How to Grow Mushrooms: Dub Tub Method

- This method to grow mushrooms is one of my long time favorites because it was my first bulk method after learning BRF cakes. I used to use a cheese shredder to shred 4 BRF cakes until i learned how to use quart of rye grain spawn and it worked every time.
In this video i could have gotten a bigger harvest if i would have used a sawdust substrate like Agrocybe aegerita prefers but as you can see they still tolerate the coco coir.

I did this 35 years ago but I grew the mycelium in a petri dish with agar agar, then to bird seed sterilized in a pressure cooker and used compost as the growing substrate.

Dong the same to grow my own oysters and portobellos!!! Can wait to cook them after! I like to put them in almost all my dishes in someway!
Good luck with the portobello, they are advanced and require specially decomposed straw substrate as well as a peat moss casing layer.

So I took the top off my box to check and see how colonized the substrate was. Lots of healthy mycelium growth but the lid is starting to build up condensation. Is that fine or should I not push the lid down all the way??

Can you upload a video about growing lobster mushroom?
So do you think a pound of substrate would be equal to 3 quarts?
At which stage should the exposure be done? Or is there no problem with exposure from the beginning?
Great content, why is it the dub tub method and not a unmodified method, is it because you place another empty one on the top?
Must say those pins are the best I've seen!!! 🧡
Yeah it’s the “double tub” method
I like how you don't cut the plastic bags, have you notice better results that way?
🤔 Can you make a sequel to this video, but showing how you meant to get to the second flush? Awesome detail 😊👍
Just add some water to the bin after harvesting. Dump the excesss water out after 1-2 hours of soakin. Super easy
@@SporenSprout so "field capacity" is not the same after harvest?
That's the part that stumbled me a bit, but i guess it makes sense, it's already fully colonized. But it was worth the ask 😊👍
Lots of good information, thank you!
@@astbrnrd I'm a beginner too, but thinking about it, I'd presume that field capacity wouldn't be the same after the mycelium has started fruiting, and especially after harvesting. Mushrooms are 90% water, so if you've just harvested a bunch of mushrooms, that means the water that *was* in your substrate is now inside all those mushrooms. So if you want more mushrooms (i.e., another flush/harvest), you'll need to introduce much more water back into the substrate (i.e., rehydrate it by dunking/soaking). I hope this makes sense! 😊
Is this tub more expensive than a regular tote? Also, would it be the same to just use a regular tote?
Thank you!
bravo!
Thanks man going to have to give this a shot, easy straight forward video man cheers!!! You can buy already made grain ready to inoculate if I’m right ? Let me know.

@@SporenSprout is 1 10ml syringe of spores enough to do this method twice ? Or full 10ml in the inoculation jar for one ?
@@User12565 You can use 2 ml per jar
Im curious. If you were to grow in a closed room with an IQ Air system running, it it considered bad even though an iq air gets rid of bacteria. Spores and viruses in the air?
what are the measurements of the container you are using
Nice video!!! What's the ratio you are using and do you mist after adding the grains and sub?
1 quart of spawn to 3 quarts of substrate. No misting until fruiting, and the mist is only applied to the inside of the top tub to keep humidity up.
Thank you for the great video. How much grain do you use in your spawn? Looks to be about a quart, but wondering if you use a specific amount? I'm considering using a spawn grain bag and thinking that I could divide into two for two bins. Each spawn bag is 2 quarts. Thank you.
Yeah that sounds good, each quart jar is about 1 LB of spawn.
Awesome video! Thanks for the knowledge. When fruiting is light necessary? Like if I left the dub tub in a dark closet in fruiting conditions would they still grow?
Thanks for watching! They will still grow without light but the mushrooms may be skinny, long and deformed with a smaller yield.
@@SporenSprout aha! Good to know. Thank you Broski! I'm new to mycology so appreciate the info. I'm subscribed 👍🏻
@@zorgath420 Mushrooms do not need light to grow. They do not use light for photosynthesis like plants do. All the light does is tell the mushroom which way is up and which direction it should grow in. Which is very handy and highly recommended to achieve consistency and easier growing. But yes, they will still grow without it.
hi , great video. have a question . Is it works whit PF tek¿ huge from ecuador
Yes it does. I use a cheese shredder to shred the cakes and I add 4 cakes per 6 quart bin plus like 3-4 quarts of substrate per bin
hey great video! what light schedule do you use?
Thanks for watching! I use 12/12
hi do you have a jar of liquid culture tutorial and i subbed
Thanks! Here’s the tutorial: l
czcams.com/video/JYl_UnYK_kU/video.html
Can i grow white button mushrooms this way, because they need around 90% humidity of what i heard, and at the fruiting stage the second lit is only resting on the other which results in less humidity if im not wrong. What can i do to keep it more humid, so i can grow them?
Also thanks for the great and detailed video 😊
Yes it would work but white button mushrooms require specialized compost substrate and a casing layer to successfully fruit. As long as you use the correct substrate it would work.
My question is about septic light from the moon. Sort of a hidden knowledge.
Yo fam. How you get such a dense flush?
Hey man I’m pretty new to this how did you get grain spawn in a jar ? What did you use I’ve only ever seen spawn bags is there a better of the two ?
Here’s the video of how to make the grain:
czcams.com/video/uFQr2JhqmG4/video.html
You can put the grain in bags or jars, it’s just preference
What are the weights of coco peat and vermiculite?
Yeah, pioppino, of course!
hey man just wondering if this could possibly work with morel mushrooms. idk if you have any experience with them but just thought id ask. i think wood would be needed in the substrate to start anyways
It would possibly work but you have to have a freshly bred strain of black morel and I believe composted substrate is best. It may be a good idea to add viable rye grass seeds to the final substrate and allow grass to grow in the tub as well.
What happens or causes your substrate to not go full white?
Great video, I have a question. If the tub is completely closed while the mycelium colonises the substrate how does the mycelium breathe if there is no air flowing into the box? And with the other tub on top of the colonised substrate how does it breathe also?
The lid is not a tight seal even when clicked into place. It is fine how it is for 6-10 days during colonization. You can add a couple holes to the lid and cover with tape and that’s fine too.
The top tub is removed 3-5 times daily to fan and mist to replace the air and it works fine. You can add holes to the top bin if you want as well.
@@SporenSprout okay I understand now, thank you very much
It is fabulous how from a spore syringe and using the dubtub method you got a full canopy!! I've been trying all sorts of thing to get a canopy, but my mushrooms always tend to acumulate in one spot or another. I heard recently that clonning a mushroom to agar could help. Could you get me some leads?

