  • So, after testing like 5 different firmware for the inverter #jkbms , the new v14.13 is apparently the one which we have waited for. I've spent a long night in the garage to go through all the settings and parameters of the new software version. You can now set the absorption and float voltage as well as an absorption and float timer. With these settings, we can already set up a full logic which can perfectly charge your batteries. All settings can be adjusted to your needs and system design. It looks really good!
    They also implemented 3 new 'surprise' features, we talked about for a while which are really useful.

    I'm really happy for you Andy....75K subs is quite an achievement. I can easily see you blowing past 100K subs next year. The quality work you do keeps us coming back and keeps new subs coming to the channel. You do so much for the community and we all appreciate you very much.
    I'm really happy to see that JK has been putting in the effort to make their new BMS feature competitive and correcting its many wrongs. I hope that this entire experience has been a valuable lesson for JK....don't release a product until it is ready. They've lost some credibility by releasing this product too early, and even more credibility lost by advertising support for over 40 inverters when they support way less. Never a good idea to get into the practice of false advertising. It's very difficult to develop and keep a good reputation and very easy to develop and keep a bad one. So please JK, let this be the last time you pull a stunt like this.
    Having said all of that JK, you still have a loyal following of customers who are rooting for your success, so keep pushing, keep innovating.

    I think a tail current is still of critical importance. The caveat should be that it should be used in conjunction with the desired voltage. For example if full Charge voltage Is set to 56.64V and the tail current is reached at that voltage, the BMS should consider the battery to be 100% charged. If the prevailing current is equal to the tail current but the voltage is below the set voltage of 56.64V the BMS should consider the battery to be below 100% charge. Charging should be allowed to continue until both the tail current and the desired voltage are reached.

    • @MMMM2MMMM2MMMM
      @MMMM2MMMM2MMMM Před 7 měsíci +2

      What will this do when the battery is older and the capacity dropped to 80%.
      People who have bought battery's might not buy/build another anymore. Just curious what a tail current is.

    • @garymeissner6659
      @garymeissner6659 Před 7 měsíci +2

      I have to agree with Andy on this one. If you are charging at a fixed current, then "tail current" works very well. But in our PV Solar setups, the charge current is typically much lower than the C rate of the cells, and it varies all over the place. Once the voltage does finally reach the absorb voltage, the charge controller should just try to keep it there. But as the sun goes down and clouds go by, the current can still dip off, but then come right back, even if the absorb voltage has ben reached. We should still hold the voltage at the bulk absorb voltage for the desired time, even if the current falls lower from time to time. On the flip side, when I use my mains charger to charge up my e-bike batteries at the 1C rate, the tail current is a very good indication that it has reached full charge. My solar battery bank only charges at 0.2C which is not much over the typical tail current for the cells. Different use case will change which works better.

  • @garymeissner6659
    @garymeissner6659 Před 7 měsíci

    The wire resistance is a bit more important in the JK BMS. Since the balancer can pull or push 2 amps to any cell, that resistance is used to correct the cell voltage reading. My JK-BMS calculated from 0.131 to 0.142 ohms for each lead. At 2 amps, 0.142 ohms will have a voltage drop of 0.284 volts when the balancer is operating. If it is trying to measure the cell voltage while the balancer is operating, it knows to calculate this voltage offset to add or subtract it from the measured voltage at the balance wires. If a cell is being discharged, it needs to add this offset back. And while the balancer is charging a cell at 2 amps, it would then need to subtract this raised voltage from the cell measurement. When you change the pack parameters, it appears to measure the resistance all by itself. It pulls and pushes balance current from each cell and measures how much the voltage changes and then calculates and stores that as the resistance value. In reality, this resistance is 2 complete wires for each cell. Cell one is the resistance of the zero wire on the negative main terminal AND the 1+ wire from between cells 1 and 2. Any voltage drop on both wires all will add or subtract from the cell voltage reading of cell 1. Cell 2 also uses the 1+ wire, but then has to add the 2+ wire to that. My wire 2+ is the pin that failed in my JK-BMS. When that lead failed, it showed both cell 2 and cell 3 as zero volts.
    On BMS units that only pull 0.06 amps for balancing, this is not a big deal. But at 2 amps, it certainly is.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Před 7 měsíci

      The BMS does not measure the voltage during balancing. It waits for a few second after balancing to have the cell voltage stabilised before measuring and making a decision again.

    Discharge pre-charge timer could be the time it takes the pre-charge resistor to precharge the inverter capacitors.

    Andy, I am pleased that you are going to look at what happens between BMS's that are used in a parallel configuration. This is important for several reasons.
    1 - what happens with the settings, is one a master the others become slaves - controlled by the dip switches unless you have a Seplos V3
    2 - what happens if you already have one battery that has been in service and you add a new battery and the new batter has new firmware. In this case, which one would you make the master
    3 - in a real world scenario, what is the best practice when adding a new battery to you battery back.

