    For anyone without a convenient Toyota parts dealer nearby, I performed this service at home and used Valvoline’s new Extended Protection Full Synth ATF. It’s a grey jug and it now lists Toyota WS.

    Just finding your channel and GX470 content and loving the detail, thorough cleaning, and full video coverage of what you’re doing. I’m in between a novice DIY’er and where I’ll take most of these bigger items to an offroad Lex/Toy specialist. Your videos make it all seem doable. Keep the videos coming!

    Good job. I just do a spill and fill ever 30k, which I think is spec'ed in the manul. I think it is adding conditioners back into the fluid that are lost over time. Assin transmissions in toyota trucks have been known to last a long time with no maintenance.

    I'm not at your level and I knew u would have a transmission oil pan gasket leak after this maintenance so I skipped replacing the transmission filter part. I ran a fill tube through the engine bay down to the fill plug, so didn't have to use a pump. Took about 12-14 quarts to do the flush and it got rid of my transmission shudder and saved my torque converter. OBD tool worked on my FJ for the temp/overflow check.

      A highly recommend taking that extra step and going ahead and dropping the pan. In my 03 with 210,000 had a horrible whining sound and also eventually quit going into gear all together. Come to find out that my filter was completely clogged with tons of gunk. So I replace the solenoid and then change my filter gasket put everything back damn thing shifts like butter now no problems over a year now

    Consider changing the wiring when you do this. Even if it isn't leaking through capilary action into the ECU yet it is only a matter of time on some GX470's

    If everything goes right tomorrow I will be picking one of these up with 136k miles on it tomorrow. Not sure if the trans has ever been serviced.
    I don’t like the flush procedure even though I know it’s the correct way.
    I’m going to drain the 5 quarts and just add 5 quarts. Drive about 1000miles and do it again. And then do that one more time after another 1000.miles.
    I did this with my last car and the fluid was fairly clean the last time.

    Please review your protocol on doing a flush on high mileage vehicles. This protocol is not for every car and can lead to issues with transmission not shifting after doing a full flush.

    How is the transmission doing after the flush? Is it changing gear properly and no slipping? Because I heard that on high mileage transmission it is kind of risky to do a whole flush due to taking away the clutch particles with the fluid.

      Lucky asf bro I got one with 152k nothing wrong supposedly,
      had it for 3 months woke up one day transmission started to slip & the next week it was dead.
      So that put a bad taste in my mouth with Toyota/Lexus in general. I know it’s been used but history was good & no rust & had been in FL its whole life.
      Now 10k in the hole with a truck that’s worth 1k maybe.
      So yeah. Keep them fingers crossed.

      @@josephg.8919did some one before you or did you do full flush on transmission or case transfer or front/rear differential? If, yes, it could be the problem. Watch some car care nut videos. Sorry bro ....fell your pain. I heard you can go back and put some portion of that old fluid to get your transmission back online. I know it sounds counter intuitive, just watch the videos. Cheers!

    I keep hearing it can be risky to drain and fill the transmission fluid.. a local mechanic recommended I not do it. He said “we had one drive in and replaced it at owners request and it locked up and didn’t drive out.” Obviously you chose to do it so I’d be curious on your thought process? Have loved watching this gx470 project you’ve done btw. Very skilled

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's a common concern when it comes to automatic transmission fluid servicing. I'm always in favor of replacing fluid, regardless of age or mileage. I wouldn't advise pressure flushing, but a regular drain and refill is not going to cause damage. I suspect most of these types of horror stories are the result of pressure flushing, overfilling, or using the wrong fluid.
      Every make/model of automatic transmission has a unique drain/fill process and often requires a specific type of fluid. It's honestly a lot more complicated than I think many shops give it credit for, and therefore the service is performed incorrectly and ultimately the transmission gets damaged.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I had no service history for the GX, and based on the fluid color, I'd bet it had never been changed. It had 241,000 miles when I changed it.
