  • We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.
Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

Who is getting "stressed out" pedaling a bike?
I am a passionate cyclist and anything that gets people into cycling has some merit to me. Plus there are huge benefits for those physically unable to cycle - my father being a great example. Without them he'd be hanging up his helmet and I am grateful the technology exists to allow him to continue.
But for the people that are simply unwilling- not unable to pedal, why? And part of the attraction for me is to get away from technology (or at least digital technology) and ebikes take away from that 'purity'. Still if it gets people on bikes and out of cars I guess that's good.

My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.

And on that subject, here’s my 5 cents: I totally get the advantages of mid-drive and of torque sensors (in fact I’ve got a bike with that set up, and it’s great). But if you want to experience the most fun (“wheeee”!) feeling on an eBike - go for a rear hub motor with a cadence sensor. And ideally with a throttle as well as pedal assist (if your country’s regulations allow that). Guaranteed fun! 😎

I have some real questions no one seem to have answered in a non-marketing way. What is the longevity of the batteries? Not counting the cheap batteries blowing up like the ones on the cheap hoverboards, how many charges can the batteries take before they need to be replaced? They all seem proprietary, so how would we know the manufacturer will still be around by the time we need a replacement? And what do they do with the batteries?

I have a Trek electric from 2014. It uses a Bosch central Motor 250w with a battery pack of 400Wh.
My bike now has 22.400km on the odometer. It has lost about 20% of range in "eco mode" and about 30% in "turbo mode". I opened the proprietary battery pack by curiosity, and it's full of standard Lithium cells 18650.
Bosh still provide that model/shape of the pack now (even in a 500wh version), but if they stop making it, I know I can still replace the cells with new ones.

Let me tell you why they won't be the future of transportation. You can't leave them anywhere without them getting stolen. I know someone that had their bike stolen across the road from a police station. You'd be crazy to leave your ebike chained up somewhere you went. These bikes are really expensive and will get stolen real fast. So that means you can only ride somewhere that you can safely park the park.

Here's what you need to know. Ebikes are highly regulated compared to escooters and skateboards. Ebikes are limited to 750watts at 20MPH. Well there you have it. Escooters can go higher like boosted rev 1500wats at 25MPH that's a huge hill climb power. They have nanrobot that has 2K-4K watts at 40-50MPH.
So why get an EBike? Regulation my friend ebikes are people friendly while scooters and skateboards get mad at you for riding. Also if your in Europe then you get weaker versions sadly.
About Class 3 28MPH peddle assist only. I dont see them around so there rare maybe on road bikes but you will mainly see class 2. Peddle and throttle 20MPH 750watt.

Just so people in the UK know: Unless your electric bike complies with the EAPC Regulations, which specify the motor power - must be less than 250 Watts; the speed - limited to 15 mph; and the need for pedals - that means no e-scooters - they can only be ridden on private land with the owners permission. If they do not comply, then on public land they are classed as motorcycles and must be registered, plated, taxed and insured, and you must have a minimum licence, wear an approved helmet and can only be used on public roads - never cycleways !
You take the risk, ignorance is no defence. If you do get caught, you risk having points on your licence and you will have future insurance problems - and premium loading !
I have ridden a (compliant) e-bike for ten years or more.

    • @tconnolly9820
      @tconnolly9820 Před rokem +1

With a "pedelec" e-bike you will have to pedal to also engage the motor. There are different levels of assist depending on the particular bike.
Low is usually about an additional 50% assist along with pedalling.
High/Turbo is usually around 250/300% assist along with pedalling.
But depending on where you live, the motor stops assisting when you reach 20mph. 15mph in Europe.
You might be thinking of an e-scooter?
And no, pedaling will not charge the battery. The more you pedal and the lower assist level you select, the less battery you will use. That's all.
