Part of what I love about your reactions is your honesty. I know there are a few thousand Pentaholics who may disagree with your assessment of Scott’s vocal choices, but you are confident in giving your opinion- popular opinion be damned. Most “reactors” are not comfortable enough to criticize the choices/arrangements/vocals because they don’t want to alienate a particular fan base. Your critiques are smart and come from a place of trying to understand/figure out what you’re listening to and I love that! And yes…both of these two can flat out saaaaang!

I'm a long time Pentaholic and when I subscribed to PTX, they had around 25k subs. That being said, Maggie was spot on with this. I would much rather have a genuine critique then yet another fangirl appraisal of Scott. He has a great voice with many colors to it. He needs to read the song and dial his voice into what he's singing.

Great reaction! I haven't commented to your reactions before, but I would like to add some things. I completely agree with your take on Scott's sound. My interpretation is he may have been holding back at the beginning in order to really accentuate the dynamics of building to the crescendo. Is it possible that for him he sounds "more up front" when he is holding back because he has such a powerful voice? With that said, you must complete the trifecta of Scott's big three duets by reacting to "Lose Us" with Rozzi Crane. This is part of her Bad Together CD from about 3 years ago. You will love it! It shows a completely different side to Scott, and Rozzi's voice is so unique. You gotta check it out!! Again, love your reactions!!

I think he is trying to sound held back or emotionally restrained with that sound. When he works with Ben or the other members of PTX they just tell him what sounds better. He likes that sound more than other people like it.

Maggie, I agree with the placement/ tone comments you made. I feel like I’ve heard him do that before when he was trying to sing quieter and maintain balance, though I can’t think what a good example would be offhand. IMO he seems to have better placement when singing louder.
As for what to watch , if you’re looking for more of these Shoshana and Scott- there’s a Superfruit episode that has Shoshana, Scott and Mitch, it’s in the same style as the Frozen video. Also, speaking of Mitch, have you watched him sing Defying Gravity? Scott sings Glinda’s part hilariously and Mitch is Mitch singing Elphaba. If you want more Scott watch “I should tell ya momma on you”. It’s older so he sounds young but it’s still good.
I enjoy your reactions, keep it up! I’d join Patreon, but I just started grad school.

I agree. I think it's either something he was taught when doing choir to bring his voice in so it doesn't outshine everyone or something he picked up from someone around them. He can sing gently in a different key without doing that same thing. When he's singing with others he often seems to fit himself where needed; I think of him as something of a chameleon because he can blend in where needed and change his tone to fit. But either it's something he thought he had to do or someone told him to do in order to hold back from the power he naturally seems to have/needs to use at that area in his range. It's like he's tensing the wrong thing up when trying to sing quieter and it pushes it to a different position. Could also be where his voice had been maturing before he'd figured out how to handle it. I'm going to be listening out for it now lol.
I will say his voice has definitely matured in the last 2-3 years, so idk if he got a new vocal coach. But there was an episode of his & Rozzi's podcast (it may actually have been he one with Shoshana on, I'm not sure, but the whole series is worth listening too, honestly) where he talks about learning to use his voice more efficiently because he always used to give 110% and it was fatiguing his nvocal cords with the amount of touring, I suspect it was a bad habit he developed for the Sing-off when he put so much pressure on himself for them to stand out. So he was talking about learning to reduce the intensity but improving the technique. It's called _Ugh! You're So Good! _ and I can't recommend it enough they have some incredibly interesting people on it along with the two of them just being hilarious and interesting together.

I often think when Scott does a duet, that he has a tendency to hold back so his partner shines brighter. I just don't think he sings with his ego.

totally agree - and he's never identified himself as a show-tunes vocalist - I think it's wonderful that he collabs with artists outside his "pocket", encouraging mutually beneficial cross over

    • @eri444
      @eri444 Před 2 lety +1

That is possible, but of all duet partners, he most certainly does not need to hold back for Shoshana Bean (who in my opinion is one of the best female vocalists out there right now)-- they both have outrageous voices, but I would put my money on Shoshana in terms of sheer power. Personally, I think most of Scott's tendencies are learned stylistic behaviors -- he has a tendency to raise his larynx, singing on thinner vocal folds with a narrowed twangy sound. My guess is he started off singing musical theater and adapted his voice towards a more Justin Timberlakey sound when he realized he enjoyed singing R&B and pop runs, giving him the stylistic choices he makes today. That type of style wouldn't suit "The Prayer" so he adapted his sound to fit that song.

