A pearl of great wisdom here, “The avoidance of joy is itself a kind of narcissism” (Scruton). There is no virtue in dull introspection or stoical endurance. We must beware of the comfort zone of misery!
Indeed we must, and enjoy life's victories when they come our way!
I'd be interested to watch them pit this notion against stoicism and other forms of asceticism, to see where a reasonable balance would lie.
🖐seven yrs!
Story of my life
@John Galt I'm not yet clear what part of mine or Scruton's statement you are disagreeing with. I fully accept that to sacrifice can lead to joy and acknowledge that the early Stoics saw it as their fundamental goal to align their desires with the divine Logos and as rational creatures to "sing hymns to God" as Epictetus puts it. My reference to stoical endurance is a criticism of the modern, popular tendency to reduce stoicism to a kind of "grin and bear it" resilience which sees virtue in mere-self-control.
Hey, JP, I'm a renovation carpenter, so I always love it when you use those analogies. Thanx
I'm a plumber, and I noticed he called it his "plumber story" - I'm wondering what kind of creative plumbing there could've been in this project, I've heard him mention this reno before
well of course you do,he just feedbacking your pre concived ideologies.
@@Sergio_deus Can't tell if parody or serious
@@Sergio_deus my preconceived ideologies about the plumbing that he did in his house renovation?
@@maelstrom2313 well of course you cant...
PLEASE check out Scruton's documentary on "Why Beauty Matters"! It is incredible and changed me forever!!! It touches on things very important to Peterson's ideals! The nauseating post modernist idea that everything is equally meaningful and beautiful because "everything is a matter of opinion" is blown to PIECES. Also touched on are many salient rememberances about Jung and the "disinterested gaze" and what that has to do with Beauty. An absolutely amazing documentary that I watch at least twice a year to keep myself sharp.
Pop Music, Modern Art, Modern Architecture, Makeup! Scruton is an unassuming little BEAST of a british gentleman
Thanks, I'm 5 minutes in and loving it, will savour it in full later.
So refreshing. Playfulness as an invitation to happiness has been incredibly life giving to me as well. Stay playful and allow gratitude to soak up those micro moments of happiness when they stop by 😊
Sir Roger shared two ideas with great value if I can find it in me to apply them to my own life. Great.
Dr Peterson, please diagnose me. For the last 3months Ive been hooked on watching lectures and debates. Almost always featuring your good self. Ive never suffered like this before....under all this knowledge and enlightenment. Im learning things at 52. Should I be concerned?
You should be happy ¡¡¡
Oh J.P., I simply CAN NOT wait until you begin the second series of Biblical interpretation. I am simply delighted that you are doing more on the bible!! Thank you!
Nothing like some fresh lobster on a sunday afternoon
He spoke at Liberty University and they posted the hour video yesterday if you need another fix.
@@noganl hey man. I heard you got the stuff.
And a splendid afternoon to you, fine sir...
John Patrick Acquaviva throw in the SJW's incessant accusations of "word salad," and Sir Roger's crutons, even better
You can't talk about anything transcendent without bringing God into focus. So please let me say why there must be an actual (not merely a metaphoric) divine. Millions of beneficial genetic mutations had to occur to produce all the life on earth. They all had to survive and enrich the species in which they occurred. Given the limited time frame in which this had to occur they could not have all occurred by chance. Their occurrence was a literal miracle by any statistical definitions. So there must be a literal God of some kind guiding things. This is very important to look into. Peace.
Great presentation. Thank you so much , Professor!
Always good seeing a fresh upload in this channel
All the knowledge you need to navigate life right here neatly packaged. Wish YT was around when I was 20.
I have learned how to tie a tie, fix a washing machine, fix my car, play the guitar, violin, and piano. I have used CZcams to learn psycho analytics, psychologically, philosophy, and human behavioral biology. Out of everything I have learned here, I am most grateful for being taught the reason why I should clean my room.
Mathew Hill Well said. Good ol' rule #1.
Still, it takes a willing person to watch these. Not everyone's cup of tea.
@@mathewhill5556 "Sorting yourself out" as the great man said. Well stated, Mathew!
Coop Cooper I can't argue with that. Those who want knowledge and wisdom will seek it out.
My father would asked me to help solve problems he was having while doing up houses . I loved it and it got me thinking outside the box. I was only 3 years old when I solved my first problem for him. We worked together a lot.
"Happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue" - That's brilliant.
Wonderful discussion. THANK YOU!!!
I love that concept - doing good is its own reward, nothing more is needed or expected.
The world needs more Jordan Petersons and less unicorns.
#unicornslivesmatter.... why do u hate unicorns so much? 😎
I understand the unicorn-Peterson metaphor in your comment, but not sure what the whole ivory tower bit is supposed to represent ... 🤔 very confusing for me I'm afraid
For the blackpilled JBP is an unicorn, not a bad one though.
