      It's not really so different to a team holding out to pit later in case there's a safety car and taking advantage of that.
      It's a bit naff yes, but you can't say it isn't deserved when it's totally within the rules, and that any of the other teams were open to do exactly the same thing in exactly the same way. They just chose to pit when they did.
      If all the teams had done it, or if the red flag came before the pit stops happened and everyone changed tyres, is it still unfair?
      They just got super lucky with the timing of the red flag, simple as that really.

    Awesome video, I seen a post on Reddit about the pace of all Motorsport and SuperFormula is just amazing and so overlooked. Second quickest cars in all forms of motorsport, even above LMP1 cars and IndyCars. They should be tied with Indycar in terms of qualification for the Super License. IndyCar makes sense to be so high because even though according to that reddit post they are roughly 12-13% slower than F1 the math was taken from Indycar at COTA on a damp quali, they still are quicker just slightly over F2 and LMP1 cars. IndyCar aslo races on all forms of tracks, from circuits like COTA, To Superspeedways like Indy where they fly around 235mph(380kmh), then do street circuits like Long Beach or St. Pete, and then also do short 1 mile oval races too. They race everywhere and the car is insanley fast and a handful. But I feel strongly that SuperFormula should offer similar or even the same qualifactions as Indy.

      @@VehicleValhalla The way I see it is that SF offers less points due to the season being so short. If they were to expand the series to more races per season I could see a reason to increase the SL points given, but with only 7-8 races a season it's just not enough experience to earn a full SL from, not to mention not as much of what can be learned in SF is directly translatable to F1 as it is in F2 where they race on the same circuits with the same tire manufacturer. Great video by the way 👍

    • @VehicleValhalla

      To be honest I'm not quite sure! Looking at the variety of drivers and the status of the series both in Japan and internationally, I would take a guess and say that it's a bit of both as it can be in F1 with "pay drivers". For example, perhaps top tier established drivers such as Kobayashi would get paid, whereas drivers who are still on their journey up to F1, such as Vips would have to pay to enter, either out of their own pocket, or funded by sponsors/junior programmes. There seems to be a conflict of intetest between FIA and their margins with the regulation of their series and not giving proper SL points to drivers competing in SF. It seems that they are nerfing people from getting SL points there and forcing them to go To F3 and F2.

    • @VehicleValhalla
      @VehicleValhalla  Před 3 lety

      Yeah it definitely seems to be one of the factors. Also visible with Formula Renault series receiving fewer SL points.
      A good point mentioned by another viewer was that the lower SL points allocation for SF could partially be due to the fact that there are significantly fewer races. Looking at pre-covid in 2019, SF had a 7 race reason whereas F2 had 12 rounds with 24 races!

  • @andrewmetcalfe9898
    @andrewmetcalfe9898 Před 3 lety

    I’m surprised that the series only has 7 races, and only one race per meet weekend. Surely 2 to 3 races per weekend would make more sense? Perhaps if they made it slightly more international - say with race weekends in Australia, China, India and/or Indonesia for example would see the series elevated to the same super licence points allocations as F2 and Indycar. As an Australian, I’d like to see this formula used as our premier open wheeler category, with a few races doubling up on the international super formula championship.

    • @RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts
      @RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts Před 3 lety +2

      Highly unlikely to leave Japan for couple reasons. As said in the video, the team budgets are likely to be in the range of only a few million dollars, given that they run a single chassis and engine choice, so its very accessible as a series for smaller local companies like Mugen and Tom's etc to run teams. Also, since most those companies are domestic market, they are really only concerned about exposure and marketing to Japanese consumers rather than international ones. So with small team budgets and backed by local companies, there's little to justify the large increase in logistics cost going international outside their consumer market and having to compete then with F1/2/3 for popularity. Its comfortable where it sits in its niche.
      Of course, this means nothing to the drivers. It is a fantastic open wheel series, and drivers coming into it don't have to worry about landing on a team that can't afford to be competitive, since all the cars are identical. This means it's all about the driver which is why it attracts so much talent. Thats really the main attraction versus the intentional roster of iconic courses like F1 has.

    • @andrewmetcalfe9898
      @andrewmetcalfe9898 Před 3 lety

      @@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts I ‘get’ all those points, but for starters, Australia has really struggled to have a premier open wheeler category for over 40 years. Super Formula would seem to be an ideal solution.
      Secondly, an Asian Pacific series - incorporating a couple of the Japanese rounds and Australian rounds but adding some stand alone races in Macau, NZ and mainland China for example would be great.
      Even if most - or all - the Japanese Super Formula teams chose not to race internationally, that doesn’t mean that the formula itself would not have more universal application. Especially given the budget caps to keep costs down, yet still allow top class open wheeler racing in 600bhp+ cars. In fact, one could make an argument for Super-formula to replace the cars in GP2 s well.
      Lastly, the budget caps do not explain why racing is restricted to one race per round. In that regard Super Formula could take a lead out of GP2 racing.

    S-Formula engines are a lot closer to 700bhp these days.
    There are no 'official' numbers. The 2.0t engines are shared with SuperGT GT500 class. With fuel flow restrictions in GT500, it's often said they're about 650bhp currently.
    The fuel restrictions are generally harder in SuperGT, nobody knows for sure what they are in Super Formula.
    But it's not a coincidence that Nissan is an engine supplier in GT500, while even the historically Nissan teams in S-Formula have dropped them as a supplier.
    In other words, the BoP in GT500 is keeping Nissan relevant, and the restrictions are less in Super Formula.

      That’s actually a very good point - didn’t think of it when making the video! It takes a lot more skill to sustain a high level for a much longer calendar e.g F2. Also, the FIA has a history of favouring their own series that they want to promote when it comes to super licence points. For example, they gave Formula Renault championships far fewer points than the FIA certified equivalents, making them less attractive to potential racers.