I am not a musician, but I hear Shoshanna doing the same thing Scott does with his...bring the vocal forward into a nasally place in parts. I know exactly what you mean about Scott's voice. Scott has been singing his whole life and I have a strong suspicion that he does this not because someone taught him, but because that is a stylistic choice that he's made in the process of discovering "his voice" throughout the years. I feel like what you mentioned is an opinion, a very valid one. I can see how someone could be turned off by that. But, the way you said it made it sound a bit condescending towards Scott. Like, he doesn't know better and he's actually doing something wrong. Like it was a mistake instead of a choice. That's how it felt to me. Still love your reactions!

He just lifted his larynx added a bit of twang to lighten the sound as to not come in way too strong on his verse and give the song somewhere to go dynamically. Had he done it softly but with his full on tone it wouldn’t have suited that section as nicely it would’ve sounded heavier. Scott is a soul singer. Regardless of genre lines. That boy has soul! It’s all about playing with tones and sounds. Not everything needs to be in the same tone or in heavy full on tones all the time. Granted I’m not a huge pentatonix fan. I like them but I don’t and won’t go out of my way to listen to them like at all. But he clearly has amazing technique. And everyone of course can grow technically speaking. But let’s let people express the music as well without everything needing to be technical. Also shoshana sings in the same forward and nasal placement sometimes so I think it’s more of you don’t like his tone when he does it vs her. No hate here at all by the way. I love you and your content. Just wanted to give my opinion.

Thanks for that breakdown. I've had the same thoughts about Scott's voice but didn't have the musical language to articulate it, even to myself. On the whole I think his voice has developed well over time but he has one other habit which I find grates a little, not just with him but with others whom I've heard it in over my whole life and it has always caused an inner cringe every time I hear it. Again language becomes a barrier in explaining it but I would describe it as inserting an 'h' before his vowels. It feels like an affectation. It's a minor thing and probably peculiar to myself because I like his voice in enough other respects that it doesn't stop me enjoying him. Mitch also does it sometimes but it feels to me that it's more intentional when he does it - a choice for colouration rather than a characteristic and it doesn't break the flow for me in the same way. Then again, maybe I'm just weird. Well there's no maybe about it but I mean in this particular case.

OH MY GOD, THANK YOU. I love Scott. LOVE. His tone can be so bloody gorgeous but there's this spot in his upper range that when he needs to be quiet he goes into that nasally tone you noted. It's gotten better in recent years, but I also think that he's being set differently in Pentatonix's arrangements to take advantage of his belt and the tone in his lower register. I also think in this particular performance he overdid the runs in that first verse. Shoshana was quite restrained with her adlibs and it just felt a bit off. My two cents!

He definitely chooses that lighter sound. I think maybe even sometimes himself likes to sound lighter. I can always tell when he does it but he sounds SO good in his natural baritone ranges. Whether just low notes or his belting. His tone there is perfect. Same reason why I think he avoids singing in a mix belt. Generally he sings chesty or head. Very rarely does he mix much in his belts. Only the Waving Through The Window have I heard him mix. The quality is lighter and not his style as much

The thing Scott did here that drives me nuts is the hand-gesturing. I know a capella singers tend to do a lot of needless hand gestures because they don't have instruments, maybe, and it looks kind of lame to just stand there and sing? But look at Shoshana and her meaningful gestures, over her heart, reaching out, etc....more like someone who's done Broadway and has to act with her whole body instead of sing a capella. Maybe? I dunno. But it really stood out in this song to see him be the ONLY one doing it instead of all five Pentatonix doing it. :)

Scott is literally known for his hand gestures when he sings, he can't help himself. It must have killed him to keep his hands still in the Say Something video (he was holding onto that chair for dear life as he is so used to singing with his hands).

Maggie… I wonder why Shoshana chose to sing with Scott instead of sooo many other amazing singers. Surely she knows his styles and flaws but loves his passion and that he is different from a classical singer. Perfectly performed songs often lack interest and can be boring to the listener. Can explain why many classical singers can’t sell their music and come and go. Scott has been around 11 years and continues to get better and better. He touches my soul. So does Shoshana.

Sorry, but to my ears, Ms. Bean is out of tune most of the time. Good female singers to me ... Eva Cassidy (RIP), Rebecca Lovell , Natalia Tsarikova and/or Stefani J.A. Germanotta, among others.