"Fewer".
Jordan Peterson always touches on what is relevant to my current life. Thank you Dr. Peterson for your enlightened discussions. I am grateful for these lessons. They inspire me to stumble forth and implement and integrate what I can into my life.
grateful for this. i loved the conversation between you both - one of your video highlights i feel. more of these and less of you being 'interviewed' (cross-examined) by dumb journalists. what you are doing here (and in your lectures and on your tour) is where your energies should be put. they further your mission, and we all benefit.
A quote from Twin Peaks came to my mind while I was watching the video:
“What do you fear most in the world?”
“The possibility that love is not enough.”
Excellent questions and spot-on answers.
really great questions. wish there were more. thank you!
Thank you Dr Peterson. You are so inspiring! 😘
This Scruton guy is seriously impressive. I don't doubt if he had a word Cambridge might well change its mind.
"Life is short. . . No time to waste then. There's things that need to be done. There's things that need doing. Get the hell up. Make yourself efficient. Aim at something that makes the transiency if life worthwhile because such things exists." -JBP
🤯
I need more JBP x Scruton collabs
Happiness is a welcome visitor.
Thank you.
Beautiful / Much beautiful TRUTH !!!
Excellent conversation.
@4:11 he wraps up beautifully, the man is "Simply" genius.. peace and blessings Prof.
i like dr. peterson's appreciation for the art of comedy. it goes beyond entertainment, as culturally it helps us to understand where social boundaries exist and just how far we can push them.
My god, the absolute beauty of those questions.
He has a relaxing voice. Its calms me down.
Eye opening
I wish I was Jordan Peterson
really man..... he is just amazing...
That you JP?
Be your own man! Peterson surely have many flaws that you don't see. Take him as an example, but don't forget yourself while doing so!
We love u
Sir Roger is a titan.
So much to do, so little time; you can't do it all, so do what you can and remember what you can isn't everything.
I could listen to Scruton all day.
Such a shame for Cambridge to have caved to the emporers new virtue fad. Godbless JP
That's a wonderful way of putting it. Thanks.
No, now we see their true colors and their hive minds mentality. Cambridge is nothing but a shell of its former self.
@peter kreisler come again?
Cambridge made an utter fool of themselves. Universities will be redundant soon enough anyway.
Just discovered Sir Roger after reading he was fired. What a blow to the UK government. Anyway, I think I'm hooked. And this other man Peterson is equally brilliant.
The legend, Sir Roger.
The last sentence is the kicker. Short term happiness isn't the goal...it is a result of something deeper. My take: wisdom and virtue bring happiness on the sleds of gratitude.
I don't think I've ever seen it more beautifully put. Your own? Not that it makes it less profound, just curious. 😉😀
I love Sir Loberster Scrutonson!
good conversation
What an accurate and powerful advice
Awesome
Being a Journeyman plumber, I was waiting for his compelling plumber's story
Super early! Missed ya, JP! 🤓
Such a role model ❤️
Being is conscious doing. Happiness is not a goal in itself, it is who we are when the truth of our own nature is revealed.
Aah, it's two of my favorite people!
Good video Mastero
Sir Cruton's flower looks like it's got a 1980's spy cam in it...
Happiness is a short-lived fleeting emotion. Man should strive to arrive at clairvoyance.
Ah...
the good old days at Cambridge, when you could still talk.
... and think!
I'm glad JP put content out concerning Cambridge, and I hope the university of Cambridge reverses its position and allow him to speak, but shortening this conversation made it lose some of its magic, the conversation as a whole was more moving.
Constructive criticism aside, I'm glad with more JP content, I like to stay updated on someone who influenced my life greatly.
Laughter is the release of tension, Music is the language of the Heart, the Soul and the Spirit, Wine to make Man's heart glad --- 'Companion', the word companion ultimately comes from the Latin com- (“with”) and panis (“bread, food”) -- someone you would share your food with.

Good discussion and use of shorter form presentation 🦞👍
I am here because I like open discussions
Thumbs up
Interesting. As usual...😊
" _What I what I would say is that
happiness means ultimately your fulfillment as a person and that that that isn't the same as gratification of your desires, it is it means the kind of transformation of your your being such that you can look on what you are and say " For all my faults I accept that thing. " and that and when there an occasion comes to rejoice you accept it and enter it rather than say, asking yourself " Do I deserve it " you know. Those, that's that avoidance of joy which many people have is actually itself a kind of _*_narcissism_*_ . The happy person goes out and embraces the the occasion for for rejoicing and he does so because his own nature is at ease with itself . . ._ "
What's the narcissism in this? What's the underlying psychology and pathology of such narcissism? What are its causal factors? I *need* to know.
