How to Do a T-Test for Beginners

  • In this tutorial, I explain how to perform a t-test on Microsoft Excel 2013. If you are using the freeware Google Sheets, then most of this still applies. The test is really easy to calculate, but understanding the meaning and uses can be frustrating. In this tutorial, I try to explain this with different examples and trying to not get too technical for beginners. Remember, you want a minimum of 10 samples (n=10) for each group of data in order to develop a reasonable bell curve for the t-test to evaluate. Anything less than n=10 does not give us a reasonably accurate calculation. However, the more samples, the better!

This is how statistics should be taught! How I wish he was my teacher back in school...but it's never too late and I learned a lot just from this while I use Excel extensively for various analytics. The reason why he can explain this so beautifully and simply is because he gets it! Opposite is true for those lectures where we're lost/confused.

This was very good - clear, informative. I just mention that in the grasshopper example the difference in the shapes of the distributions makes it "suspicious" that there might be a statistically significant difference, after all. And 0,08 is not much above the critical level as the lecturer said. One should claim then that "there seems to be a tendency, it is a strong hypotheses, we need more data to make it sure". So, yes, 0,05 value is the limit of certainty but there might be a "grey zone" above this. It might be too simplified to conclude that "it was not significant" and that is that. One might do only this if there is no time or space for more (say, in a school test). But these "close" results might also be mentioned (in some studies) - formulated cautiously, not to mislead the readers. (It is sad that sometimes journalists abuse such "half-baked" uncertain results. And I have already seen an example where a journalist multiplied three "mays" by four "mights" and concluded that the result is "it is certainly so".)
