Pool Lesson: Side Spin On The Cue Ball

- Hey everybody! Apologies for it taking me a while to publish my next pool video. It's been a little busy for me lately, but here is a lesson on using side spin on the cue ball.
I believe I covered the very basics to applying side spin, understanding cue ball deflection, and changing the outbound angle of the cue ball off of a rail, after you make a shot, to play better position on the next shot.
Enjoy!

First of all, there is no such thing as back hand and front hand English. The cue stick should always be parallel to the line of the shot contact point on the cue ball and the grip to hip distance should always be the same distance = close. Pay attention to Allison Fisher from behind. Second, and super important is that squirt is increased or decreases by speed and spin so compensating for an aim point relative to double the distance of the tip position is not good math.
"First of all, there is no such thing as back hand and front hand English"
I first learned about BHE from an old Allen Hopkins instructional video back in the late 90's
Then DrDaveBilliards ( czcams.com/users/DrDaveBilliards ) came along and does a much more SUPERIOR job at explaining the mechanics of BHE and FHE here:
billiards.colostate.edu/faq/sidespin/bhe-fhe/
and
czcams.com/video/6qXJoFOLZZE/video.html
Either a BCA Hall of Fame Inductee or DrDaveBilliards have no idea what they are talking about, or you could be a little more open minded on other mechanics.
@@LilChrisPoolPlayer I have to go with Academy on this...and I did watch the Dr Dave video. A beginner should never use the BHE method. As soon as one moves their hand further away or closer to their body, their stroke has changed. No problem for a guy like Dr Dave, but until one has a consistent stroke, this will only amplify any issues they have with lining a shot up. David McCarthy does a nice job of explaining it in more detail below.
Telling someone to use BHE on a video designed to introduce novice players to a spin concept is ridiculous. it's not accurate nor is the explanation given. A straight line is a straight line why would one move while already down on the shot? Poor mechanics that's why
Ray Husted i disagree completely. I am not a novice player but i am certainly no pro either. I stayed away from left and right english for apx the first 4-5 years of playing pool. And even when i started using it i wasnt good and had to be close to the ball or i would almost certainly always miss. It was not until i saw a video of someone explaining and showing backhand english that i was able to shoot with left and right english and consistently pot balls. I went from literally never using side english to being able to use it on almost any shot i wanted within one single practice session. Imo the bhe method is easily the best method for teaching a beginner how to shoot with side english. Once they practice with the method and get used to the feeling of striking the ball compensating for squirt, it is almost a no brainer. Just line up like your shooting center ball. Then leaving bridge hand planted, move the back hand to desired amount of side english your looking for. And doing this basically automatically calculates the amount of squirt your going to have there for beginners do not need to think about it or try and guess how much the cue ball is going to squirt as the bhe basically does all the thinking and aiming for you. I dont know how it could be easier for a beginner to learn. All they have to so is move their back hand. They dont have to think or calculate anything really. I only wish id have found bhe sooner as my game has jumped levels in the short time ive been using it. I can only imagine if i would have found it and been able to use it years go at just how much better id be at knowing what my cue ball is going to do and end up. My positional play would be several levels higher had i found bhe sooner.
@@punanie05 whatever you say. The point is, why learn something incorrectly? If you move when you are down, you didn't line up properly and have flawed fundamentals. You can defend BHE all you want. It's for lazy people that can't calculate and won't take time to learn
Told my mom I’m studying to improve my english. She might not get the full picture but at least she’s proud
😂😂😂
I love this guy. He's the BEST Instructor I've found on CZcams!
I am 66 years old and started playing pool when I was 7 years old. My father taught me to shoot as far as his ability allowed and I became what I consider a good player. My problem was always with side English and it has seemed all my life that whenever I attempted to use it, I would miss the shot. I was under the impression that I had to move the front and back of the stick to one side or another and just figured I sucked at it. I wish I had learned what you just showed 50 years ago. That was like a jaw dropping revelation to me!
I have recently retired and purchased a pool table to add to the enjoyment of being retired. Watching your channel will make it much more so. Thank you so much! I wish you the best.
Started playing late in life, but struggled with English for 30 years ( didn't shoot nor practiced enough to figure it out). After watching videos, it blew my mind. I finally realized there is a methodology that can give repeated results with reduced error. Thanks to CZcams and Chris my learning curve has flattened! 🤣👍🏽
This guys is the best teacher I’ve seen on here.
