wondered about that and she told her ladies in waiting to get rid of all forbidden books before she went to see Henry. Catherine Parr was only able to freely practice her faith after his death.
She never needed his love but married him because that is what she was expected to do.

Oh, how i love being a tudor lover.
Bishop Gardiner was bad news . He lasted too long .He nearly had Elizabeth beheaded when Mary as queen was very sick .
The clergy were spies. They instituted confessionals for that purpose. They wanted to know what was going on so they pressed for info in the confessionals. Simply a bunch of spies. Well documented.
How did Anne Bolyen betray him or his first wife? He betrayed himself.
exactly. he's the one who betrayed everyone. none of the wives betrayed him, especially not his beautiful first wife
I think I have heard, that Anne Bolyen wanted to sleep with her brother, since she wanted a son-a heir to the throne- (and Henry didn't wanted to sleep with her anymore, cause he wanted to devorce her and was searching for a reason to do so) but the wife of the brother told Henry everything, so he had finally a reason-also in the eyes of the nation- to get her divorced or even better beheaded...
@@student05-bdes52 yes some of his wives didn't betray him but Catherine Howard definitely did and his helper that slept with her.( I'm not gonna add Anne Boleyn to the list because whether she was guilty or not is based on people's perspective)

Apparently he died of syphilis. But if this were the case, he would have passed it on to his children. Edward died at a young age. And we don't know of offspring conceived by him after Jane Seymour. Both Mary and Elizabeth were robust.
Wow, y'all are being awfully mean and unfair to Catherine Howard's memory, I beseech ye' give this dead young woman a break.😑

@@Zeldarw104 You have a gorgeous name. I also agree, Catherine Howard wasn’t raised to be a queen. Men and women were tutored for the roles expected of them.
In his mind he was the one betrayed.
Early incel lol
Such an underrated character. Even Catherine Howard has more fans even though she's only a child with no interesting attributes. Catherine Parr on the other hand is an amazing woman. I never understood why she's not admired like Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, or Jane Seymour. She is intelligent and has a political figure just like Catherine. She shares similar values to Anne. And she acts obedient to keep her head just as Jane did. She's the combination of all the women Henry ever loved. I think he chose her as his final five because he felt guilty for all the things he did to his past wives. He made amends by marrying Catherine Parr. Also, it is known that Catherine of Aragon was the godmother of Catherine Parr and Parr was named after her. The connection between them and the fact that their character is so similar may indicate that Henry went through all those wives just to end up with one just like CoA. I think he considered CoA as his one true love and loved her more than anyone else.
Agree with all
She was my fav step-mum ❤️
I’m sorry but no woman in their right mind would want to be Henry VIII Queen. I’d have fled.
Sarah James me, too.
Most of them were forced into it, remember he was King.
If you refused you could be executed, it could be considered treasonous.
You'd be killed either way😒
When he was looking for a new wife a foreign princess let it be known that she would accept if she had two heads.
Anne of Cleves survived him too, even if she was just a private person with a lot of money
Just saying
She also outlived Catherine Parr by around 10 years.
a lottt of money 😂😂 including 3 castles. and she was the one queen who escaped having to sleep with him
she was no longer queen.... just saying
the survived current queen, not ex queen or wife
@@brigadeunknown1324 Right. While she was the surviving Queen she was not a Dowager as she was not related to King Edward VI.
I like to think that Anne and Katherine would've got on quite well. Not only because they were both Reformists but also because of how much Katherine cared for Elizabeth.
Catherine is known as the one who survived but she actually died a year after Henry and Anne Of Cleves outlived her 😂
Its because Henry died married to her, Anne was divorced so she didn't technical "survived",, Catherine was "survivor" because she wasn't divorced, beheaded or died of natural causes (birth like Jane)
Catherine Parr was the one who survived according to the rhyme, but it was Anne of Cleeves who was the ultimate survivor since she lived long enough to see Mary rise to the throne and died popular and well-respected.
Just found out Catherine Parr is something like my 11th Great Grandmother so now I’m intrigued! Never been one for history until now.
She had no surviving issue…
Queen of Aragon was his true love, 24 years and she put up with so much.
Catherine really should have kept her mouth shut. Henry only started the reformation to marry Anne Boleyn. He was always a Catholic and died clutching his Catholic rosary. Didn't Catherine realize that he was a staunch Catholic??? She was extremely lucky to have kept her head. Gardiner was SUCH a snake!!!
Thank you so much for this!!! I am a total history nut but have always been fascinated by the Tudor history
I like to think that Catherine of Aragon was his true and forever love. I reckon he became consumed by having a male heir, but if her son's had lived, I believe she would have remained queen permanently. Yes he had mistresses etc, but I do feel like he continued to look for her in each wife he took. Her not giving him a male heir was the only reason he had her removed - and not even killed. He did not even plot to have her killed somehow. He never had a son to truly succeed him as heir - the daughter of Catherine and Henry, Mary, was the ultimate heir after his death (and then the death of Edward). If he had perhaps accepted Mary as his heir and reformed to a woman ruling, rather than try to reform the entire church etc, things may have been better for him. I believe he lived with regret for the rest of his life in missing Catherine of Aragon 💜 just how I'd like to see it 🙂
I disagree to some extent.
I believe that her true love was the one she married before. There just wasn’t enough time for them.
I still show more sympathy for his first wife. (Katherine of Aragon) She was the real one true wife to him. She loved and was still truly in love with him. He doesnt deserve anything from anyone. Not even love from his people, or any from every one of his wives.... Bet his own court was happy he was gone. They could breathe a little. Til the next tyrant came on the throne. His daughter Mary, I know a Elizabeth had a temper also. But I rather have her as my queen than Mary.. I dont haven issue with catholic religion. just the people like Mary that make it seem as pure evil... like any other religion out there.
I would have thought the items of which belonging to the queen Catherine parr you just showed us would be more handled with care using gloves since they a piece of England history
Absolutely!!
I thought the same thing 🤔
Books are not handled with gloves because it’s much easier to tear something by accident. Clean and dry hands are usually enough.
I've got no choice
With the king I stay alive
Never had a choice
Been a wife twice before, just to survive
I don't have a choice
If Henry says "it's you", then it's you
No matter how I feel
It's what I have to do
But if, somehow, I had that choice
No holding back, I'd raise my voice
I'd say "Henry, yeah it's true
I'll never belong to you
'Cause I am not your toy, to enjoy till there's something new
As if I'm gonna give up my boy, my work, my dreams
To care for you"
"Ha, darling, get a clue
There's nothing you can do
I don't need your love, no, no
No, I don't need your love, no, no
There's nothing left to discuss, no, no
But I don't need your love, no, no"💙
But I can’t say that Not to the king. So this is goodbye all of love Catherine
Do not romantise a man like him . He was a horrible person . And true love was never a part of his dictionary.
Great analysis!
What about Anne of Cleves, who survived on account of wit? There are suggestions that he was already “looking suspiciously” at Catherine Parr too, when he died.
When I saw that actor who played Thomas Seymour I thought the narrator was going to say she fell in love with Galileo. (0:18)
Anne of Cleces know her equally well as Chatrine Phar...she know how to survive and went along with divorce, and lived even longer then her...

