    After reviewing the canon gl2 I found characteristics of both the canon gl1 and gl2 that I like and dislike. So in this video I share some of the pros and cons of each camera to help you decide which is best for you. And at the end I show example footage of both cameras with a fisheye attached to show the difference in video quality.

    The "P" stands for "Progressive Scan," which is Canon's name for non-interlaced video.

    That audio at the beginning is literally ingrained in my brain from my dad filming me playing soccer when I was younger and us watching the footage together, I'm looking everywhere for the blue loading screen that you would always get that I'm so fond of.

    I appreciate the thorough walk through with the itemized breakdown of really every difference. Honestly at times these old school SD tape based cameras offer things that involve an entire operation on even the best of the latest. I find the ability to just pop a tape in rather than forgetting if the memory card can be wiped or if it wasn't formatted... bla bla bla incredibly useful for just capturing everything you want to and then looking at it later. There is something Romantic about having to do a real time transfer to the computer and needing to set your ins and outs for each clip before you even are even putting stuff on the timeline. Its a different mindset. I am by no means suggesting someone invest in one of these planning to use it for everything. But when the 4:3 SD look fits- just shoot it that way.

      @DigitalAndInnovation Před rokem +2

      PS- also from the perspective given here... it is somewhat luck- but- if the camera gets smashed- the media is on tape- VS the memory card glitches out and rather than one single aspect of the footage being lost- the entire card is corrupted and if you are lucky- it is a two-three day process to get any footage back from recovery... and that is the best case scenario.

      @brandoncameracollection  Před rokem +1

      Yeah the whole process of filming to getting it all on your computer is what is so fun. And something I’m realizing lately is I think mini dv is the closest format to how you actually see things from the naked eye. If that makes sense haha. Vhs and hi8 were pretty retro looking. And modern cameras are so crisp and clean looking. But mini dv is right in the middle and I think it makes your video footage look true to how you actually see things. That or I have terrible eyesight😂

      @@brandoncameracollection I mean I am only 27... but I first learned editing on dual deck linear VHS- It was a good learning tool... but good grief, I see why that is no longer a thing. And with the VHS you had generationional loss- and mixed time-bases- grrr! With DV- you always have that thought in the back of your mind- alright so we have one tape and with the pre and post roll time 3-5 sec... lets plan around that. (good lesson for shooting on film... But when that isn't even an option it's hard to compare.) As you pointed out- the ability to tell a linear story really from the point of view of the filmmaker... The idea that the tape can be viewed start to end (without pulling up each individual clip in order) really is a nice option when you want to get a sense of chronology and also forces you to review things you might have not bothered to otherwise.

    I love how the GL1 and Gl2 where smaller versions of the XL1 and XL2 just like how the XH A1 was a smaller version of the XL H1.

I've been wanting to get a better camera that has the capability to switch lenses, and i've been eyeing the GL1 & 2 ever since I wanted to get a camcorder.

    Sick camera's! if I remember right the image sensor was bigger (1/3 chip)on the gl2 and it had alot better audio for skateboarding. I put a foam cover over the mic on the gl1 to block out some of the high pitch clicky clacky sound.

I’m so glad I came upon this video and your channel! Any recommendations for the battery I should buy and tape? Also would love to get a fisheye lens for it!

      Hey yeah for sure I’ll leave some links to so stuff that will work with your canon gl2. With the batteries I would recommend getting 2 batteries and the charger if you don’t have a charger. I alway like to use tdk or mexell tapes they just seems to work the best. And for the fisheye if you want that vignette look that skateboard videos have make sure to use the spacer ring that comes with the fisheye
