Always helpful. Previous versions of these tutorial helped me get into Linux. How about video about dual booting Windows and Pop!OS? I remember it wasn't so easy for me to do.
Thanks it was helpful
Sometimes, after big Windows updates it can rewrite your grub by second windows bootloader, even if you have linux and windows on separated hard disks. To prevent such behavioar, enough just set some password on your bios/uefi and this will protect your bootloaders.
Thanks for sharing the exp
I'm good because windows 10 does not update that much anymore right?
@@carpybaraba brother you posted this comment 2 weeks ago vid was posted 3 weeks ago use ur head and yes windows 10 still updates
@@eac1776 then I won't update lol
Thanks man ❤
Glad it worked out
You're the best!!
Glad it helped
Thanks bro
Windows might rewrite the efi partition, therefore i preferred saparate partition for it, but it doesn't seems possible with current version of Ubuntu during installation so i shifted the efi partition after installation, let me know if there is a better way
I tried it, but the next button and device for bootloader installation is greyed out, also it shows my ssd as nvm and my flash as sda
Can I partition the space on an external d: drive?
can you show how to do a dual boot with 2 or more linux?
@SavvyNik, can you make a more advanced video about installing various distros without disabling secure boot? For Ubuntu and openSuse for example this is easy but other distros require extra steps if one does not want to disable secure boot. Also to my understanding, kernel modules (for example for ZFS) also require manual signing when using secure boot. I found it hard to even find an up to date list of the status of secure boot support of distros. I also find shim and MOKs somewhat confusing, therefore I am currently using openSuse Tumbleweed on my secure boot enabled machines (and Arch/Garuda Lite on older machines without secure boot).
Honestly it’s the same process but in reverse. You want to have Ubuntu installed first before you put windows in. Then reconfigure the bootloader so it detects Windows
your teaching something to people who already know it! throwing around words that noobs have no idea about
That’s why the last video has 600k views. Do some introspection
Ur right, @savvynik thanks
14:15 so all options on my "Device for boot loader installation" are grayed out and I can not progress forward. the ONLY think I could think that I did differently than the tutorial was that I wanted to install Ubuntu on a different HD than windows... could that be what is tripping me up?
I had the same problem, I solved it by doing this:
Some Notes: (by Channel owner)
- Disable bitlocker
- Disable Secure Boot in BIOS
Disable CSM in BIOS if you can't disable Secure Boot
Disable Fastboot in BIOS
- Always backup your data before starting Confirm you're using a UEFI based BIOS
Thanks man, this was really helpful 👍
Maybe you will require to reset the keys on the Secure Boot options (BIOS)
What i dont get: since years there is a perfect graphical efi boot manager called rEFInd. Finds the installed OSes automatically. Boots linux, win, macos, bsd. Boots linux directly from root fs (ext4, btrfs) when kernel supports the efi stub mechanism. Offers usb boot and firmware entry. Awesome graphical interface, adjustable, customizable. Why is this not built in into any mainboard firmware? It never failed me, warmly recommended.
Agreed. I do not understand the lack of love rEFInd and Clover get, especially from distros. Why is there no distro that offers to install rEFInd at least as an option instead of GRUB ?
@@AlexandruVoda Exactly, i forgot clover. Apt install refind isnt that hard, but you are right. Rod Smith is an unappreciated genius. I mention refind on any channel about linux, just as it made my life so easy.
@@sheldonkupa9120 Do you know if rEFInd works with btrfs and Snapper for easy automatic snapshots?
@@AlexandruVoda Sry, i dont use snapper, so no. But if you boot the distros bootloader on the efi partition with the help of refind, i see no reason why it wouldnt work.
Will this work on any ryzen 7000 cpu? Last time i tried installing ubuntu (in around feb/march 2024), the latest ubuntu version did not ship with the linux kernel that is compatible with ryzen 7000. I need to know if the latest kernel version support zen4 or not before going through all these hoops
Parrot OS
Hi! Is it possible to install bootloader with new installer directly on efi partition like was in older versions? Can you make video for automated installation using yaml?
I mean, yes you can create own manual grub for bootloader install. It would be cool because you will have an option to customise it, like i have added my own animations to it
Please make video on 🙏Best linux an distro based on Ubuntu for gamming specialy for gamer
What if i have a pc that I don't want to use windows os on it but just Ubuntu, can the image file you installed on the flash drive be used? And how?
