WTF? Xu XIn on a whole new level. At first I thought: Oh, Fan Zhendong has improved a lot on his forhand and footworks. But no way to win against the well set up killer strokes by Xu Xin.
XX is improving his close up skills and no longer relying so much on the big spin game. This helped finally overcome Samsonov last year.

great match XX played incredibly well this tournament!
FZD is a powerful and fast player. But XX outran and overpowered him. And XX's short and deceptive serves neutralized FZD's low and usually effective BH flips. XX's serves set up quite a few 3rd ball kills like the point he won in game five when trailing 9:10. XX's long FH strokes produced more spins. Fantastic match!

Seemed like to me Xu Xin was getting pinned down on his backhand (which isn't the best compared to say Wang Hao) less than usual. He was running around balls more and living on that forehand which is the best in the business. Did the same thing vs Ma Long in the final also.

***** Well receiving a service short like the one that Fzd did there, he left his backhand angle was open to Xx to consequently hit in that area that was open to attack, so that was what he did :)
pingubaba generally, players prefer to hit cross-court since it involves less risk in their attacks. Fan knew that he could cover more of Xu's possible angles of attack by being in the middle of where he prefers to hit
