    Race engineer Dejan Ninic of Complete Analysis, an ex-WRC consultant amongst other accolades, gives us the rundown on the change from Yokohama Advan's to full slicks for the 2023 edition of the ‪@YokohamaMotorsports‬ ‪@WorldTimeAttackChallenge‬.
    The RP968 team & driver Barton Mawer managed to get the time down from their previous best of 1:19.27 to 1:17.86 over the course of the weekend, giving them the overall win for the 4th time in a row.
    We also saw a massive jump up the time sheets from Cole Powelson, going from a previous best of 1:30:02 to a 1:25.94 in the Lyfe Racing R35 GT-R. The old S13 Hammerhead, now under new ownership and rechristened as Tanuki, also set a blistering 1:20.45 time on debut, noting the car has also had some huge changes to be dialled in and had to be retired before the end of the event.
    The Open and Clubsprint classes also saw some new class records this year from the Xtreme GTR and DC Jap Automotive teams noting not all classes have had the same options in tyre open up to them either.
    Note 2023 tyre restrictions for Pro and Pro-Am Classes were in place in regards to the car weight dictating the allowable tyre width and height, so while teams can now run slicks, there are still limitations.

    If one HAS to run a "DOT", or other prescribed tyre, there can be a significant benefit in shaving the tyre - removing tread rubber - to the minimum allowed.
    With less tread mass there is less heating from the tread distortion, and the tyre can also reject it more easily as the heat has to travel through less rubber.
    Strange as it may sound, going to proper "race" tyres might be a cost saving, if one can get more use out of the tyres. Plus, of course, there is the safety aspect if the "DOT" tyres are failing.

    The mutual respect is admirable. I think many in the industry can appreciate Andre.
    To some degree I'm a bit sad that WTAC isn't staying with the DOT approved tire as it seems this would further increase the average cost of entrance and moving away from the spirit of WTAC in general.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 9 měsíci +7

      I would agree, BUT, I think the Pro and Pro-Am classes where slicks are allowed are pretty far from the average entry. Slicks, while a fair investment every race weekend, are really not the biggest part of the budget.
      The Clubsrpint class, which is very active, is still 'limited' to the DOT rated Advan's, which is a tyre that is also more applicable to those builds as well making it a win win - Taz.

    • @garagecedric
      @garagecedric Před 9 měsíci +4

      In this class the cars are pretty much tubeframe silhouette cars with non production car engines anyway, running road legal tyres is almost silly when the cara have nothing in common with a road car. Especially considering the safety aspect.

    • @NicoKyunKyun
      @NicoKyunKyun Před 9 měsíci

      i don't think tyre cost is an issue for a motorsport where the turbo can be a consumable item

      @maedmaex125 Před 9 měsíci

      @@garagecedric WTAC rules basically state that original strut towers and everything between must be original or at least resemble original structure, rules only allow modifications for clearance of certain parts, no tube frames are allowed. Engines must be based on a production engine too.

    When you go hard out on a tyre and rim that has no heat in it
    You can tear the rubber about 3 mm from the surface
    Tyre warmers should go on for at least an hour before track use
    You really need to get the carcass warm
    You’ll find that the handling is so much more predictable as this side wall forms a part of you suspension spring rate
    Tyre warmers are a must for any serious person
    It’s a safety issue
    I’ve seen so many cars crash on cold tyres it begs belief
    The elcheapo ones from China cost $1500 nz and to be fair they’re not half bad
    If you’re into going fast and the rules allow
    Do yourself a favour and buy some and use them

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes tyre warmers are amazing. Not all events lend themselves to their usage, hill climbs for example, but where you can use them, are allowed and have the budget to do so (you have to power them with $somthing as well, not all tracks give you that) then they are absolutely a no brainer for sure, we agree 👍 - Taz.

    Do people ever refuse interviews, and why?

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Most just say 'yeah, lets do it later' rather than just saying no, which is a little annoying. No would be better and more polite. Andre will only ask once or twice then move on.
      Why no?
      Not everyone wants to be on camera and potentially make themselves look like an idiot. We're not here to do that to people and we make that clear to try settle peoples nerves. Many people often think they know less than they do and actually share some great insights once you get them into the swing of things.
      We generally avoid people who are pushing to be on camera, they are often the opposite in our experience.
      We also really try to stick to the technical people which can rub some non-tech company or car owners up the wrong way sadly. Not our intention.
      Andre will often ask around about a potential guest before chatting to them as well as if others he knows are saying good things about them, that is a good sign they are on the ball in what they do at least.
      Hope that gives you a little bit of insight into what you've been watching for the last 6 years or so mate! Cheers for the question and hope you're still enjoying what the team do after all this time 😎 - Taz.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 9 měsíci

      While a very fast car, this is going to be a long way off the pace of an F1 car. The rule books are also very different for what they can and can't do even if they had an F1 level budget - Taz.

      It was faster than an A1GP car, which is a still a big step down from an F1 car, which while being slightly heavier has nearly twice the power, and better aero' and chassis dynamics - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A1_Grand_Prix_car
