    I graduated premed in May 2021. My mom passed in September 2021 from brain cancer. I worked as medical assistant for a few months but being in that setting was too triggering. So I took the next year and a half working as a preschool teacher. It was a much needed break. Now I a few years after my mom passed, I feel ready to explore the medical field again. So please pray for me as I ask God to reveal to me if he is calling me medicine or education.

    I am a doctor too....and honestly...it has to be #1..in you life for years not just pre-med....but medical school....residency....and then your career...its never ending!...the #1 thing you need is the ability to understand " postponed gratification!"...if you get that...then you have a chance....then the 2nd part...better be you absolutely love to take exams...for the rest of your adult life!...medicine is nothing but a lifetime of preparing and taking exams...for the rest of your life......its not for everyone.

    I’m glad you are doing what is best for yourself. I’m glad you didn’t fake it till you made it because it would’ve made you so much worse mentally. It’s ok! It’s ok to make mistakes or realize along the way. I hope the best for you along the way. Sending you hugs💛

    Mental health should always be a priority (if not the first priority). It takes courage and self-love to put our mental health first. Every action, behavior, emotional state, spiritual state, and overall well-being starts with our thoughts and what we tell ourselves. So putting in the time to heal ourselves mentally and recuperate from traumatic or toxic experiences will help us come to terms with things and let them go so we can move forward. Never feel guilty for putting your mental health first and never feel sad for putting a pause on pre-med. Medicine/medical school will still be there if and when you want to continue this path.
    Lastly, I genuinely want you to know that YOU. ARE. NOT. STUPID. OR. INCOMPETENT. You are NOT. Period. End of conversation. The fact that you've made it this far is a testament to your willpower, discipline, and hard work abilities. Don't forget to credit yourself for making it this far in your journey. It was not easy! Also, anyone who speaks to another person as that PA did in your story, tells you who THEY are (horrible). It says NOTHING about your capabilities or intelligence. Sending you all my light and love.
    P.S. - The MCAT exam was a traumatic experience for me too, so I completely understand. You're not alone, girl! Not at all!❤

      Thank you so much for this! I definitely feel like medicine very well may not be the end and it also may be. But for right now in this present moment I want to focus on me and my mental health. It’s very fragile and I cannot focus I just can’t. I really appreciate your message which is why I know I need some time to step away and just do things I love right now. And pursue other interests at my own pace. But if it is meant to be it will definitely come so thank you so much for your support on my journey!!!

    I can relate to you so much. I'm so sorry you had a rough experience being a premed. I also had a traumatic experience at work, and the seniority or superiority complex you mentioned is very true. I was harassed at work because of their excuse, like what you said, "teamwork." I'm studying for the MCAT while managing work, shadowing, and clinical volunteering. It's exhausting! I almost came to a point where I'm not sure where my passion was. Was it me just being young and naive or am I now just seeing things clearly? I'm happy you are doing what's best for you and putting your mental health first! Be proud you made this decision now than regretting later. I wish you the best and hope things work out. Sending lots of love.

    Hi there! I had a very similar experience growing up as I always spoke about becoming a doctor until my senior year of high school. After joining a dental club, I became obsessed. The instant gratification you receive helping others, and the decreased amount of pressure/competitiveness made pursuing a specialization through dentistry much more efficient (also, I like using my hands and PROVING to someone I can help rather than relying on a pill - mentally made me more sound). I now plan on becoming an oral surgeon, hoping to go down the 6 yr route to perhaps subspecialize and also to get two years of med school. In the end though, I love dentistry more than medicine. However, the prestige of medicine, the competitiveness, and the societal perspective of medicine can blind a lot of people into thinking it’s the only respectable field- let alone in healthcare out there. I know oral surgeons would still be viewed as prestigious and so I may sound a little hypocritical, but my point is my mom/peers didn’t care what I wanted to be, they simply were ashamed I didn’t want to attend medical school anymore. I truly believe this mindset is wrong as having suffered my own health issues, I had to single handedly manage my own treatment with incompetent doctors. The title won’t save you and you can ruin someone’s life by not caring to point them in the right direction. Shadowing a physician, I realized that with the business aspect of medicine, I didn’t like the way physicians operated. I found that in dentistry, the hands on and front end treatment offered more avenues for direct treatment of an ailment. Lastly, I can confidently say that most pre-meds do not have it in them to respect other careers out there. They begin to develop tunnel vision, believing that any other healthcare position is less than, let alone another field. This is an extremely flawed narrative. I believe that when making a decision about what career you want, you have to stop and think about the job based aspect of it, “can I operate the way I want to?” This is why saying I want to help people isn’t enough to get into med school. I understand this response was very long😭, but basically, what I wanted to say was taking a step back, I realized I still love healthcare, I just admired the job aspect of another sector of it. Choosing medicine means sacrificing a lot. While oral surgeons may be on call, it is never going to be even close to as much as a simple procedural-based medical doctor, let alone medical surgeon. When we’re able to let go of societal perceptions when picking a career, that is when we are our truest selves. I am very proud of you.

    You can’t combine working full-time without putting your grades and mcat scores in jeopardy. Focus on one thing at a time even if it means working full-time for one year, while you save up enough money to go part-time.