      1) We will look into this in all details in the next videos.
      2) that does not matter. You can happily mix old and new batteries in parallel as long as they have the same chemistry, voltage, cell count and each has its own BMS
      3) just connect it. I have shown this many times here on the channel. You can mix and match, no problem. Watch here: czcams.com/video/bhCSccNsQOw/video.html

  • @rockyfox7087
    @rockyfox7087 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Hello Andy,
    It seems promising but we have couple of things that needs to be tested
    For example what if while in bulk charge mode we didnt have sun energy as it should for one hour, in that case it will turn to float mode without actually giving the batteries enough time to absorb, and if we increase the time then we are putting the cells under pressure of absorption more than it should

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Před 7 měsíci

      Well, if you haven't got enough sun to stay at the absorption voltage, there is nothing you can to regardless what settings, functions or features you have. The voltage will go down in any way. if you hit absorption voltage, you will be at 99% anyway, so... 🤷‍♂️
      Outcome: there will be no absorption for that day. No drama, it will do it again the next day or in 5 months after winter...

  • @GregOnSummit
    @GregOnSummit Před 7 měsíci +3

    6:40 ... Yes grouping is best, especially from an accessibility perspective. It would be nice if the settings for the precision is the same for all values too. Makes it easier to read.
    SOC to 100% .. what if you have one cell that is higher then the others and hit's this limit before the balancer can bring it down? Is it instantaneous, or is there a delay?
    On the zero volt state of charge ... is this linear, so it doesn't show 10% then suddenly 0%?
    The naming of some of the parameters is confusing. Would be nice to have an icon for a bigger description ... RCV is float voltage?
    Dry trigger ... turn on fans . That's great 👍
    23:00 ... On the ability to turn float off and on, is there an API that you can call to run a job to automate this?
    Cutting edge is cool, but I'll wait for now👍
    As always awesome stuff !

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for your feedback.
      The 100%SOC is not perfect. If on cell triggers it, it will not interrupt the absorption and balance time. It just sets SOC to 100% and remaining capacity the same as battery capacity.
      Voltage is not linear with LiFePO4 but SOC will not jump as the BMS uses coulomb count to count down SOC. SOC0% and SOC100% just shows the BMS where the boundaries are.
      No API, except the BT connection you can potentially tap in. Not sure if this is possible.

    I think a tail current makes absolute sense in combination with the voltage like the smartshunt does. If ther is a cloud then not only the current but also the voltage drops but this value is also a requirement for 100%. A time doesnt know anything: if the voltage is reached in a sun peak, it's likely that a few percent are missing.

If there is not enough sun and the (max possible) tail current can´t be reached the battery won´t be set to 100% ´couse of the voltage drop in the higher knee of the charging curve.

    Hi Andy. Myself I would like the re-bulk to be triggered by cell voltage, rather than a timer. It would seem that by timer the battery could be topped up many times during the day even if no significant load has drawn any Ah out of the battery. Needless charge cycles on the battery?
    By using re-bulk by cell voltage, a small load would not trigger a re-bulk, but a larger load that draws the cell voltages down enough would usefully refresh the battery. Im fully off grid and the Victron mppt's do this perfectly. The Victron inverter chargers not so much given you cant select the actual re-bulk voltage.
    A note about the buzzer warning and dry contact relay use would be that it looks like you can only select 1 parameter option??
    Maybe a tick box for each parameter that you would like to select.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Před 7 měsíci

      The idea of the timer is to NOT have it topped up again the same day (timer runs out at night).
      With LiFePO4 it makes little sense to top up again. There is no real difference in capacity gain to go from float back to bulk voltage. Less than 0.5% usually. So a repeated top up during the day has almost no effect and only stresses the battery.
      You have two relays which can be programmed individually. I think it's a great feature.

    Use the "Absorption" voltage just for balancing the cells once per week.
    Keep them at "Float" voltage for most of the time.
    ----------
    Victron has a 2-signal BMS Assistant with two signals "allow-to-charge" and "allow-to-discharge" that is supposed to be more "gentle" on the electronics rather than the BMS brutally disconnecting the battery in case of cell OVP / UVP. I wonder if the two relay contacts DRY1 and DRY2 could be used as 2-signal BMS for Victron, as a first line of protection. Then use the BMS OVP / UVP protection as the second protection level.

      I have re-bulk (not timed) set to slightly (0.9V) below Float. That way if it's been cloudy for while during the day, and the battery has dropped, it possibly can top up a bit before sundown.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Před 7 měsíci

      That's a good idea of a long term Float. I'll see what the maximum time is we can enter for this timer. I can ask JK to change the max time in a future FW update. Should be no problem.
      I wouldn't be too concerned about the BMS shutting down in a protection situation. We still have the MPPTs delivering power to the Multiplus during the day, so no real shutdown. UVP is very rare as the MP will shut down before that or take power from the grid instead of the battery.
      How often does it occur? And if it happens, you need to find and fix the cause anyway.
      It's a bit like a circuit breaker, it's there but should never trip.
