Appalachian Trail Thru Hike Announcement (2024)

- I am going to hike the Appalachian Trail in Spring of 2024-Northbound. The Appalachian Trail is a trail that runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. It is roughly 2200 miles, and runs through 14 states. Statistics say that only 1 in 4 who begin the trail will actually complete it.
This will be my 3rd attempt to hike the entire trail from Georgia to Maine. Will I make it all the way this time? Please subscribe to my channel and follow along on my journey to see if I make it to the end!
Rebound, wow, what a story. Trail name Preacher here. I am a lifelong hiker, love the woods, love my wife and family, but most of all, love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have followed several AT hikers on their CZcams channels who have spoken openly about their faith. None quite so openly as you. I believe that you have a very realistic expectation of this third attempt and I believe you have the skills, experience, and stamina to make it this time. I am looking very forward to following your journey and seeing how it unfolds. Distance hiking for me has never been about "finding myself." I know who I am and who holds my future. I just simply love being in the woods. I believe I hear God more clearly there, if for no other reasons, because there are less distractions. Nothing magical or mystical, just walking by faith, learning every day. I will stop short of this becoming a sermon and just say, I wish you all the best and I will pray for you on this journey. Thank you for your comment, @preacher1511. I totally understand and agree with everything you said. That said, my outlook on my hike is totally different this time...and a lot of fear and anxiety is trying to creep in. Doing videos is WAY out of my comfort zone. I'm doing them, because I believe God wants me to do them. My worries are not in my ability to hike the trail, but Putting God first, and HIS will first, keeping up with videos, putting myself 'out there' and presenting myself as I am 'in the moment' without worrying that people are looking to me to be perfect! I'm not...and I'm worried about 'myself' getting in the way of what God wants to do...and being open about what God is doing and continuing to be as open as I was in my Intro video about my faith and relationship with the Lord. I write well, but I don't SPEAK well. I'm telling you this because you said you'd pray for me and I'm being open about my concerns and things I'm hoping people will pray about. I appreciate your prayers and support more than words can express!! The AT community is so kind...and thank you for your kind and understanding comment. I hope that if you feel you are being called to do this yourself, that you would take the leap of faith to do it. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God can work in any situation and any place...but I do think the AT and nature (as you said) are a place that is away from the distractions and His handiwork is so prevalent there. I'm befuddled how anyone can deny that God created it! Best wishes for whatever HIs plans are for you...and may God bless you.
@@ReboundontheAT I hope I can encourage you with a Scripture that has been so helpful to me for so many years. It is Psalm 37:4. It reads, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." All to often, myself included, we want to focus on the last half of that verse and not realized what we need to be focused on in order to get the "desires of our heart." God is a loving, kind, God who delights in giving His children good gifts. But He also desires, even demands, obedience. I know I am preaching to the choir, as you already know these things, but I give you this verse to help you remember that you don't need to fret the video, vlogging, interactions with others, all of that stuff. He will give you the direction you desire, as long as your first priority is to know Him and seek Him daily. That's something I love about the trail is the ability to do that with so much less distraction. Focus your efforts on knowing Him, knowing that He will reveal Himself and His will to you as you get to know Him better. I'll close this mini-sermon with another verse. Matthew 6:33, "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all you need will be given to you." He knows our needs, we just need to know Him and trust Him for them. It is like any other relationship, we must put effort into getting to know the other person and the more we do, the stronger the relationship gets. It's no different with our Heavenly Father, other than He is the best friend we will ever have. I know you know all of this, I just offer it for encouragement. And yes, it is my honor and privilege to pray you from now until Katahdin! God bless.

I have seen so many announcement videos in the past couple of years, I watch probably 20 or so every year before deciding which 5 hikers I will follow that year; and let me tell you that I have never seen a more beautiful and amazing video than this one; instant follow!!! My husband had a call on his life to hike the trail in 2017. God was/is faithful and my husband, Disciple, finished his hike in 181 days. Im excited to follow along and watch how God works in and through you. ♥️

@@ReboundontheAT I will definitely be praying for you. We learned so many lessons the year he hiked that have carried over into our current ministry. My husband pastors a church in Ely, MN and Ely is without a doubt, far, far from the Bible belt. People from all over the world, from every imaginable background hike the trail, just like our little town draws the exact same (we are a tourist town on the edge of the Boundary Waters).
When he hiked we had expectations of what might happen... God showed us how small our thinking truly is. ♥️

Rebound…It’s Sookie!! When your face popped up in my CZcams feed, I had to do a double take. Your hair was longer than when we met in 2016. The minute I heard your voice and saw your chickens I knew it was you Arkansas Traveler. What a wonderful first video. I know how much time blogging takes on the trail so vlogging may be the same. I wish I wasn’t way over in MN I would join you for a week or two on the trail. It will be a joy to watch your journey. I followed two gals last summer and it was so fun. I have been back twice to hike sections. As well as the Ouachita Trail in Arkansas. I wish now I would have tried to find you during my time in Arkansas. I had also a section on the PCT before the trail closed for Covid. I wish you a safe and meaningful hike since it isn’t always about the destination. Hike on and thank you for sharing your heart.