nice vid, how often should the fruit be exposed to light?
12 hours on and 12 hours off is good
Holy cow, thank you. How relaxed are you with sterilization conditions? I am trying to find the lower bound for sterilization to maximize laziness
If you use pop corn as a grain spawn you won’t even need a pressure cooker. Just steam bath the jars of corn for 2 hours. The substrate is just pasteurized in the bucket with hot water and adding the spawn doesn’t need to be in front of a flow hood. So it is a very easy relaxed method!
@@SporenSprout damn! :)
OK that tattoo is FUCKING AWESOME. I could recognize psilocin from a mile away hehe
Came here per your suggestion on another video haha. Wondering if there's a reason you don't put holes in the second tub you use as a lid? I see a lot of talk about needing fae and having the air filters in the holes etc etc
You can definitely put a few holes in the top tub and cover with micropore tape if you want. Iv grown this way so many times and it works great so I never added holes, I just open it 3 times per day to air it out. If you are gone on vacation then the holes would be helpful.
@@SporenSprout Great info, thank you! I like the idea of not having to drill holes or buy more tape so I'm here for that entirely
I noticed that the substrate was only pasteurized. Will this work with hardwood pellets and bran? Or how would the dubtub method work with a hardwood substrate? (or does it as most hardwood substrates require sterlization?) And btw loved the straight to the chase vids! Subbed!
Yes it would work but If you use bran it will have to be sterilized in a pressure cooker first and then dumped into the tub and mixed with grain spawn.
Make sure you also take into account how much fresh air exchange the species needs, if it is something with higher fae requirements you might want to add holes to the top container or otherwise think about increasing airflow
@@wilkiedilkieagree 100%. In fact most tek methods don’t have enough fae which equals subpar results. I always try to replicate Mother Nature conditions for mushrooms as well as cannabis. Think about it: mushrooms grow outdoors, not confined in a box indoors. I create those same conditions regardless of the tek. High humidity, fresh O2 and temps similar to Mother Nature ie: high 70s day low 70s night. Led lighting on timers for day. Room humidity between 65-80%. Not everyone has a dedicated room for this but if you can you are in full control of the ambient environment. Even doing cakes in sgfc have huge yields when done in these rooms. No matter what tek you do, always try to mimic the outdoor environment and maintaining those conditions. 😉
Nice video. . You said , soake the tub in water for a couple hrs to havest another flush. How do you mean? Thanks! This the second video of yours I've watched. Subbed
Thanks for watching! After harvesting, just pour some water into the tub and let it sit for a couple hours and then dump out the water and fruit again.
Did you put honey on the top? @4:29
hey man this vid was awesome! I'm getting ready to run some pure coir shoeboxes with brf cakes as spawn. Do you think adding a casing layer at 100 percent colonization or at 0 percent would be beneficial at all? I have around 2 quarts of spawn and the bricks i have make about 5 quarts of substrate. could i put the rest i dont mix on top as a casing? thanks!
Yes I just sprinkle some extra substrate on top before closing the lid to colonize.
@@SporenSprout sweet thank you, did just that about a quater inch to 1/8 of substrate on top after I spawned, seing knots and primordia!
U use a LED strip light to keep temperature?
Thank you 🌞
No it is to help the mushrooms grow straight up.
Hi, What u add in the Bucket from beginning and if theres any Alternative fir both items if not avalible?! Can we keep spawn in fridge till arrange to transfer it to plant ?! ( white mashroom)..thx
In this video I used a brick of compressed coconut fiber. For white button mushroom you will have to use fresh compost substrate instead.
Good
@Cubzritps
Nice tat 💯🫡
How long do you leave the fruiting light on for? Do you use 12/12 or 18/6 like growing plants or just 24/7 until harvest?
It’s not a huge deal but 8/16 or 12/12 is good.
@Spore n' Sprout Awesome. I usually have plants flowering so I can have them all on the same timer. Thanks for the help!
What LED light strip do you use?
An hour a day is enough.
Same as marijuana I think 12 and 12 is the best
Hi, During fruiting conditions, what temperature are they kept at? Thanks
70 F is optimal
No sterilization of the substrate, or are you presuming that the added hot water is enough to possibly pasteurize it, though not completely sterilize?
Yes, it’s pasteurization with boiling water.
Hmm Ive never used liner and dont really have issues with side pins. I just pat down the sides after spawning to bulk.
It doesn’t matter if you pat down the sides, the substrate shrinks while growing and the side pins will come after it shrinks and exposes the sides.
