Casio G-Shock GW6900 In-Depth Review

- The GW6900 is based on the classic design of the DW6900 which was first available in 1995. Both the DW6900 and the GW6900 are still available new in many color varieties. I prefer the newer GW6900 because it has Casio's "Tough Solar" power source and Multiband 6. Tough Solar means that there's a solar cell in the face of the watch to keep the battery (or capacitor) continually charged. Multiband 6 means the watch has a built-in radio receiver to keep the watch accurate. If the watch is used in areas where atomic time reception is available (from 6 major transmitters in different parts of the northern hemisphere) then it can update its time automatically every night. You could potentially wear this watch for many, many years without having to change a battery nor adjust the time (unless you go to a different time zone).
The GW6900 watch featured in this video uses Casio's Module 3179. Detailed instructions are available for download from Casio's website. (The non-solar, non-Multiband 6 version uses module 3230.) - Věda a technologie
I find these g shock videos so relaxing...
I absolutely love my GW 6900.
The quality is top shelf.
It's almost perfect.
I find this watch to be a lot more attractive than the standard square design. Thanks for the in-depth review!
I just bought this watch. This tutorial was 100% thorough.I greatly appreciate it.
Greg, the community so appreciates you and the level of detail that you put into all your videos!
I have to say that the GW6900 is one of my favorite G-Shocks.
My only nitpicks are that I wish it could display the regular time while you are in the other modes like Timer & StopWatch.
Adding a multilanguage feature like in the GW5610u would be nice.
Otherwise is still a very complete watch with many functions & its very reliable.
As I research this model for my collection, I believe the non solar power version does all that.
@@albert333poolcorrect. But then it doesn’t have world time either :(
I picked this watch up about a week ago. This video is very helpful.
GW=Global Waveceptor
Thanks for the informative (and even somewhat entertaining) videos. And the knitting needle/pointer really works well for these small, detailed tutorials.
Thank you. I think I've used a wooden skewer sometimes too, but the knitting needle just happened to be close when I decided to start making my recent videos. Much better than just using my fingers (which sometimes happens anyway). Sometimes I watch these videos on my big TV at home and then, of course, it's easy to see the details. But I like to use a pointer just to be sure folks know what I'm talking about (especially if they're watching CZcams on a small smart phone screen).
Thanks Greg. Another very good video. I appreciate your hard work. I own this watch and learned how to use it from your video.
I have this watch and I love it. This was the best watch review and instructional video ever. Thank you for your time!
Excellent review and instruction I just got mine tonight and this helped with my setup..Thank you!
Ive rocked this exact watch for almost a decade i just finally put a new band on it. This watch is excellent.
good review ive had this same watch for the last 10 years works solidly
I like the ability to display the 2nd time zone at the same time as the local time zone. It would be nice if they included this ability in the squares too.
Yes, it's nice to see both time zones at once. The more I think about it, that's the whole point of monitoring a different time zone!
@@GoodTimekeeper Looks like the 3459/3461 module shows you local time in the small box when viewing world time. I guess I'll just have to wait for a positive display plastic-cased square to be released with this module.
Excellent review Mr Anderson.
Thank you very much.
Awesome vid as usual. One of my favorite channels. As always looking forward to your next vid 👍
Thank you. I look forward to making the next one!
I own this watch and this video helped me adjust the time , n other settings. thank you
very good information, I just ordered one after seeing this video
the DW 6900 I had for 6 years was too basic compared to this GW which I´m hoping to be getting soon - excellent presentation, the best I've seen about this watch
I own 11 different variations of the 6900. Has it all. It and the 5600 will always rule the G world for me. Cool video...thanks!
Okay I need to get this watch.. So freaking cool!
Great video, thanks Greg.
Another fantastic video, thanks!
Nice review👍 I dabbed my permanent black Sharpie into the recessed text on the rubber case for a case blackout look. I think it looks a bit more professional without white lettering all over the case.
My first G-Shock (and first Tough Solar) was the MTG-900 in 2006 too. Has worked flawlessly to this day. My G-Shock addiction started there….
I've been using this watch for over 10 years. Its resilient, reliable and useful.
Can you help me? I bought GW6900 and I want to make sure it isn't fake. How can I do that?
@W Jack I bought it online from Walmart. It was about $80
@W Jack I was in doubt because it isn't made in Japan. But I watched some video and I'm sure that it is real. I like this watch. I wanted something simple and durable. Thank you.
Hey thanks great guy set mine up watching your video awesome watch thank you for sharing 👍
I like your video . Because it’s Simple and straight to the point. . Very professional. Keep it up 👍🏻
Very knowledgeable on casio g shock watches
Wow awesome video!
I love my GW-6900B-1JF.
Traded for it cheap not knowing what I got, it's a potential game changer.
Price has gone up since Greg's MSRP mention at the end of the video.
Awesome video sir, thanks again
Well explained. Thanks.
So Good G-Shock
Thanks for your wonderful video
Nice review.
I don't know if you mentioned but this watch sits fairly wide on the wrist due to the arching of the straps... I found out later that the strap makes the watch wear MUCH larger than it actually is. This can be "fixed" by either modding the original strap, or just using a gw/dw5600 strap instead.
I also appreciate that the buttons are MUCH easier to operate than the 5600/5610 series.
Thank you for this comment, I was wondering what other straps fit as I am having the same problem!!
Great video.
Late to the game here by GW might mean Global Watch. But G Wow is better! Thank you for the review! It helped a lot!!
Always love the G-shock classic designs. Can you help me choose between this and GW2310? I have smaller wrist and currently wearing a GW B5600.
Way to go Greg!
Thank you. Watches are fun.
I like the simplicity and the colours on the dw6900
Mine showed Error when I tried manual synch , although the signal strength is L3
the strap on this one is so much nicer than the DW6900. and the digits are larger and easier to read, day is 3 letter instead of 2, and it's a little thinner than the DW
It’s true. 👍👍👍👍
Too bad no time display while in timer and stopwatch modes
SUPER... THANKS
Great watch. I find my self wearing a GW6900 or a GW9400 1B more than any other watch.
How does the GW9400 1B compare in size to the GW6900 ?
@@Darofla A bit larger. Still as comfortable.
@@dltraining6044 Thanks. Now I have to try one I think.
@@Darofla Take a look at one in person. I am getting older and gave the negative display to my younger brother. I bought a regular display GW9400 this afternoon.
i love my 5610gwm with gw500 strap so much!!!!!
I’ve had my eyes on this one for a while. Have to check if Thailand is in range of the CHN or JPN transmitters.
I wonder: are there any G-Shock models that have a DD/MM date format?
Thank you.
Yes, I have some which will allow you to display the date in MM/DD or DD/MM format. One is a Gravity Master GRB-100. It doesn’t have atomic time reception from the Multiband 6 transmitters but, instead, it gets time updates through Bluetooth with the Casio Connected app for Android and Apple iOS devices.
czcams.com/video/dJES-X8UJmo/video.html
There’s also the G-Shock GWB5600. This uses the Bluetooth connection and it also has a Multiband 6 receiver... so you have both options for time updates.
czcams.com/video/l8AM_CxSx84/video.html
The “Budget Waveceptors” also allow you to display MM/DD or DD/MM date formats. They are not G-Shock watches but they are also available at a lower price than those other G-Shocks. The WV200 model is almost like a G-Shock with a 200 Meter water resistant case. And it’s available with either a resin or metal watch band/bracelet.

