  • Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klauuw created the Planetarium Eise Eisinga as a tribute to science, and the watch has been recognized with the 2021 GPHG Calendar and Astronomy prize. This 40mm rose gold watch incorporates the world's smallest functional planetarium, a date, and a month indicator. The blue dial is a hand-crafted miniature oil painting, and its planetarium pays tribute to the 18th century original constructed by Eise Eisinga on the ceiling of his home. The Christian van der Klaauw Planetarium features an automatic caliber with a 96-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and astronomy-themed imagery on the gold winding rotor.

Spectacular and dramatic. That really is singular! Draws you right in. One of my favorites from this year's winners.

The dial actually resembles the wood plank ceiling into which the planetarium was built. That's why it looks like somewhat irregular oil painted. The ceiling is that same color.