    I was class of 2020 and was also premed, I was planning on applying to med schools summer of 2021, long story short I got tired of healthcare and how toxic the environment is and I currently work in finance lol. I have a Biology degree so what I do now it’s not relevant to my degree at all but I’m just glad that I left healthcare so don’t beat yourself over it. You’d be surprised at the amount of people that leave healthcare and switch to a different field, it’s more common than you think. Our mental health is more important than a job/career.

      Hey! I’m also a biology major and premed and have been questioning this path for a while but felt like I couldn’t do a nothing else because I’m a biology major. I think I would also be interested in biostatistics or data science but just didn’t know how to get my foot in the door of biotech or any other career unrelated to only biology. Do you mind taking a little about how you got into finance? Like what experiences you had or if you got a masters?

    • @daria_8536
      @daria_8536 Před rokem +1

      @@mr.beancouldbreakmyspleen643 Hi, I didn’t get a masters degree yet although I’m planning on getting my MBA and my company is going to be paying for it which I’m very grateful about because student loans are ridiculous lol so I basically used my experience to get my current job. Before getting my current job I tried to put my biology degree to use and applied to lab related jobs but they’re so hard to find and they barely pay anything. But if you like the idea of working in a lab I would recommend looking into Clinical/Medical Lab Science programs, they’re typically a year long and after that you can become a lab technologist, which is different from a lab technician. Lab technologists get paid more than lab technicians and have more job opportunities. You can work in a hospital, at a Pharm company, blood bank, etc. If you have a regular Bio degree you can only work as a lab technician so if you want the better lab jobs like lab technologist you would need to do that program. But if you’re not interested in working at a lab there are other options. In my case I work in the field of finance as an executive assistant, I’m basically the right hand of one of the executives at the company. This is an administrative type of job. One of the reasons I think I landed the job was because I’ve been building general administrative experience since undergrad. I did work study (for a year) and worked for one of the school’s departments as an office clerk. Then I worked at a physical therapy place where I did what they call “back office” work but I also knew how to work the front desk so whenever they needed coverage at the front I was able to do that. I was there for two years and then I started working at an imaging center (radiology). There, similar to the physical therapy place I did mostly back office work but also knew how to work the front desk. I was also there for another two years. So at that point I had about five years of general administrative experience. As I mentioned on my other comment I was tired of healthcare so I wasn’t interested in working in neither the clinical side nor the administrative side of healthcare. So when I left the imaging center I started looking for administrative jobs outside of healthcare which was scary because I wasn’t sure if anyone was willing to hire me since I was switching fields but I still gave it a go. When I was job hunting I would look for administrative jobs like “administrative assistant” “office administrator” “executive assistant” “office coordinator” etc. As I did my job search I realized that a lot of those types of jobs just wanted you to have general administrative experience (even working in the front desk counts as administrative experience), though there were some jobs that wanted you to have experience specifically in the position you were applying for but most of them just wanted general admin experience. I also realized that a lot of the jobs wanted you to have bachelors degree but they didn’t specify a type a degree, there were of course a few exceptions some jobs wanted you to have a degree in Business Administration or something business related. But the majority just wanted you to have a Bachelors degree regardless of what it was in. With all that being said, your experience can be very useful. I was able to put my experience to good use and that’s how I left healthcare. Data science and Statistics are great degrees to get if you are interested in pursuing that path. Specially Statistics, you can actually work as a Data scientist with a Statistics degree so I think Statistics gives you more options. But at the end do you what you want to do. A masters in computer science is another great option, with that you can work as a software engineer, data scientist, cybersecurity engineering, etc. that’s another degree that gives you a lot of options. The good thing is that you deciding to not go to med school is not the end, there’s so many options out there. Good luck on your journey!!

    Thank you for sharing the experience of traumatic work in the healthcare field. You have been working hard and have done a great job medical assistant to surgical tech. I think you are the best at doing what you are doing now and enjoy, and be proud of yourself for what are you working on now. I wish you the best and everything will work out, not only in the healthcare industry but mostly every workplace we have to deal with traumatic and stressful experiences you are still young and medical school will be there for you, please continue it. I am in my third year of college now to pursue PA, and because of my age, I might end up with MA. I was a dental assistant before for 7 years, I left my dental assistant and desire to move from the dental field to the medical field.

    Are you thinking about pursuing other careers? Like maybe Clinical Laboratory Scientist, a Medical Lab Technician, maybe something outside of the health field like Human Resources, Finance, or Accounting; maybe think about something in the Tech field like Data Scientist or Analyst. Now is the time to really think about what would you truly enjoy. Maybe film editing, you can get a job at places like Netflix or something. Take your time. You’re still so young. You’ll figure it out.

      Yes I’m currently taking this year
      To work on myself, work and save money, and think about which program in higher education I would like to pursue eventually. I’ve definitely been considering finance and accounting because I have been interested in budgeting, credit scores, and all of that. Last but not least I have been thinking about Tech sales and considering that. I have that creative mindset as well to do something really creative so we will see. For now just taking time to work on my mental health. And who knows medicine may come back around

    I’m still a junior in high school and what I’ve noticed is premed is incredibly overhyped. There is only a specific type of person that should go into the medical field. Mainly people do it for the wrong reasons including some that you talked about. This is a good decision, for you to realize before it’s too late.