Our backgrounds are very similar and it makes me happy to see you’ve healed so much and found yourself. I’m still working on it. Connection is hard and people mostly scare me. I enjoy my solitude to a fault. I adored seeing your darling home, the chickens, the dog, the kitty, it all seems so tranquil. I hope I can find peace like you. Hello Rebound, Thank you for your video. Your story resonated with me! In 2023 I failed at my thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. I too struggled with nutrition (my number one problem), the fear with the unknown and my deep desire to connect and have a hiking partner/tramily the entire length of the trail. My struggle with nutrition intensified my 2nd and 3rd issues. When I got off the trail I was deeply depressed and still morn the loss of not completing the trail. I think about the trail daily and the desire to get back and try again is ongoing. Wishing you the best with your journey and hoping that you make it all the way. @omisATAdventure Hi Omi! I watched a lot of your videos. Please don't say that you 'failed at your thru hike'!!! You did NOT fail. You did something that most people will never even attempt in their lifetime. Didn't you get over 800 miles?!? That's amazing. I totally agree with you on Nutrition amplifying all of the other stressors on the trail. Even on my second attempt, it took me a while before I recognized when I needed 'fuel' rather than going by my hunger...because I wasn't hungry a lot of the time. Rebound, after listening to your heartwarming story, there is no doubt in my mind that you will finish this time. Three times is a charm, and not only will you finish but with your story telling and video skills, your channel will be a success! You sound very knowledgeable of the AT, with your past experiences and knowing your nutritional requirements, you are way ahead of others trying this for the first time. I think probably half of the people who are doing a through hike of the AT are going to be vlogging the whole thing! Lol I’ve seen soooo many video announcements of impending hikes. Well , maybe I’ll see you on the trail but I won’t be making videos, just memories with my wife and daughter!
I kept written blogs on my first two attempts. I'm feeling way out of my league here, and not sure I'll enjoy the time it takes on trail to do videos. You will be glad, though, if you document your hike in some way, if only pics and a handwritten journal. I always loved seeing families out there, and I hope I DO see y'all out there...and what amazing memories you will be making!
I would make a few videos. You can keep them private if you don't want to share with like minded people. Memories are great but your future grand children will love to see your adventures. Perhaps your daughter might want to document your journey. Have fun 👍

I just followed someone who did it this year. It was weeks and weeks of wet feet. Take a stash of sturdy beyond sturdy plastic liners to prevent trench foot. Which he got.

Whoa...thank you kind sir, but...are you sure you watched MY video? 🙂 Cuz I'm pretty sure I talked about all of my faults, failures, mistakes and even personality issues. I appreciate your faith in me, but I'm telling up front that I am far from perfect, and I'm expecting to struggle a bit while I'm out there. I'm worried about a lot of stuff. I want to try to keep it as real as possible. I know I'm going to get upset, cry, have bad days, maybe get angry, etc. I'm a Christian not because I am perfect, but because I need a Savior! I hope you will still follow my journey knowing this. Also, I may or may not have smoothed a little wrinkle or two out of my face with the editing program. 🤒🥴 That's not very pure. It's kind of deceitful and vain. LOL. Just being honest and keepin' it real!
@@ReboundontheAT none of us are perfect. And good Lord i am far from it as well. I was just saying that you have put moreiles on in your two attempts that most people would in a lifetime. My dream of the AT came to an end due to the military beating my knees into bad shape so my dream hike is simply a 325 mile border to border hike in my home state of Pennsylvania. So i love to live vicariously through people like you on your journey. You go ahead and cry and get angry on the trail and hopefully all of us that are rooting and praying for you can keep you moving on. God Speed M'Lady, i will be patiently anticipating you videos!

I LOVE that feeling of having 'been to church'. A friend and I often joke about having 'been to church' when we get together and Jesus is the topic of conversation. I appreciate your kind words, and especially the sentiment behind it. I always appreciate kind comments; however, I feel like I have failed to convey that I am NOT a wonderful human...I make mistakes, have lots of faults and failures, I don't always handle situations the right way, I often stick my foot in my mouth, I sometimes have wrong attitudes and thoughts, I get angry with people, and I OFTEN do what I don't want to do...namely, trying to control this hike, worry about this hike, stress over this hike, etc., rather than my heart's desire- which is to let this be God's hike and follow His leading, even when what I think He wants doesn't make sense to me. I'm feeling very uncomfortable with some of these kind comments, because I am a flawed human being and I am NOTHING without Jesus. If there is anything good in me, it's Jesus and my dependence on Him...and that is what I hope people will see. I hope this makes sense. I'm hoping to keep this journey (and the videos) 'real'...and that will include the good, the bad and the ugly. I worry that some people are going to be disappointed if they are expecting me to be a saint who has everything figured out. I don't. I'm a work in progress...and a messy one, at that. Picture the scene where you see an 'under construction' sign. LOL...yeah...that messy.