I never really understood the deflection, but now, thanks to you, i know where my cue ball will go, YOU are a great teacher
Thank you for the tip..Chris.
I have been shooting for probably 50 years and never realized how I was adjusting side spin. That is until now when I saw this video. I recommend anyone who is shooting or who wants to learn to shoot watch Chris's videos. Thank you Chris for clearing things up for me and the people that I talk to.
Thanks Chris!! Life altering instructional video because I can reall start enjoying the game more!!
Thank you for the Super Thanks! 🙏
Of all the videos I watched, this is the only one that explains how to move the stick for English. Thank you so much. I was moving the whole stick at once. Now I got it.
For a beginner your lessons helps a lot. Thanks for sharing your tips.
I have been watching lots of different instructors and I just found
the right one. You are awesome 👏 👏. Thank you so very much 🙌
Awesome video! Clear and calm instruction and demonstration. So glad I found you!!! Thank you!!!
Wow! Chris, I’m new to your channel also returning to shooting pool after a couple of decades. Your training make pool shooting more enjoyable. Thank you!
I knew how to hit the top, center and bottom of the cue to produce different/desired results, but I have almost always only spun the cue by accident, leading to a result I didn't want. Now I know how to speak proper "English" lol. Thanks, Chris, this is a great tutorial and super helpful!
Thanks Lil' Chris. I cannot understand who would thumb down on your videos. If they don't agree, all they had to do was leave. I love them and I am a long time good pool player. Good work!
By far the most productive side spin video, thank you so damn much.
This is the best video on how to spin on the entire CZcams
This is only video in entire youtube...which is worth to learn ball game. Thanks for teaching sir.
The gods of algorithm are on your side. I got a wild hair and searched Efren Reyes or 9 ball highlights and you were one of the first results. You're hitting the right buttons for the CZcams robots.
Bingo Chris! Thank u Christopher, this is by far top 5 of my favorite pool lesson video I’ve ever watched.
You are the very best at explaining on what your teaching. Your so easy to understand, not like uncle Dave. Thank you steve
Excellent straight forward explanations.
Congrats to the winner.
I've been watching lots of pool tutorials past few days and dude You make the best ones! Your scientific approach really helps to up the game! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! 🤘😎
In my view, you are one of the tops, to explain these topics, I have watched several video of you and they are pretty useful with a good Explanation.
I am a pretty experienced player, have been using english since 1975...I can sometimes run 2 or more racks of 9 ball, run 30+ in straight pool, play ok at 1 pocket (just trying to give some idea of my skill or experience level), I am not great, but ok...
This video and the CTE video by Lil' Chris are just awesome!!! I am going to the pool hall (Diamond Pro's 4.5" pockets) and try these techniques.
The great thing about Lil' Chris is the amazing toolkit that this could add to an experienced "feel" player like myself...maybe and especially for longer tough shots and in-close shooting at weird angles.
Thanks Lil' Chris. You are a cool gentleman shooter.
Thank u lil Chris I learned a lot from you, and I be able to play my neighbors with pride seeing your tutorial thank's again lil Chris.
I play a lot of virtual pool where using english is difficult, but i can t wait to see the results on the real table. Thanks Chris.
Thank you for covering that side spin because i am back playing 9 ball again after about 10 years, i was a 6
Wow, by far the best description and demonstration I’ve seen of how to apply and control the different types of side spin and how it affects the path of the cue ball before and after collision with the object ball. 👍🏻
It shows that with your tutorials will improve my game & keep assisting us people who don't access to pool 🎱 tutorials here in South Africa... Thanks again!
i thought i was the only one sneaking here ha ha kushubile
I dig all your videos. You explain and show the shots so much better than other videos I've seen. You break it down and make it so much easier.
You explain technique better than anyone! Prost!!!!
first of all thank you for the videos. secondly too all the critics, if you dont agree with him or his how to videos watch other videos. you dont have to agree with everyone just like you dont have to watch his videos. he is trying to help others and you criticize him for it. ill never understand some people. Thank you again for all the help.
Sold! & Subscribed! 👍👏 Keep up the great teachings🦯 😉
Really nice video. Finally simple explanation of how to and effect of side spin.
Hey Lil', you are superb in explaining and demonstrating these tricky shots. Love this video ❤❤.
