Take a look at what Powerwerx, I just paid bookoo bucks for some of the 50 amp contacts only. Back in the past the early EF Johnson had a line of radios that used an all in one connector from AMP. Their cost was stupid high for the mating power cable. One day I was at an industrial electric supply shop and I noticed a display of a connector that would "probably" mate up with the radio connector. Bingo, it was a decent match, Power poles. Had to buy two boxes of 50 shells but they only had black and white, no problem. A bag iPod 15 amp contacts rounded out the sale. I think I paid $20 for everything back in the mid 80’s. To this day I still have some of the white shells left. I made my money back by selling 10 complete power cables to customers. Industrial suppliers like Mouser, Digital-Key, Graybar Electric tend to be down to earth with their pricing.
Good video Sir. Thank you for the information and the time it took to make it easy for the rest of us.
Glad it helped
I never would have thought to source PowerPoles from Mouser or DigiKey. New tool added to the toolbox. Thanks Kyle!
Awesome. Glad I could help!
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for watching!
GREAT AND EXCELENT timing. I am in the same work boat. I have been looking for some assorted connectors and i was astounded on the cost recently. THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO on this and i will be ordering them and picking them up from mouser directly. The joyes of living next to there shipping center. 💯
Glad I could help
great job. I like mouser . I get transistors and IC's from them. Powerworx is great as well. have many products outers do not have. I like to combine orders to save on shipping. I started with the big powerworx kit for power poles . went threw them. I got that Andersson tool for crimping and the insert/re move tool in the kit with nice carry bad. that little tool for remove contacts works real well . they just slide out easy . much easier than a small screw driver. I got the tools for the big connectors as well. up to 350 amp ones. 73's
awesome!
Thanks for the tip! I never would have thought to look there.
Happy to help!
thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Awesome, it pays to look around.👍
Yes it does!
Live in Alaska...shipping is mind blowing!!!!
I can't even imagine. Does Amazon even allow prime shipping to AK?
LOL! Yes, but there are lots of places that don't or won't. We just learn and adjust accordingly :) @@AA0Z
Nice find indeed! APPs are silly expensive for what they are to begin with but that DX Engineering pricing is ridonkulous!
I about fell out of my seat when I saw that $45 price tag....
Having choices is almost always a good thing.
Agreed!
Nice discovery! I agree..."Powerpole The World!"
Oh yeah...PP the world!!!!
Thanks for this! Would not have crossed my mind, and I already have an account, and I need to order some of these anyway. I find Mouser has much quicker shipping compared to Digi-Key, so they have become my preferred vendor for small items. (toroids and capacitors already in wish list for next month. Guess what I'm about to do. :) )
Glad to be of help!
Great idea! Ham Radio Hobbiest = Cheapskate who know electronics
Yeah! I couldn't believe 45 bucks for PP's...there had to be a better solution!
@@AA0Z Isn't there a Mouser Electronics in St Louis? I live in KC area and am definitely going to check out local Electronics Supply house
Mouser is good. Especially if there are other parts to get to save on shipping
Yeah, I usually add 10 or 15 PP's to my order when I do order from Mouser.
Thanks Kyle, I've had lots of experience with the AMZ imposters & how its hard enough yo get them to work well let slone the sting of paying too much gor the real ones. Thanks for the resl world examples. Cheers, Davey --KU9L
Me too. I bought some knock off power poles a few years ago and was wondering why they were not mating up correctly!
@@AA0Z Kyle, Maybe a video showing some of the mistakes common to using them? I made all of them at one time or another & probably will do it again. Things like using too big a wire for the cup size, solder whiking up the wire, not having the tool to assist locking in the pin, wrong crimp setup, etc. Food for thought, I am always trying to bring my redneck skill level up to my former electronic technician level, in retirement I can still learn, lol. Cheers, Davey --KU9L
Excellent! 73
Yes, thanks
Great Info!! Thanks. Kyle
Glad it was helpful!
Nice find!!! Taking this info down! 73!
Enjoy!
I'VE STRUCK GOLD!
Let me know how that works out for you....lol
xt60 ftw hehe.
Powerwerx is awesome!
... Oh, and K3LR said he's coming over there to kick your butt... 😅
Next time K3LR invites me over to contest at his station, we'll sit down and have a little chat about PP prices....LOL
Here in VK the at the local electronics store, the housings are $2.25 each and the contacts are $1.10 each. So for a set its $6.70. I will be replenishing my stocks when Im at Dayton in 2024
WOW....someone needs to import them for cheaper!
My dude! I was just about to start investing in powerpole gear. Perfect timing. Thank you!!!! BTW what crimpers do you recommend?
I'm reading your mind!!! LOL. I just have a couple of cheap crimpers from Amazon. Nothing special.
@@AA0Z iwiss crimper. or I crimp same company works great
25x 30amp connectors was cheaper for me from Powerwerx compared to mouser 🤷♂️
That included shipping? Maybe you are closer to one than the other.
@@AA0Zyes including shipping
Nice video! - I see Mouser has two part numbers for the 15/30/45 connectors 879-1327 and they also have 879-1327-BK Both are red but one costs more than the other. Any idea the difference between those two parts ?
Looking through DK, one has standard packaging and the other is “ bulk” but no description about what the packaging is ( not like they come taped on a real for automatic assembly
Correct. Get the cheaper ones. They just put them in plastic bags....
I guess you've been stricken from DXE's Christmas list 😪
LOL! I'm sure they have bigger fires to fight....
Are the cheaper power pole crimpers any good?
I have a pair of crimpers from Amazon that work just fine.
Thanks, I like the quick savings comparison. I’m not sure if you have ever talked about your callsign journey. I’m a green extra ham, 3 week from tech 2 extra. I’ve spent way too much time looking into changing mine, after a free sequential upgrade at extra success. Just curious about it. Thanks again. KZ4BU
I absolutely dislike power poles! Actual contact area is tiny and they feel cheap. I use XT-90 connectors from rc hobby industry, they are gold plated, not expensive, and handle 90 amps
