- In this video, I show three of the bad endings of Riven, particularly those bad endings that involve opening the Star Fissure prematurely.
In the next (and final) video, I will show the bad endings that involve the prison book.
The big dagger at 0:53 was supposed to be made in live action, so Cyan got a replica built, but they later made the scene in CG. The real dagger was actually made by Adam Savage, from Mythbusters. Cyan still has the dagger hanging on a wall in their office building.
TheLozfan123 Awesome, thanks for the trivia!
Holy shit!
As a kid I loved both Riven and Mythbusters
It's implied that they are other ages connected to the fissure (iirc this was said in the first novel). Gehn also mentions tracking them in his journal but he doesn't know what they are.
Earth is an Age to the D'ni. In fact, it *is* D'ni. The D'ni cavern is located on Earth. And as we learn in Uru, the D'ni came to Earth from a dying world called Garternay, and it was a guy named Ri'neref who wrote the Book of Earth (aka the Book of D'ni).
Myst bad endings are great at making you feel like a complete idiot. I think Atrus reaction when you don't bring the page in the first game is the best though.
FOOL.
Where are the donuts?!
Atrus literally facepalms.
"UGH.....Did you not take my warning seriously??”
“Welcome to D'ni....you and I will live here...forever."
I think the first ending is supposed to be the "coward's ending" - instead of risking entering the prison book, you abandon the quest and jump into the fissure.
Thank you for a great series. I played Riven when it came out. This was a heartfelt and poignant trip down memory lane. Thank you!
It's funny... on my first playthrough of this game, I used a walkthrough my mom had used since I was basically a stupid kid. So, I ended up saving Catherine because that's what the guide told me to do.
However, for some reason or another, on my second playthrough ( several years later), I didn't use the guide so I forgot to save her. Atrus's face and monologue after realizing Catherine was going to die really choked me up. I kept saying "I'm sorry! I forgot I was supposed to go save her!"
Atrus is remarkably calm and patient with you in the ending where you don't save Catherine. If I were him I'd probably be livid that this moron I trusted doomed my wife for no apparentl reason.
Given that we're mute, Atrus might assume the Catherine is already dead. We saw in his journal that he was holding back fears about that.
I love the part about the irony of Gehn grabbing the Prison book by mistake.
It would be funny, except Atrus dropped the prison book on the ground when he was shot, so unless Atrus had a second prison book in his bag, Gehn definitely grabbed the real linking book.
@benaniman1 Because there are five buttons, and the combination can use the same button more than once, there are in fact 5^5 = 3125 possible combinations. Yeah, the odds are against you guessing it, but it could happen. Too bad the odds aren't exactly one in a million, because one in a million chances crop up nine times out of ten. :-)
There were two funny things I noticed in the 2nd bad ending:
1) Gehn motions towards Cho like "All right, let's finish up here,"
2) He looks like Count Olaf from a series of unfortunate events, when the wind's blowing in his hair. So fitting for a madman!
"i didnt feel like rescuing catherine, i was tired." lol i laughed so freakin hard that was great hahahaha
@iNEXSERTiON No, the actual universe is the infinite universe. :P
What the star fissure is exactly is never explained, because Atrus himself doesn't really understand it.
I have a theory- Riven's decay had reached the stage where it should have already broken apart and fell into the fissure. You can see this when Gehn and Catherine comment on it in their journals.
Suppose we see this 'desire to decay' as a natural force- it must have been building up over time, else the age would have been stabilized when Gehn covered the fissure. When the object resisting this force moved everything was pushed through. Essentially, a different kind of "pressure".
It was Atrus keeping it stable which is why at the end of the first game he says he cannot stop his writing to thank you as properly as he would like.
Riven was never truly stable to begin with because it was not written properly so you are correct that it's natural force was the desire to decay.
@spikew10 There is no difference in resolution between the CD and DVD version. Both are 640x480. The only difference is that the animations' position has been fixed, and you don't need to swap CDs.
I find it both scary and facinating that the music in the first one is Gehns theme even though he doesnt appear. and no monologue from Atrus at all.. really mysterious. It fits good just like Atrus theme and the Fissure theme.
"I didn't want to rescue Catherine. I didn't feel like it."
LOL poor Atrus!
@halomasterchief14 They could have, but no one knew that. For all they knew, the fissure could've lead to horrible pain and agony and death.
I gotta say, though, Dilandau, for all your mid-sentance pauses, they and your voice combined make you sound sorta like an archaeologist, which is kinda fitting for the Myst series. Solving puzzles and exploring an ancient civilization.
That actually gives me an idea for a new title for your Let's Play:
Dilandau Jones and the Raiders of the lost Linking Book ^^
I started playing this game 13 years ago, today i finished it :-D
@Lizzardman666 It's randomly generated at the beginning of the game. So after you get the combination, you can restore an earlier save game (from the same game) and it will work.
