  • In this psychoeducational video, Dr. Kate Truitt begins by saying if we’re experiencing dissociation, remember that this is our brain attempting to protect us from a threat. When it’s a perceived threat it’s based in an experience from the past. Dissociation can be triggered by any kind of experience that is sensory. It can also be what we’re internally witnessing.
The first tip is the 5,4,3,2,1 Model, where we focus on grounding yourself with mindfulness. What are 5 things we see? 4 things we feel? 3 things we hear? 2 things we smell? 1 thing we taste? The second tip is the Extreme Sensory Experience, which we can do by sucking on a lemon, eating a warhead candy, or holding onto ice or dipping our head into ice water.
The third tip is breathing with Havening Touch, where we utilize breath counts and the Sigh Breath Exercise. The fourth and last tip is CPR for the Amygdala, where we take some time to sense into the moment and preoccupy the brain with games. The SNAP Protocol creates a shift that helps our brain delink from what triggered us.
Dissociation can feel scary, but our brain is trying to keep us safe. We can build a new way forward!

i dont know why but the 5 to 1 technique it always exhausts me terribly. I lose my ground because i have to think and think more about the 5, the 4, etc the 1 thing associated with the senses. So draining. Also, focusing on what these things are outside of me un-grounds me even more. I noticed that for grounding i need to focus inside on what i sense inside only. And, diving head in ice cold water would be such a shocking experience for my senses, its too harsh. Breathing and touch yes, i find it very very calming and helping to release on somatic level.
