Casio G-Shock GW2310 In-Depth Review

  • Here's a relatively inexpensive G-Shock which is packed with my favorite features. It has Casio's Tough Solar power source, which means that there's a solar cell in the face of the watch to keep the battery automatically charged when you use it in everyday lighting conditions. It has Casio's Multiband 6 atomic time reception built in. So you could potentially wear this watch for many, many years without having to change a battery nor adjust the time (unless you go to a different time zone).
    I should mention that I've been considering buying this watch for several months but I thought that, perhaps, it wasn't a very good-looking watch in the official product photos online. I'm pleased to report that, in person, the watch looks just fine. The LCD display is very easy to read and the automatic backlight makes the screen look bright and clear in the dark.
    There are other variations of this watch with the same module but with different color combinations on the outside. Those others all cost more than the one featured in this video. Also, the G2310 is a close relative of this watch but it does not have the Multiband 6 atomic time reception feature. So if that's an important feature then be sure to look carefully before you might accidentally mistake the G2310 for this GW2310. They look very similar! This watch uses Casio's module 3195. Detailed instructions are available for download from Casio's website.

    I had mine for 13 years also, I gave it to my father-in-law. He’s been wearing it for the last year and a half and I bought a new one. I have watches worth thousands of dollars but I still grab this one every day because it does everything without question and I never have to think about it. Not to mention it’s indestructible, the perfect tool.!

    I've had a GW-2310 for years. It usually receives a time signal from WWVB in Colorado at night here in California, though in April 2024 the Colorado signal has weakened due to antenna wind damage that will be repaired by about the end of June. These very low frequency signals are weak and best received at night. This watch is on the large side but very lightweight due to the resin construction. With 9 years of use the battery is still going though it seems to take more light to charge than my other solar watches. Recently tried one of the inexpensive LED solar watch 'chargers' and that really gets the battery full. Rugged, lightweight, large, accurate and easy to read with many features, a great watch for action or activities that put other watches at risk.

    Your content is the Casio / G-Shock equivalent of listening to Bob Ross in The Joy of Painting. Relaxing, informative, and wholesome. Keep up the good work. Hopefully you’ll treat yourself to a GMW-B5000 soon ... you’ll not regret it. However, even though my wife likes my GST-W110D, and likes my Rolex, she claims that the GMW is distastefully ‘blingy’. Not to worry.

    I love this watch. I use it to gauge and set my other watches. Only 2 problems are 1) I live in NJ. I had to find the "sweet spot" in my house and orient the watch in the right direction to catch an AT signal. 2) I have the FB-1/stealth version. In certain lighting the watch can be hard (but never impossible) to read. Turning on the A EL function fixes this completely though.

    Got mine a few days ago through AMZN as "used" with a medium scratch on the band. Upon arrival the only damage was to the packaging. Watch brand new. All papers accounted for. Screen, however, was blank. Pushing buttons did nothing. 5 mins in the sun and the screen came to life with gauge reading "charging". No adjustments are possible under this condition. After approximately 75 mins in the sun, the gauge read medium permitting mode adjustments and set up. Multi band 6 kicked in at 0004. Watch set to "LAX" and Auto reception. I'm in San Mateo CA 625 miles away from Fort Collins CO. Amazing. After several days of continuous wearing (4 days, actually), the gauge moved to high. Watch is tough. My back up is a GW 5610-1, purchased 2 years ago, which is a tremendous watch in my view. Band shows minimal wear and Multi Band 6 kicks in regularly. The GW-2310 is my every day carry. Very happy. Oh, AMZN used price out the door was $74 for this "used" GW-2310.

    I've had the FB version for about 6 yrs and love it. Only short comings, I wouldn't even call complaints. As a lot of people say on the FB model it can be difficult to read at times, but can always be read. And for the very cool/stealthy look of the FB I can easily live with it. I'm in NJ/North East coast USA. The radio reception sux. I had to find the sweet spot in the house and face the antenna/6 o'clock position west to get a signal, but like that it is consistent, but only gets L1. I did however find an app ($2.00 US) called Clock Wave where your cell phone gets the signal and repeats it to the watch. Using that I get an L3 signal any time, day or night on both my radio watches AT watches (Casio and Citizen). Bottom line is its a great watch at a very good price for a Solar/AT watch

