  • Dr. Kate Truitt begins by posing the question, what needs to happen in order for our brain to say this was big or scary enough that I’m going to remember it for a very long time? She then explains that there is a concise framework for this that was created by Dr. Ron and Steve Ruden called E.M.L.I.
She then walks us through what E.M.L.I. stands for. The E stands for Event Must Happen. If nothing has happened in our immediate environment, then we’re feeling triggered, or something from a past E.M.L.I. has shown up. In a traumatic encoding, something must be happening in our immediate environment.
The M in E.M.L.I. stands for Meaning, which is directly linked to Amy the Amygdala’s three core values. Am I safe? Am I loveable? Can I be successful? When these three core values are challenged, we feel a threat.
The L in E.M.L.I. stands for Landscape is Vulnerable, which refers to the electrochemical environment of our brain in any given moment. Do we have a lot of stress? Resilience? How is our system responding to the world around us?
Lastly, the I in E.M.L.I. stands for Inescapable, or when our brain or body thinks this could probably kill us. When this occurs, our brain goes into a hyper gamma wave state. Inescapability is all about doing things that our system is unable to make conscious choices about getting out of.
Dr. Kate explains to us that we have to hit all four of these points for our system to make a traumatic encoding.