@@aleasyah3032 yes, ur right
But did he ??
He didn't behead anyone the courts did right or wrong, Anne and Katherine ware found guilty by a court of crimes. By players of the total court games. Henry asked for an exit strategy n that's what was given. Far easier than divorce.
How punishment was issued was as per the times standard.
I’m sure Henry “commanded” other ladies for marriage, but they all turned him down, because they wanted to keep their heads!
I am surprised it is possible to touch such an ancient book without gloves or protection.
She survived because he die first!🤣🤣🤣🙈
History is so intriguing.
In Game of Thrones, the game ends when the character sits on the throne.
In real life... Those who sit on the throne have to keep playing.
“She could have said no, but that would have been unthinkable. A proposal from the king is like a royal command” - but it’s fine because when Anne Boleyn said no we are just going to say she was playing hardball and wanted the crown 🤣
Anne refused to be a mistress! Katherine was offered marriage!
There's no evidence that Anne or her family plotted for her to become queen, plus Henry had just ended an affair with her older sister. Sleeping with your sister's ex was just as distasteful back then as it is now. There's also an account of Thomas Seymour by Eustace Chapyus trying to dissuade Henry from marrying his daughter.

She survived him because he died first
Why all the hatred for Henry, 3 of his wives survived their marriage, only 2 were beheaded and 1 died in childbirth.....that not too bad is it?
BTW, I'm joking.
I thought that Katharine of Aragon’s dowry was so great that Henry VII was loathe to lose such a large sum.
he loved him a kathrine innit😅🤷🏾♀️
I wish this video went on to explain what happened after Henry died. Did her life end too?
No. She was the Queen Consort so she had some titles. However, she was not the Dowager, which implies the new monarch's mother, as she was not the mother of Edward VI, and though she was his step-mother, the Regents quickly took control of Edward as he was only 9,, and Catherine did not have any power over him. She did take into her home Elizabeth who was 13, Mary was 30 so she lived elsewhere. However, she quickly took up a relationship with Thomas Seymour and was remarried within a year. Within a few months she was pregnant, first time, and died as a result of childbirth, she was 36, about 21 month's after Henry died.
Why did any of his queens think they had the power and influence to change or alter any part of religion - or law? Did they think becoming queen would give them special license? That the king would go along with them? Didn't they take note of Anne Boleyn's downfall and learn to keep quiet and their opinions to themselves.....? At least as long as the king lived.....
Anne was executed primarily because she hadn't given Henry a son and their passion had died out, not because of her reformist ideas. He wanted to start fresh with another wife after the deaths of both Catherine of Aragon and Anne.
Katherine parr didnt last long after henrys death as she went back thomas seymour ….and died of child bed fever 1548 buried at sudeley castle

Those books, are they not the original ones that catherine had? Im just wondering why shes not wearing gloves while handling them 🤷🏻♀️
Wearing cotton gloves to hold or turn the pages of a book or manuscript actually reduces manual dexterity, and increases the likelihood of causing damage. Gloves also have a tendency to transfer dirt to the object being consulted, and to dislodge pigments or inks from the surface of pages.

Katherine probably experienced an evangelical conversion during the last 18 months of Henry’s reign as demonstrated by her book The Lamentations of a Sinner. She did not wish for further the Reformation when she first married Henry.
He died and what happened to Catherine Parr afterwards? That is another episode, hopefully.
While her life was not that interesting afterwards, she only lived another 21 months, it did have a major impact as she took in Elizabeth and her next husband kept abusing her which created Elizabeth's distrust for men, thus why she never married, at least that is what a lot of historians feel feel.