Well explained about the deflection n where ball hits. 👏
Impressive in your calm and methodical presentation. Excellent!
I have always been curious about those English shots. Everytime I try to hit them, I ended up missing the target as always and I never had a clue about correcting the line of attack. This helped me so much and I'm eager to practice and perfect them.
On another note, your video tutorials are amazing. Thanks a lot, brother.
I would suggest get custom fitted, yes its a thing.
Also you can have and use more than 1 cue in your arsenal!
Thank you for the vid! As a beginner, I've been struggling to understand how to apply side spin without ending up with a mis-cue. You did an excellent job explaining it. Thanks again! I'm a subscriber!
Dude when you look at the camera all smug after you made a perfect shot. Love it! lol. Thanks for the lessons man will try them out.
Thank you You're the only one who explained so well an effect of the ball, thank you
Instructive vid. It gives an understanding of the cueballs behavior given from a point of wiew.
Really interesting. You have amazing control. Bravo!
what a good man you are for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Chris.
Thanks for a clear and to the point demo on cue ball spinning.
I love your teaching techniques. Very simple and straight forward.i was always using front hand English but had a hard time accounting for skew. Ill try backhand. Thanks!
Thanks Chris for all the lessons ...I've learned a lot from your videos.
I am playing pool literally for two years now but I haven’t had an idea to correct my spin , this is the video that I was looking for, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge with us
Happy to help!
Great. I never really understood where I was supposed to aim when applying English. Now your explanation makes some good sense. Time to crank up Virtual Pool 4 and put the physics to the test.
Tried all of this, I am amazed! Thank you.
Brilliant, getting gradually better thanks to your videos.
Cheers.
Excellent instructional video. Thanks Chris!
Now this is what a tutorial is, exactly on point, thank you.
Até que enfim um tutorial explicando torção do taco na bola da vez e a posição do corpo na hora da tacada! Visualizei muitas vídeo aulas, essa foi a primeira que explica com clareza! Parabéns! Ganhou um inscrito e meu like ;)
Very helpful explanation and demonstrations. Thank you.
For BHE to really work you need to know the natural pivot point of your cue. When your bridge length is not the right one for your cue the back hand pivot will not compensate the deflection the right amount.
Dr. Dave has videos on that and he also gives additional info about the limits of BHE (long shots and soft shots) and what you can do about it.
Despite the negative comments here I can say that as a beginner sidespin is very hard to learn and therefore many beginners simply don't even try it. Deflection and throw make it very complicated to pot a ball. BHE is a great way to atleast start playing with sidespin. That doesn't mean you'll stick to that method but it helps beginners to start using sidespin and gather experience without being overwhelmed by all the things you have to consider when looking for you aiming point.
This video and the one from Dr. Dave is all you need to get started. Good info, good explanation and good examples!
Wow! Thanks a lot! I love watching these lessons!!!!
Bro your videos are phenomenal and easy to understand. Every video I can take something away with me : thanks mate !!!
Excellent video. The way you described moving your front hand as opposed to your backhand was a great way to explain it. Some people just don't understand that you have to simplify things for people who aren't pro pool players. Thanks for dumbing it down for us. I tried all your methods and they work great. Of course it takes practice but the concepts work even if you're a total beginner. Thanks.
Excellent video Chris. Comparisons between no english applied to english applied really shows the benefits it can have to the shot. With more playing time one can easily see the academy mode but you simplified it. At least that's how I see it. Thank you for this video and all of your videos in the past, for you simplify the techniques used by better players, and us students/laymen with our own desired efforts build on what was learned from you. Thanks again.🖖
Really pedagogical pool videos you make. Thank you for improving my game.
Best explanation of side spin. It's gonna help me improve my shots for sure. ❣️
thanks for your video's i learned a lot just watching this one .know i see why your so good thanks chris
Instructions are very clear. Great job!
Thanks to Dr Dave's video on bhe I have a new tool in my toolbox. It was eye opening. I take what works from whoever. I still use what I learned over 50 years ago. Never forget how much I learned from playing 9ball with snooker players. Learned how to loose gracefully!
