- Photographing a glass can seem difficult but with a little know how it an be easier than you imagine, some very simple techniques can be used for stunning results.
In some case one light on a background can lead to ultra professional results.
A single glass or a group of glasses requires the same lighting technique, once this is understood you will find that this lighting technique will help with many types of photography. This tutorial shows a slightly different way of lighting, although as you will see it is still very simple, with this type of product shot you will be able to add a lot of interest to images that normally would be very average photographs. It's a technique that is perfect for a beginner photographer because of the minimal equipment needed.
The more I watch your Still photo videos the more I find myself heading in that direction as a photographer. I think I'll give this one ago even though I don't have a snoot. Thank you
Thank you . Your comment means a lot to me, I'm really pleased you like the vids. thank you again.
Phill
Thanks Phil, I've just spent the last two weeks trying to shoot some crystal which a friend had cut. While extremely frustrating, I have learnt a lot about light and reflection. Shame I hadn't come across your tutorials beforhand. As a researcher of teaching styles/methods may i highly commend your style and subject knowledge.
Many thanks, John
Second.
Another first class tutorial Phil, thank you very much and thank you for taking the time to produce these top quality lessons.
Russ.
Thanks , I'll be doing another portrait one in August, I'm glad the others help.
Phill
Thank you so much for that super comment, I'm glad your finding them interesting.
You sir are really good, and I'm learning so much from your videos. By the way, you might find it interesting, that after years of internet usage and watching online videos, yours are the first ones that I ever subscribed to! Please keep adding :)
I have an assignment for photography to shoot glass, think ill try something similar to this, thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you for another interesting and helpful video.
Thank you, so much I'm gad you enjoy them.
This is what I appreciate about your videos Phill, is the simplicity of the set-up and detailed, but not too detail (if you know what I mean) explanations! Thanks a lot and I want to try it at home, if I succeed, you will see my photo at Itchy ;)
Amazing shot)
We enjoy the video so much
great stuff phil
interesting.... thanks for sharing !
great vid phill, i have just bought a second hand 50d and it does not have a hd movie mode, but on line ive seen that you can get magic lantern firmware which allows you to do hd movies and also monitor audio, could you do a video on this?
It depends totally on the speed the water is moving but around 1500 should do it although fast moving splashes can take 2500 to stop.
Thanks for the prompt reply,, I have more flashes so I will try that.I tried it with 2 flashes at lowest power 128th. what I was wanting was '''If I didn't want to use the flash just the softboxes of which I have 3 to use,,,What shutter speed would I need using softboxes to freez the motion,, I have just used 1/400 and it didn't freez the motion,,, thanks again for the promp reply....Jimmy
Hello Phillip,
I thoroughly enjoy your photography tutorials. I am an avid learner and even though I am starting quite late in life the joy is immense. I thought I would shed some light (punster --> me) on the banding the snoot caused. I think it might have been because of the properties of light. Around sharp edges it bends and forms shadows. I may be incorrect in assuming so, but thought I will just say so. There was a small documentary in India where no one is able to ascertain the shadow formed inside the temple of Sri Chhaya Somalingeswara. None of the pillars singularly form that shadow, dead in the centre and back of the temple. It is this that struck me while watching the video as to why the snoot was causing the banding.
Sachin Ghodke The banding is made a lot worse because of the 8 bit effect on a 16 bit file it virtually disappears, you are right about the cause though, I would normally just add a very fine spun (heatproof diffuser) over the snoot if it was really bad
Beautiful work! 🙂
Thankyou sir
Keep the hard working
Cheers phill, I think I'll just stick to the Flashes, I ain't gona get that kind of light with 3 softboxes.. and I don't want to use iso 1600, or maybe try outside tday, (its sunny) yeha,, Thanks again for your vids, they are both educational and entertaining, (in a nutty kind of way).....Jimmy
Great Phill
First!
Always wanted to say that, just to see what happens..
Waiting...
Hi Phill,,Quick question, I have been shooting water splashes with fruit in a glass ect, using external flash (sb800),, I'm trying it with two soft boxes, got my shutter speed up to 1/400th iso 400, f5.6...the motion still is not freezing as it does with flash,,,,What shutter speed do I need to freez motion dead !! ? I use D90...Please,,,,,Big big thanks....Jimmy
The thing to do is to up your iso to 1600 iso and shoot at 1600th of a second @f5.6 and see if it stops the motion, if that works you will need 4 times the amount of light to shoot with 400 ISO, it's all trial and error I'm afraid.
clever usage of using fish eye lens
1/250 + 1 (better 3) Speedlight flashgun ( sb is fine ).
keep the flash quite close to the subject ( 10 - 30 cm )
Keep the Flashgun power to 1/16 or even lover ( 1/32 )
You will obtain a very fast fire ( but not very powerfull )
I don't know if is the best solution but it worked for me.
hope this will help ;-)
all the best
Hi Phillip, Had to watch this without sound, so may have missed you mentioning this. But would it have not looked more natural shooting the decanter from halfway up to keep it looking square? This would have also given you a reflection on the glass and meant not having to add one in with photoshop later?
+David Wilson Sounds working fine for me David, as you said it could have been done straight on but it's an instructional video about how to shoot it for this result at this angle.
Hello Philip
Should you be interested, you could fix the banding appearing on video by adding a 50% gray later on soft light or overlay and add noise to it. 2 to 5% usually works well for me...
Not sure if it will help you 6 years post facto but hey...
Thanks for the informative video, I really enjoyed it.
Never late to those GEM videos, I love the info and knowledge he possesses and it is intriguing to listen to the lovely intros he has before diving into his knowledge and experience.
Hi Phillip,
I was looking during the holiday season through your instructional video's.
This one was of interest, because of the trestle you are using for your workbench.
Are these somehere to buy?
Have a great 2015.

Thanks, I wouldn't look there ...
