Ok, so here's the missing bad ending you people keep pestering me about. :) We refuse to use the prison book once too often, and Gehn doesn't like that at all.
There's one more bad ending... Trap yourself in the book after meeting Gehn (but of course you don't have the book when you first meet him) Gehn will then use Cho to swap and you'll come out. Gehn then shows you the book except his look is a bit different, like "what were trying to do" glare instead of "do you get how this book works?" studying look He then puts the book down and shoots you whilst saying, "I see you've found the book. Thank you. But unfortunately circumstances have changed...."
I watched all your videos of Let's play Riven and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to record and put them on here. I love the game but don't have the time to invest. Thanks again for allowing me to experience Riven. P.S. you do an awesome job narrating. Super funny sometimes =]
Your entire series was fantastic. Your style of commentary was perfect for me. I loved this and Myst for it's serene visuals and the tricky puzzles, and never really got far through either. Thanks for the series!
TBH if Myst 4 had better acting it would have been one of the best games in the series; the storytelling and puzzles were on par with all of the others. It's just a shame.
At least he said "Please." If there is one thing that's good about his character is that he shows good manners, but that's all he has to show for himself and everything else he tells you about this 'sanctuary' is a ploy to depart from his failed ages. He has no intention of bringing anyone from Riven, it's all false and it is clear he wishes to start with a fresh perspective to create a newly designed age with exact elements to make more linking books for his new D'ni Empire he so wishes to make
@VanillaLimeCoke The code for Catherine's cage is not generated until you look at the timepiece in Gehn's room on the 233rd Age. It's not possible to release Catherine before trapping Gehn.
There is definitely another ending but it's really not that different. Go to Gehn before getting the book back from the Moiety Age. He'll ask you to recover the book. You then go get the book, return to Riven and then use it to trap yourself before seeing Gehn. You'll then get the ending where the Cho guy touches the book to bring you out, you appear in the cage, and Gehn shoots you. Only this time his speech is a bit different as you die.
@VanillaLimeCoke That doesn't work. The code isn't generated until you look at the time piece. If you restore an earlier game, the code doesn't work. I tried this when recording the bad endings, so I know it doesn't work, at least not in the DVD version of the game (which is what I'm using).
Man look at how clouded with anger Gehn's face is at 4:35. And this game was made in 1997. No wonder why it's such a huge hit. Awesome graphics for 1997.
It's spooky watching this as I've just got to the part in Book of Atrus where Atrus and Gehn have arrived in Kveer and Atrus doesn't quite know what to make of his father.
After freeing Catherine and you take too much time getting back to Gehn's study to link back to Temple Island, all the books have the link pages ripped out and the cage is up..
I took this ending when I first played Riven - against my better judgement. I was dead set on going into the prison book; I thought Gehn was going to undoubtedly see that I was trapped and refuse to follow. Probably because I failed that way in Myst when I first completed Achenar's book and traded places with him...
There is still one more; go to Tay before meeting Ghen, get Catherine's journal and then open the fissure. Ghen will say "I don't know who you are but.... blah blah blah" after killing Atrus
Just look at the cliffs and the size of them in the Age 233. I mean: If I whould be called to walk up all the way 3 times for no reason just to be trolled I would be angry too XD.
@Dilandau3000 Yep, just read it in a guide that even if you guessed all combinations it still won't work. I'm guessing the ending where Cathetine is saved w/o trapping Gehn is just a rumor or perhaps an ending that was considered but the developers didn't include it in the final cut of the game. But if it is out there I'd love to see it.
This was the path I took, only instead of refusing I did touch the book. I suppose I got a little nervous when he came barging in all pissed off with that poison dart gun lol Anyway, worked out good in the end. Yay! :o) Thanks for all your hard work Sven you make very good Videos and are a great teacher. Much Health and Happiness to you and yours :o)