I am saving all your videos Lil Chris I'm average and Pool playing but I still got a ways to go in my brain appreciate everything you do I might have to watch your videos two and three four five times but they're worth it thanks a lot for what you do man from Jacksonville North Carolina
I will be practicing some of this later today. Just stumbled across your channel the other day and I like the training tips. I will be using your videos a lot, thanks man
Your video was great at explaining English ,squart, and deflection. I learned more Watchung your video than the others out there. Your explanation and visuals real help me to see the shot when I copied what you were doing. It brought my game to the next level of play. Thank you for taking the time to pass on the knowledge.
"squart"
Great info on various cues!
Thanks Chris, this was very helpful. Clearly explained.
Really really great video. Nice work Chris
I love that folks are not all agreeing with this video, but this video makes perfect sense and now I can see why I miss long pots. I played snooker nearly every day in my teens without being shown any technique at all, and after a 40 year layoff many of these internet videos are making my game better than ever. I cannot wait to get out and practice this BHE tomorrow. I have been trying to learn the advanced technique about spinning the cue ball to get it to "deflect" a little more for better position and I have only been trying FHE with limited success. It appears this must be what "squirt" is, so I will have to look that up. My long potting is about to improve because of this video. Lil Chris thank you for your great videos. I hope to update this comment in about a week.
Well I now know what "squirt" is, and it is not what I imagined. I don't know the term for what I am talking about. I do know from practice that the cue ball does deflect differently, depending on left and right BHE, even for dead in shots that go dead in. As I mentioned, I am interested in researching this on the table.
informative , excellent Basics , which shortens layoff players time to recover their mojo!
Excellent demonstration and explanation...
An eye opener
Thanks
A great teacher. The explanation is very detail.
Very good explenation and sample shots. Thank you
I love this game but it's hard for me to get the time to practice clubs are too far away and bar only have one table it does be a heart time just to get a game
I hv watched many videos of yours,I simply say you are amazing in your explanations, practical examples and covers all of the aspects. Thank you so much being a pool mentor for all of pool lovers ❤
May you please share a video what kind of cue and cue ball we should use for better performance. Thanks in advance
love the frames you have of Fast Eddie and Vincent! looks awesome!
Just started playing pool and I am loving it! This video will help me a lot for sure :)
Thank you, so I once went off of trial and error to compensate for English. Now I have a way to really know how. Can’t wait to try it. Thanks!
You are totally awesome!!!
Your classes are top of cream
Best pool tutorial ever made
thanks again for the lessons! they are basic lessons but very useful in a game...like one of my friends tell me "just make your shots simple" and all will come easy...
i hope you make a video regarding the difference between an 11.75mm tip shaft vs a 12.75mm tip shaft...i was using 11.75mm shaft before...however, i stopped playing for almost 3yrs and i couldnt shoot a ball with my shafts...so i shifted back to 12.75mm...but pls explain how these tips differ and which one is better to be use...tnx!
Enjoyed the way you explained this, thank you for the video
Great advice, thanks Chris. Am sure it will improve my game.
Great video and explanation. Very helpful.
Hey man, thanks a ton for this video. I think you just completely changed my pool game entirely. I watched a bunch of videos a few years ago, but may not have completely understood the difference between Front hand and back hand english. I've been using primarily back hand english but compensating my aim like you would for front hand english and just couldn't figure out why I was always missing shots when I was using english. I'm about to test it out tonight. Thanks again
Great job Chris. He's a player. Volume fine, video great, animations spot on plus you take the appropriate deliberate time to take shots while "staying down". I can see why some folks disable comments with the unwarranted negative feedback. Folks, he's NOT charging for this, it's free!
That was good. I never thought about it that way. Thanks. You have a great day.
Lil Chris... you're a godsend. Thank you for your content. Subscribed.
He’s a great teacher!!
thanks, you really put on a great demo and make pool more fun.
Great video Lil’ Chris, very very educational. 👍🏻💪🏻
I like this type of tutorials, but its always a perfrct setup (like when the cue ball is exactly between the rails) and if i'll try it in real life, it would never happen so i would have to improvise.
I would like you to make a tutorial for random shots, you explain things very clear and nice!
Thanks for this tutorial tho!
Very well explained. Best video to understand side spin.
Thank you so much for this wonderful lesson
This is great stuff Chris. Thanks
A lot of information i could try on our tournament this august - thank you
I am an amateur of the game, pretty good at it, especially when it comes to side spin play. I just learned side spin naturally and didn't actually know what's behind the regulations i do, to don't miss the target. Thank you for explaining it. Im learning a lot of new stuff on your channel btw. Thanks again