Greg Anderson - The Good Timekeeper Thank you. Much appreciated. :)
The GST-B200 has that function via the Bluetooth connection.
Are the buttons supposed to be so difficult to push? I almost have to use my nails! The outer casing gets in the way of my fingers, and my fingers aren't chunky.
Dw. Digital watch
Gw. Good watch
Greg, love your videos very informative. Just got a GW6900 from Amazon used like new and I get an ERROR when trying it to receive Multi Band 6. What can I do?
I tried to receive it manually like you suggested in the video but it didn’t work.
Hey man, I am guessing you could have figured it by now, but let me give you some hints. First, I would suggest that every night you try leaving it in front of a different window, with the theoretical 12 dial pointing to the window. If this doesn't work, you can dl some apps on your phone that would allow you to sync it that way. For android I am using "radio watch sync". After the first sync I did with the app, it afterwards started receiving normally signal near 2 specific windows of my house.
Hope this helps!

I was looking at used DW6900 watches, and I was shocked to so the prices. Makes sense to just get a new DW6900 or a GW6900.
DW: Digital, Water resistant
GW: G-Shock, Waveceptor
Thank you. It's a little confusing when "W" stands for something different depending on which watch it is.
What is waveceptor
Hey Greg good to see you Greg yeah buddy I love this watch I love the steel buttons on it I don't like this plastic buttons I like the real metal
Awesome video!! Can you turn off the radio receiving on this watch??
Yes.
Press the lower right button once. The display should read "GET" with the date and time of the latest succesfull sync attempt. Then press and hold the upper left button. A beep should sound and than you can set it to ON/OFF with the lower right button.
How long does it take to charge the watch to full capacity and how much time does it take to take it to zero battery from mid level battery
According to Casio if it’s fully charged it can go for 9 months even without a significant recharge. As for charging it from a completely drained battery, there’s a chart in the manual for this module 3179. It shows that you can go from nothing to a medium charge with three hours of direct sunlight. It could take up to 26 total hours to get to a full charge and different times depending on the lighting conditions. But if you can get it to a medium charge then it’s fully functional and then just wearing it often should keep it running well. It’s not recommended to leave it in the dark for extended periods.
Thank you sir. :)
Thank you Sir. Can you do a review on the differences between the DW6900 vs GW6900. I dont know which one to get. Thanks
Gw6900 has multi band 6 I think that alone should sway your decision.
The DW is fairly basic but has tons of different colors and the three "eyes" are all used to track seconds. I think it comes with fewer alarms and you can't do the dual time zone thing if I remember correctly.
The the GW only comes in the shown color but adds some useful features like solar power and atomic sync among other smaller changes. The 3 eyes are used as a dash board to display charge levels, setting and seconds. This is the one I own and it's been great and never let me down.
Hope this helps!
@@someamateur2853 The black version is the most common but I have owned a yellow version and there's also a white version. I've sold the yellow one for 3 times the original price as I didn't care because I am a user, not a collector. The yellow and white version are very scarce and sought after by G-Shock collectors.
Hi. How can I determine if my GW6900 is real or fake? I bought it online from Walmart. It was about $80.
Walmart doesn’t sell fakes plus $80 is the typical price tag, so just assume it’s real.
Can anyone tell me where i can order this in Germany/with shipping to Germany for a decent price?
It is hard to find in Europe. On Ebay they want too much money for the watch (€360,-). I found a new one in Japan for €150,- including import taxes (NL). I used buyee.
I’m debating between getting this or GWM5610-1. Which is the better watch?
It's all subjective.
@Sauli Luolajan-Mikkola I picked the same one. I like that design better.
gw 6900 i like all the clutter on the screen@@7324edwin
I have both. And the 5000u. If the light is primary concern of yours, go gw6900 or 5610-1.
