    I used to work for NS for a while, and found a 1980's K5LA with snow cones on it. Asked the yard manager if he would sell it, as it was fouled. He sold it to me for $50. I took it home, cleaned it, bought a new diaphragm, and made it sound almost exactly like yours. I mounted it on my 2011 Dodge Ram (diesel) so I can give stupid drivers a heads-up =P

    That 2011 K5LA sounds alright for a modern horn! Most of these modern K5LA's don't sound all that great. 1980's one is the best one though. Really LOVE the M5! 😊

    The 80's k5la is literally music to my ears. Sounds like it was off of an aem-7, or an f40.

    The 80s vintage K5LA is what I remember most, they sounded the best (for a K5 I guess). Everything now just makes noise.
    Nothing beats an M5.

  • @NathanH5
    @NathanH5 Před 12 lety +1

    2011 K5LA is musically the best. The #4 bell dominates, the #5 is very strong as it should be, and the #3&4 slightly sharp so the horn sounds more like the old M5. This is the way we wanted the horn and the railroads all like it. The 1990's K5LA is muddy in comparison, flat #3&5 and too large a sequence between the #1&2. The 1980's K5LA would be great, but the #3 bell is too dominant. Bell dominance in the K5LA chord should be: 4-5-3-2-1. The M5 has a flat #5 bell, but all M5's sound different.

      Old/New cast only applies to P horns because the tuning changed between the castings. With M and K horns, the chords never changed over the years.

      1st gens were just called K5las before the 2nd gens, the 2nd gens were introduced when Nathan produced K5las with somewhat out of tune 4a bells, the second gen horns sounded more minor than first gens, the third gen horns produced more of a round sound and was restricted, but the 3a bell would sometimes be playing at a much lower volume than the other bells or would play sharp, these horns would produce more of a major or a dominate sound.