I am here because Jordan Peterson ❤
As humans we have the luxury of experiencing death without dying. Knowing death without dying and so, choosing to live as a part of something beyond death.
I invite critique of this thought.
Yes
Please speak on Tartaria
Hi Jordan, im Lautaro im from Argentina and watching your lectures its making me change, and for good, but I cant take of my head the tought of killing myself, mi question is, do you think a human being can deeply change? It there a life after this one?
If you could tell me this it will really help me, for real
Lovely thoughts on piety of life and happiness of slaves.
Jordan Peterson is great! I basically worship him. He's helped me get over my problems and he's an inspiration. I've gotten over my fears because of him and I've started this channel just because of him. Even my videos are about him. I've just started the channel. Please check it out if you guys can.
Jordan Peterson for prime minister.
Trey Gowdy for US President.
In a better world.......
Amen
Was anyone else getting comments from the "deleted screens from ace ventura" mixed in with these comments??? It was weird; but I enjoyed both!
9:40 "If you're not going for a laugh, then why are we talking?" - Jerry Seinfeld ;-)
My husband died unexpectedly on the 18th of September, 2018, nearly five months ago. We had been married for nearly 40 years. For me, his death has been traumatic. I no longer know who I am or where I am going. We had been very close, and dependant on one another. Now I feel as though I am half whole, that a part of me has been sawed off. The Auden poem FUNERAL BLUES expresses exactly how I feel, because my husband was "My North, My South". Sir Roger Scruton, do you have any advice for me?
If I can say something, find your love everywhere. In trees, in the sky, birds singing, spring, summer, winter, rain. Your husband lives in this love you harbour within yourself.
@@anuranbhattacharya9938 Thank you . Yes, I do love nature.
Ralston College. Going to be the finest institution!
What a tasty wisdom :)
Off topic, can someone please tell me what's that peach thing that's always on British TV host shirts
Highly recommended "The face of God" by Sir Roger Scruton. Great mind.
Centrally planned Society remain at the mentality of children and plus they are eternally afraid of completing the life cycle. I do not think that in ancient times people dreaded death like they do now. I believe that they had more economic freedom and as such had more maturity and a deeper wisdom as well as knowledge and states of consciousness. it made it easier to accept the transition from this world to the unknown. After all it is those that are immature that are afraid of the unknown, not the mature.
Holy holy
Yay
Thank you jordan. Youve help me realize alot. Have you ever got deep into the anunnaki? Like eho marduk was. Ive seen you speak about him. Definitely curious of your view if any view about them
Aristotle word for the goal of life is eudaimonia and it has been badly translated as happiness. The word happiness does not connote enough depth and profundity which are embedded in the word eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is experienced when internal conflict is minimized and virtue is exercised.
Can you imagine a being a carpenter working for Dr. Jordan Peterson? Then he tells you to use your own creativeness to create something beautiful on his 3rd level, what could possibly go wrong.
I am sorely disappointed with Cambridge. Next to Oxford they have one of the greatest Philosophy departments in the world. How they would stand for this obvious censorship in cancelling Peterson's talks is beyond me. Perhaps it has something to do with Peterson helping Blackwood to found a new type of college that would compete with their monetary interests?
RIP Sir Roger Scruton
Some words and concepts used here we have grown weary of or at least become estranged from like the "L" word and the "H"word. I remember a Catholic Priest no longer with us (the "D" word took him) define in a sermon that Love was "the Power to live entirely for the other." and again on another occasion tell how at a gathering of local priests how an invited guest (a local Rabbi) interrupted a discussion on the "Sermon on the Mount" to ask whether they knew what "Happiness" would have meant to the "sermons" first listeners. Of course the Priests didn't know so the Rabbi told them - "The Knowledge that one is in exactly the right place at the right time."
They’ve make fun of me with my exaggerated hands mannerisms, to the point that in an argument my daughter held my hands down and I stopped talking as if someone has pushed the silence button and here it is the Professor with a case of hand mannerisms (almost as severe as mine), usually that’s more frequent in Spaniard or Italian culture though. 😉
Jordan I just watched your speech at liberty university. and why do you seem so slowed down, are you sick, you hands were shaking. im worried Jordan please tell me everything is okay.
And this was done back when Cambridge was an actual educational institution which encouraged thought and free speech. The days long gone now.
Can someone please explain the second question ?
Alguien que haga los subtítulos a español por favor
👏👏👏
How I wish to be in the same room as them
An old conversation shared now because it was filmed in Cambridge?...
Hello mr Peterson, hope you doing well.. i would like to ask some questions if you don't mind.
1) Are you aware that NZ government banned your book right after the mass murder in christchurch nz.
2) Are you gonna respond about it?
3) why do you think the gov banned your book? What is the reason behind it?
What A question @ 6:50