And imo the 6900 5th button is Much easier to push. And the EL light is much better than the led on the 5610u and 5000u.
For wearability, 5000 and 5610u and 5610 -1 are more comfortable for me.
I don't understand Casios obsession with the 6900 and 5600 series while so many others series are neglected and discontinued. Like GW9000 for example...
It is a puzzle sometimes. I haven’t been able to warm up to the negative LCD watches but Casio sure seems to produce lots of those. I suppose that the 5600 and 6900 series are the most familiar iconic G-Shocks and they’ll probably never stop making some version of those.
And the GD350..
I need help, I can not figure out how to change the day, my watch is one day ahead of the actual day. Please help!!
I have two GShock models that were both set to Tokyo, and was a day ahead. Once I set the correct time zone everything was fixed.

Also try a time machine 😉
GW: G-Shock Wavecepter
I wonder why Japan has two transmitters considering it is such a small country. And America has only one considering is such a big country
I guess it’s just a way to have redundancy and make sure there’s plenty of coverage despite natural and man-made obstacles. There’s a cool article on Wikipedia. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JJY. Also, I think WWVB transmits using a lot of power.

Do you have to replace the battery after a few years?
The battery won’t last forever but Casio is now starting to say that it should last at least 10 years. My oldest Tough Solar watch is going on 15 years since I bought it and I have never changed the battery.
@@GoodTimekeeper
Ok thanks greg
MrJuggernaut, Yes after 30 years The tough solar rechargeable lithium battery will have to be replaced after 30 years of normal usage if not exposed to excessive darkness during the daytime hours.
@@GoodTimekeeper The ML-xxxx battery is not easy to procure, and that AFAIK replacement has to be carried out at an authorized facility...
With Tough Solar system the power management is very tricky. If the timepiece concerned is to be subjected to prolonged cold storage then it needs to be retrieved peridically for battery recharge. Once the battery becomes grossly undercharged then its condition is going to deterioate sooner than you think......
The general rule is that, if the battery concerned cannot maintain a "High" charge indication for prolonged periods, then it'll need to be replaced.
The watch in this video uses a CTL1616 for power storage. It seems easy to find online. Here’s a video showing how to change it on a different G-Shock. czcams.com/video/R6JbrVDqR7w/video.html
Your voice reminds me a little of Christopher Walkin.😉
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I received the same watch a G-Shock GW-6900, 3179, but the alarm and sig beeps do not work. Is there anyway to adjust the volumes? If not then the alarm is worthless.
How come you have two watches?
I have dozens of watches. But I only have two wrists.
@@GoodTimekeeperyou have two ankles as well…😉
Can i set the date to UK format?
No.
In the updated 6900 you can
Ie having the day before the month
@@beesafesweetheart8738 that's the updated DW-6900U that doesn't have Tough Solar. The Tough Solar GW-6900 has not been updated.
@@standodge3935I’m looking forward to when it does. The GW-6900U will sell very well if it has similar upgrades like the GWM-5610U
I love the 5000u and 5610u. What I hate about the gw6900 is the time is not displayed while the stopwatch is running. That’s a g shock staple!
I hope they upgrade the gw6900 as well but PLEASE DONT CHANGE TO AN LED
I have the same since 2010 and i use it as my everyday watch . It is amazing and often people ask me which g shock is this...
didn't need to replace the battery yet?
@@trevoidc9859 No! Solar Casios are not having problems even after years! On the other hand i have almost the same years a Citizen eco drive and i have changed the battery...
GW is for solar atomic. G-solar, W-waveceptor
You can "select your time zone." How? By doing nothing once you have the right zone displayed? By pressing "mode"? You know, right?
I wish they upgraded the display on these watches and removed the three eyes. Make the digits larger and display everything on the screen. Like the Protreks. It's a big watch with tiny little display. It seems like wasted display real estate to me. The month and date are especially small on this model.
It’s a beautiful design. And where would the solar panel go