@spikew10 In the PC CD version, all the animations are diplayed 1 pixel lower than they should be. So if e.g. you press a button, it will jump down one pixel for the animation and then jump back when the animation finishes.
@Mrgahoolefan The combination doesn't change, because that's how I did it. Alternatively, you can guess it by accident.
All that stuff falling into the fissure is going to hurt when it lands on someone's head in another world...
It's pretty cool of Atrus that despite ruining his plan he still calls you his friend.
That squeaky "ururg..niug, urng urng nurg urng" telescope has a problem sound is my very favorite sound effect from all of video game history.
Dayum son...all of vidya game history
In case there was any doubt that perhaps Gehn maybe actually had reformed... hah, yeah, no! And now we see who his grandsons took after.
01:00
Wait, no, you can hear the linking sound, he was showing up… it's only that the stranger throws him/herself in the fissure before facing him. Which is understandable considering Atrus would not be happy with what they've done
@reinux The DVD version is better anyway because it doesn't have the 1-pixel-offset video issue. :-)
There is another possible bad ending. After having captured Gehn, you can free him by taking his place in the prison-book again. He then says he doesn't know why you did this, but he thanks you anyway for enabling him to complete his task.
I don't get it! Why, in the first bad ending when you open the Star Fissure *before* going to Tay, doesn't Atrus come to Riven or make a soliloquy, yet he does do these for all the bad Star-Fissure endings *after* you go to Tay? Surely Atrus couldn't have known the difference. Did he just happen to be taking a lunch/potty break during the time of the former case? Or did the game designers simply not care to make a robust ending for that unusual case where you shouldn't have the combination?
They likely wanted to just give us a bonus ending and show that we did a good job at managing to reach it. But it is hard to imagine how it could have been different much, so they did things easy way.
Maybe the implication is that he doesn't come because so little time has passed that he felt comfortable enough to step away and take a potty break, confident nothing would happen in the mean time, and you caught him in the middle of it.
Thanks for showing us these endings Dilandau, especially that first one, I didn't know you could do that.
There's something about the telescope descending; you know once it breaks the glass something serious is going to happen.
it makes me laugh so much that atrus still calls you his friend even after you condemn his wife to death, dude please get angry at me im begging u!
"Cause I didn't feel like rescuing Catherine. I was tired." SVEN YOU JERK!!!! XD
LOL!
When I first played the game I got the ending where Ghen says 'I don't know what you THOUGHT you were doing'. And i was just like, yeah idk either. I was confused at what to do, but I had the code for the fissure, so I did what a person does in a puzzle game.
His reaction genuinely made me feel bad though.
"Wouldn't it be supreme irony if he got the prison book by mistake?"
I spit laughed at that one
It lands in our world in the middle of the desert. You see this in Myst: Uru.
Actually, the first ending happens if you leave the book with Gehn as well.
I tried that but it didn't work. The game does not let you open the cage unless Gehn is captured.
"Technically it shouldn't be possible for you to open the star fissure before going to Tay..."
Well, since there is only one combination to that cover, there is always the possibility that someone will click on the correct combination just as a guess, so, it IS possible to open the star fissure before going to Tay. For it to be impossible, the Cyan would have had to change the number combination randomly each time you play the game; like with the D'ni watch chime.
The combination is different for each player, but it is it possible that it is generated at the beginning of the game, and if you just happen to guess the one you got, it is still possible to "accidentally" open the hatch and then break the glass.
Nillie Confirmed : it's generated at the beginning of the game.
Ṩŧεåɱ Ƥøϣεʀεɗ Ɲåᵾġɧŧƴℓᵾṩ I am guessing that you have a later version of the game than I do. They must have added a code to generate a random code to later versions of Riven. But, is it still possible to guess the new combination before finishing the game? If so, you can still go through the star fissure before visiting Tay.

StasherDragon Have you tried finding the code and going back to a previous save with your version?
to guess the combination correctly without is extremely lucky and highly unlikely to get on the first try. I have tried writing down all the possible combinations and it looks like there is about over 100 possibilities for that hatch to open.
It makes more sense to complete the game properly to get the proper code.
The only reason the star fissure exists is by Ti'ana's work instilled into the riven book in order to create a bridge between Gehn's world and our own.
Something like eBay or Amazon Marketplace would probably be your best bet.
@Dilandau3000 I did notice that the resoloution (of the videos) was considerably low. But I didn't realize it was because of the CD's. Thanks. I might pick up the DVD version if I can.
Wait, what happens if you free Catherine without capturing Gehn? You could learn the password for the cage, then reload a previous save and free her, then break open the fissure. Isn't that possible? I've not seen that ending.
I tried to load an earlier saved game, as you suggested, but the code changed. I couldn't open the fissure. The same applied to the Dome combo and the Prison Island combo.