    Great review and so much easier than trying to follow the tiny manual that comes with the watch! One feature I really like is the recessed face crystal. Being my everyday watch, I don't worry about scratching the face. "Tough" is a great description. I got this one because I lost / misplaced my last Casio watch. It's so frustrating not knowing what happened to it. Now all I need is a watch (a real watch, not an Apple watch) that I can track with my phone / computer. Does such a watch exist? BTW, I'm not in the habit of losing watches. 🙂

One Question: The back of the watch says GW2310-1. The written instructions I received with the watch (which I haven't read) says, Model # 3195. Do I have the wrong instructions or does this watch have a different model number in different countries?

  • @skzion2
    @skzion2 Před 2 lety

    The price has gone up about $25.
    The best thing about this watch is its solar charging. Resin watches lose their watertight seal when opened. In theory, a good enough watch tech could avoid this, but that will be much more expensive than $10.
    This would not be close to my first watch, but it would be a great travel watch if going to any place with elevated crime. They also work well while diving if you make sure that no buttons are pushed under water. While dive computers have replaced dive watches, it's not crazy to have a backup, maybe set to show running minutes. Also, to avoid losing a watch, it's best to keep it on the wrist. You need not remove this to protect it.
    Finally, lots of watch enthusiasts have a G-Shock. It is the ultimate tool watch.

      Yes. The Multiband 6 feature will receive atomic time to keep this watch updated to the correct time, right down to the second. In areas where Multiband 6 reception is not possible then it runs as a regular quarts watch, accurate to within 15 seconds per month.

  • @thomaslinton1001

    Curious that after two hours I cannot find anyone to say the "atomic clock" feature works where I am just east of Cleveland, Ohio. I get "most of the U.S.," but that smacks of "one size fits most."

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  Před 3 lety

      There are several things which can interfere with radio reception, so the people who make and sell these watches are reluctant to guarantee that reception will work anywhere. Personally, I’m just about 350 miles from the WWVB transmitter in Colorado so reception is good all day and night. Others who live in places like Florida and New England tell me they have good reception overnight on a consistent basis. So these should work for you in Cleveland. If not, there may be things in your immediate area which are interfering with reception. Something as small and simple as a wireless charger for a mobile phone can emit a strong electromagnetic field, for example. I have another video in which I discuss radio reception problems and possible solutions.

    I got my watch like this last week and it’s amazing except I can’t connect to the AC at all. Indoors, outdoors, near windows...nowhere. It tries, them I get “ERR” on the screen. Any suggestions?

I live in central IL. Where are you from? Because you have to be within 600 miles of Fort Collins Colorado which is where the USA signal tower is located and sent from. I think that’s my issue anyway. If you look in manual it has a map showing u were all the towers are that put off the signal and I’m just out of range BARELY

    So any metal framed, stucco-covered, or aluminum-sided building is a Faraday Cage, blocking Multi-Band 6. Not to mention electrical wiring so often found in walls. Sounds like Multi Band 6 is an often-useless. "If" is a poor basis to spend one's money.

    "will receive atomic time information from any of those six atomic time transmitters." As it happens, that is not correct for me on my property east of Cleveland. My watch will NOT receive atomic time information from ANY of those six atomic time transmitters - not even outside my house with .5 miles of pasture to the west.

    They will close the tower in US as the rumors say. It is an outdated technology for verification of the time in comparison to Bluetooth technology (as good as your phone is - buggy from time to time, till the next restart/update). Even (if) it works, you should spread your magic carpet and wait on it praying for 10 minutes in order to receive the signal with enough strength to do the job. Too much external interference that disrupt the signal. Anyway in eastern Europe there is not an effective tower signal as is in many other parts of the world too but the prices of this kind of watches are much higher despite 6 multi band is gimmicky/not functional.

      "Also, did you ever hear of people in Europe having trouble with Atomic Watches?"
      Yes. This is way I've specified Eastern Europe. The effective range of the Frankfurt tower is about 1500 km (in ideal conditions - no interference from other buildings, signals, transmitters and so on). BG and Greece are on the border/beyond the effective range. Friend of main has G-Shock GW-M5610-1ER. His watch does not receive the signal. This correlates well with the above-mentioned data. A related map is posted below.