At the end of the day in mid August 2018 the gentleman I was hiking with and I reached the Minerva Hinchey Shelter at mile 1681.5 in Vermont. It was a good time to stop. We had a good 14 mile day behind us with plenty of time left to set up our tents, cook supper and socialize a bit before bed. Just before we turned in we noticed that no one had stirred in the tent that was already there when we arrived. The next morning as we were getting ready to depart out popped Rebound! I don't think I had seen you since Waynesboro, VA 800 miles before. It was so good to see you and we spent the next several moments getting caught up. You shared your woes with the tick situation and you said if you didn't feel better by the next road you were reluctantly done. I snapped a photo of you and wished you well. You don't usually see hikers when they leave the trail. Sad as it was I was glad I could be there at that moment with you. So six years later I was talking to the TV remote, said "CZcams - Appalachian Trail Announcement 2024" and there you were! I'll be starting again too for the fifth time on March 3rd, going to get just past the Smoky's. I did it the first time but like you said in your video the trail keeps calling you.
Thumper! I remember the first time I met you, but don't remember exactly where it was. You were hiking with that lady doctor...was her trail name, "Bones"? I met up with her later down the trail and we hiked a bit of the trail together one day...ended up at the same shelter that night.
I'm so glad you stumbled upon my channel. I've been going through the videos on your channel. You did a really nice job of documenting your hike! I hope I can do as well. I feel very intimidated with doing videos. I've never had a You Tube channel before. I kept written blogs on my past two hikes.
I DO remember you taking that photo. That had been a rough night for me. I had woken up in a sweat, so I figured I had broken a fever...probably leftover from the Ehrlichia. That had also been the day I cracked my rib, and I had a lot of pain that night. It was actually the cracked rib that was the deciding factor to get off the trail.
Congrats on finishing the trail and summitting Big K!! That's awesome. I do understand the call of the trail, and I'm glad you're still out there hiking it. :-) So you are hiking it again by sections? Or did I misunderstand? It's possible our paths might cross out there! Whatever you do, stay safe, and have fun!

Very inspirational video. I subscribed. I am interested to join you by video on your next AT journey. I have been watching AT videos for a couple of years and meeting a lot of wonderful people. I find you to be a very interesting person. I am 74 years of age and spend my bush time differently. I like to solo tent for the summer to get away from 2023 and be back in 1862 with Emily Dickinson. Wonderful and inspirational story. I started at Amacola Falls in October with the intent to make 125 miles it to Fontana Dam and being home by Thanksgiving and then resuming in March of 2024. Due to a drought making water scarce, my cell phone not working and a family crisis in my wifes family, I headed home after only 50 miles. I plan to resume where i left off at Hog Pen Gap sometime in March. I have a grandson due around the 8th. Once I know all is well and stable, I'll be heading back down. I'm "Marathon John" and I hope to see you on the trsil.
50 miles on the AT is something most people will never be able to do. Congrats on that! I hope the rest of your hike goes well when you resume...and congrats on the soon-to-be-born Grandson!

Hello there Rebound, I dont know if you will see this, but if you do, I wanted to say that your video (especially your narration) is very engaging. It reminded me of one of my favorite radio programs. The radio program is the BBN (bible broadcasting network), and is called "Christian Classics". It is a program where a lady reads classic non fiction Christian books. Her name is Lynn Brooks and the cadence and articulation of your narration is very very similar to hers. thank you for your videos and you do a great job with your story telling and narration.
Interesting! I've never heard of this before. I'll look into it when I get back home! I actually prefer narrating, as opposed to speaking to the camera, because I express myself much better in writing. Unfortunately, there is not time to write and narrate daily out here. I so appreciate your kind words!!

I really enjoyed your story! I closed my eyes and just listened. Like you i am fascinated with the AT. Ggatewood was so inspiring. If it wasnt for the creepy crawlers id be there with you. Would have to do it in the coldest months. Hello from canada and will be following your journey. ❤

Hi Kara, hope I spelled your name correctly. Your video is very warm and down to earth. I love your country home, dog and chickens and that they all have names. You are a very determined person, starting at the beginning of the AT for the third time. I believe you'll make it this time. Getting to Maine the first time was very close. Jesus will definitely guide you through. He's my best friend too. I'll enjoy following your 2024 hike.