This ending also happens if you go to Gehn's age and don't use the prison book so letting him keep it. If you then do the star fissure puzzle you'll also get this ending. Probably because they didn't record Atrus NOT checking the prison book in the bad ending..
None of those endings made me want to bite my own tongue and drown in my own blood in shame like the bad Myst ending x_x
Like u said about not being able to save catherine without trapping Gehn unless you load a previous save or guess the code...is there a bad ending where u know the code without trapping him and all three of you get shot and killed?
I heard a theory that the engravings on Gehn's timepiece (presumably a relic from D'ni) are a map of Garternay; does anyone know if that's been confirmed?
Are the black spotches in the sea of stars other ages or something that simply dont have fissures? If thats so then does each age sit on the outside of the sea of stars, instead of in it like a planet does?
The explanation I've read is that the black "clouds" are various universes, and the "stars" are light coming in from outside where there are no clouds in the way. It's sort of like being among the branches of a tree, with pins of light shining in through gaps between the leaves. The void isn't "space" in the usual sense, and it's normally impossible to get to physically without some creative use of the Art.
I don't see how you can open the fissure before going to Tay. You need Catherine's journal to get the combination for the telescope. I've tried saving my game before going to Tay, getting the journal, then reload my game without saving it, but the combination was different.
BTW, did I spell "Tay" right? Or is it "Tai"?
@eruse Well Atrus is a real nice guy.
@NmdXxx I think he notices, but knows that so little time has passed, you CAN'T have defeated Ghen and rescued Catherine yet, and so doesn't link in.
So apparently you can go back to open the star fissure at the beginning, but you can't go back to rescue Catherine before trapping Gehn. I guess that's to prevent an ending where you get to see Gehn shoot both Atrus and Catherine, kill you, and escape.
I remember one time I played Riven the combination was 44444
@Dilandau3000 How do you get the combination to the telescope before you go to Tai? (Or is it "Tay"?) If you go back to the previously saved game, the combination changes. I've tried it, believe me!
@help4343 Probably because you're supposed to be shocked by Atrus' death is what I'm guessing.
i had my original riven cds in a cd storage/selector thing.
damn cheap plastic shattered half the cds inside, including most of my riven cds.
reminded me of the bad endings, sort of as if i'd lost my linking book.
so i went and got the dvd version.
Anyone else hearing the link sound just as you fall at the first ending? Wonder why that is...
i think it's supposed to imply that atrus was confused at the sudden rupture (he would've seen the disturbance through the linking panel) and linked in to check what was going on, but we bounced into the star fissure before he could arrive
You'd think that Gehn would've had a fixed stopper installed on the telescope to avoid such a cataclysm. Also, what would've happened in Gehn jumped into the star fissure?
By opening the star fissure prematurely you don't condemn anyone to death. You condemn them to be sucked into the star fissure after you... Which could make an interesting addition to the Myst series. Gehn and the rest loose in the Stranger's world, with Atrus trying to rescue Cathryn. And damn it, Atrus, stop dropping books into the fissure! Have you forgotten the commotion you caused last time!? (Myst 1)
I’m wondering how you were able to get the code to the telescope before going to the rebel age. Is there another location that has the hatch code?
No, you simply make a save file beforehand, then load it once you know the code. The code is decided when you start the game, so you can use it when loading an older save.
I wonder why, the in sad ending (capture gehn but don’t save Catherine), Atrus still calls you his friend.
Maybe Atrus assumes that the Stranger didn't understand how destructive opening the Star Fissure would be. Or maybe, with the Stranger being mute, he thinks Gehn executed Catherine, and we didn't bring her because we couldn't.
Hi Gehn. I am your forever afterlife ghost. Prepare for my revenge posession. hAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
How would you open the hatch before going to tay? Isn't the code to the hatch in Catherine's journal?
The third one was the most depressing.
I hate to say it, but the sky fissure kinda looks like a certain female body part from a distance. I'd say it was a metaphor for birth, but it's probably just coincidence.
@Zak6009 Gehn lets you go so you can retrieve the prison book.
How do you get the star fissure man hole open without Catherine's journal? Lucky guess?
I had this first ending, :P I didn't know what I did, and thought I was dying, but I guess you don't really.
Atrus grew up in the cleft so why does he have the d'ni goggles?
@Dilandau3000 1-pixel-offset?
Riddle me this then, since the other two were asked, what happens if you go to the 233rd age before getting the prison book?
Here I am to answer your question 11 years later: Gehn tells you to go get "the book that was stolen from you" and bring it to him.
what is the star fissure
@eruse I think he isn't happy so he doesn't thank you he just trow you off this world
But i also love Akenar
Perhaps Atrus is the issue. I mean both his sons and his father are in a prison age? Maybe he was just a bad father/son. Lol jk i love atrus.
The first ending seemed like it was made it a hurry, probably because the desginers realized atrus looking in the prison book without one would be illogical. I think I even hear the start of the sound of Atrus linking it