@Dilandau3000 Ok. Actually you are right. The time piece in his cellar does change each load even if it's the same game. I just verified it myself after trapping Gehn and guessing the code and then received a different speech from Catherine. I could have sworn I trapped Gehn and then entered the same code rescuing Catherine before even using the cellar. I guess it is possible to guess the code but that's like 3^5 possibilities.
Anyone knows what happens if you complete the fire marble puzzle prior to going to tey and visit the 223rd age? The reason I ask this is because you'd be seeing Gehn before getting the prison book back. I just wonder what he would want with you if he doesn't see you having a "linking book" back to D'ni in your possesion?
I don't remember for sure but I think he talks about the book and then tells you to go and get it or something, I'm not quite sure though. (and it's Tay :) )
I just had this problem this evening, I paid much too little attention to the story so I went to visit him and Catherine once each, then opened the star fissure and got the worst ending. Ooooopsssss (and yeah it's just an odd version of the same speech where he tells you to bring it to him, and DEFINITELY not to free Catherine)
@thetopcrusader2 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's another one. I've played the game myself, but it's been a little while so I've kind of forgotten, but logically that has to be another ending.
i had that one happen to me on my first playtrough, but it was because my mouse was screwy and didn't worked properly. i think i was around 12 back in the day... took me forever to beat the game!
@Dilandau3000 Yes, you won't free her, but it is possible to see her before trapping Gehn. Save the game before calling Gehn. Call Gehn go through the book and when you come back out write the code down in his bedroom. Go back to the earlier game and then refuse to enter the book. After Gehn leaves go to the prison and enter the code. Catherine will see you but notice something is up saying stuff like, "Gehn is waiting for you to make a mistake." More amazing is that if you go back and trap
Tim Serpell I was thinking something else back then. I thought the code would still work if you went to an earlier save file but no. The code is only generated once you trap Gehn.
@sailor11sedna Do you have a video of this or know where on is? If so, where? I'd like to see it. I've tried doing on the iPhone version but it won't work. But what troubles me is after refusing to enter the book the 2nd time Gehn says I'm free to go but yet I still remain in the cage. I haven't played the PC version and I do believe what you say because I think I saw it once on another video long ago.
Bump on that 9th ending he missed where you already visited gehn once, returned from Tay with the prison book and imprison yourself. I see you've already mentioned it 7 months ago. If he records that one the collection will be complete. Cheers.
@@Dilandau3000 Thank you Sven. I loved playing Riven back in the day, but it took me weeks, and swapping CDs was tedious. I still have the 3 novels, when nostalgia strikes I will read them again.
I've seen another. Somehow you free Catherine without trapping Gehn (perhaps guessing the code to her chamber when you visit her after refusing his first offer to use the trap book). So then you go signal Atrus, Catherine relocates the villagers, Atrus and Catherine reunite, and... Gehn somehow makes it in time to kill everyone.
Wait, but I thought the passcode for Catherine's cell was only generated AFTER looking at Gehn's timepiece...? I know it's a nine year old comment, but I have to know if there's another ending! 😂
I love how annoyed Gehn is the third time you visit him.
There's one more bad ending...
Trap yourself in the book after meeting Gehn (but of course you don't have the book when you first meet him)
Gehn will then use Cho to swap and you'll come out. Gehn then shows you the book except his look is a bit different, like "what were trying to do" glare instead of "do you get how this book works?" studying look

@@frenne_dilley I support this effort

John Keston (as Gehn) really reminds me of Peter Cushing around when he did Star Wars.
Yeah he really looks like peter.

Just brilliant walkthrough of Riven with lots of insights that I missed long long ago when played the game. Respect.
I really like how the clearest picture we get of Gehn's behavior comes from the bad endings.

‘The only path opened to you now is through this book.’. Is actually stupid for him to say. Now using it to link no longer proves its safe.

@Dilandau3000 So if you release Gehn on Prison Island, it will still go to his laboratory where he does his closing monologue?