Hey quick question. How much in weight would that coconut fiber brick be?
1.4 pounds or 650 grams
So when someone says to dunk it in water for 2nd flush, do you take it out of the liner? Or put the whole container in water and sink it?
Yeah carefully take it out of the liner and submerge it. You have to be very careful not to break the cake. You could even just pour water into the bin and then let it sit for a few hours to absorb and then tilt it to dump out excess
Thank you for your video. Where to buy syringe with culture? Btw i am watching you from Russia
I am not sure where you can get them in Russia. You will have to find them wild.
I see some people saying you don't need light, and some that has a light on 24/7 straight at the mushrooms, what is correct? I read that a dim lgith for a couple hours is good enough, but what do you do?
Low strength LED light straight above the mushrooms for 12 hours or more.
Love how clear and detailed this was. However, I'm wondering about the specifics of what you meant at the very end when you said "after harvest you can dunk the substrate for 4 hours and get a second flush." Do you or can you talk more specifically about this in another one of your videos?
I wonder why I get that question all the time! It’s very easy just add some water to the tub and let it soak and then dump out the excess and fruit again. Or remove the substrate cake and soak it and then place it back in the bin.
Could you use the dub tub for mushrooms that grow horizontally like reishi?
Yeah it does work
Could you move your all in one grow bag to the dubtub method?
Yeah that would work.
so this may seem silly, but are there any containers is could use in place of plastic 6qt tubs that are more “aesthetic?” i get it’s not necessarily, but it would be fun i think
Definitely! It would be fun to experiment with unique containers 🍄
I know the idea is to stay as sterile as possible but do they need to be kept in a sterile environment to grow in the dub tub phase as well? Like by a flow hood or in an SAB? or can it sit on top of my fridge?
They do not need a sterile environment while fruiting
Hi I have another question for you! Does this tub method need a specific environment like the greenhouse you built in your other video? Does it need regulated humidity and air exhaust? If I plan to do it in a basement where light is low should I get LED strips?
Thank you so much for your response :)
You don’t need any grow tents or special environment, the tub provides the environment and you provide fresh air by fanning it 3-5 times per day and replenishing moisture on the top of the bin. Yes 1-2 LED strips in the basement is perfect.
@@SporenSprout Thank you so much for your answer
instead of using the clear bin and lining it with black garbage bag could we just use a coloured bin but still with the clear lid ?
That would probably work
Does the jar need light during the inoculation phase???
No it doesn’t matter
Hey do you put your tubs in a room that keeps temperature & humidity at desired levels? How much airflow do you need & how do you build a room with the right set up? Any vids on it?
No the tub provides humidity. Just keep it in a normal room that’s room temperature. 3 times per day fan and mist
I heard you only should mist the walls and lid. I dont know why but they say do not spray water on top of the mushrooms. I dont know the reasoning behind them saying do not spray water on top of the shrooms.
@@tedkravos7129 the reasons I've heard for not spraying the mushrooms (or mycelium) directly are 1) because they are fragile and even the water droplets can bruise them, and 2) I think it was something about mushrooms will soak up water really fast, and too much water directly on them can increase contamination risk? This one I'm not sure about.
I think I heard that 1) is less of an issue if you use an ultra-fine mister. Don't quote me on 2) though cuz I'm really hazy on that one.
@@MissBlackMetal I wonder if there's another way to keep them humidified - like if you are gone for a few days?
After mixing the substrate and grain spawn together, do you have to add any moisture?
No
At 4:33 what is the golden stuff on the mushrooms? For I have noticed the same on some of my grows.
It’s normal metabolites
thanks!@@SporenSprout
Hey man. When shrooms start appearing but notnyet ready to pick, do you still fan and mist 3 times a day until its ready for harvest ?
Yes but just mist the top tub
Omg, I just realized how deceiving Pioppini can be. Excellent }:-)
Have you ever just went straight to inoculation of the subtraight right in the tub you plan on growing in
The mycelium will be overwhelmed by normal fungi, mold, and yeast around us everywhere. In the jars or bags they have no competition.
How many hours of light do you put the fruiting mushrooms under the LED Strip? What the name of the led light you use and wattage is it? And do you keep the dub stub in full dark at the very first stage when you waiting for the pins to show up?
12 hours