Yes, it’s the same image file. Another video coming got that setup.
Thx
Wasn't the UEFI Boot manager a solution to end all boot managers? OS just adds itself to the UEFI BM and it is done. I always thought it would make LILO/GRUB/MS BCD obsolete. Confusing. 😕
Boot loader and boot manager are not the same, but some can be both, you still need a bootloader like grub or win mgr or systemd boot for the OS. Thats what the bootmanagers handle. If the kernel supports it, it is directly bootable, but built in uefi bootmanagers dont support efi stub, as far as i know. Also here you need a separate bootloader which is accordingly offered by any distribution. rEFInd is a good solution for all situations imho.
@@sheldonkupa9120 that's the reason i created my own customised grub loader with animations on a separate efi and ntfs division (so it be like an OS but mainly a grub, just for animations). It appears soo cool while booting, then offering to switch between parrot, kali, win, ubuntu, garuda
But what if you install the Linux distro on an other disc . Where do you put the boot manager is it still SDA?
Same disk as you are installing it on
I want to install it on external ssd but dont know whwt to choose device for bootloader? External disk or primary where windows is installed?
If they’re completely separate I’d just do it on the external. Then you can select which drive through BIOS to use.
@@SavvyNik thanks
it doesnt have a dual option for me, when i get try to do manual partitioning sda is just my 32gb usb stick, and my device is nvme0n1, i choose the space in nvme0n1 i had partioned earlier but for boot loader the only option is the flash disk
@savvyNik I'm having the same issue as @neilmannion9322 , would it possible to answer his question please.
@@theradkid72 Following some other steps i saw online i created a new 300mb UEFI partition, then moved the boot to there and deleted the old 100mb uefi partition. This at least got me the option 'install ubuntu alongside windows boot manager' to appear, however my 'device for boot loader installation' was still different from the video and i had the choose nvme01 256gb (the entire device), and while it said it installed corectly when i turn the device on i can only get it to load to windows
@@neilmannion9322 Gotcha! I actually got it to show up after some tinkering around in the BIOS. I was able to get 'install ubuntu alongside windows boot manager' to appear by disabling the CSM on bios. Once that was disabled, it showed up for me. Hope this helps in case you try again later on. Appreciate your reply tho!
Kenapa punya saya fc di bagain install release
I don't know why but my ubuntu installer is automatically gets shut down in between
what if I install another storage
when i restart my computer i dont see any options to switch between windows or ubuntu! what should i do now?
Go to BIOS, change boot order 1st on ubuntu, 2nd on windows.
"If in case this doesn't works", then plant a grub manually for switching between two. Reason for it could be ubuntu's bootloader(grub) might be corrupted during the process.
i was installing ubuntu before this new gui and on that version i can install the efi or like the grub on the root partition we've made thats why i got confused and just watched a tutorial hahahahaa
if you use CSM(compatibility support module) that basically runs it in "BIOS" mode. not UEFI mode. if you install windows like that drivers for video cards and memory will not work. also, if you have windows installed in "BIOS" mode os-prober won't find it because it is looking for a UEFI partition.
well it might find it if you also installed linux in BIOS mode.*
I accidentally deleted windoww by deleting the windows partition but I have the boot manager how can I reinstall windows?
yup just get a windows 10 /11 bootable pendrive
i tried Virtual box & latest Kubuntu my Win11 wanted some[?] 2Kb that downloaded & installed it still would not rum Virtual box [have new mini pc] so i did the disk particition and USB live distro works great thank you now thimk i will [one line of code {God Mode} so i can find all the Win 11 things to uninstall and/o tun off there are even 3rd party vendors gathering {spying} on ones computer erks me
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
sorry... no need swap partition now ???
No need as mentioned in the video there’s a link to make a swap file instead in the description which gives you much more versatility
😊
Some Notes:
- Disable bitlocker
- Disable SecureBoot in BIOS
- Disable CSM in BIOS if you can't disable SecureBoot
- Disable Fastboot in BIOS
- Always backup your data before starting
- Confirm you're using a UEFI based BIOS
Forget I asked. Problem solved.
Why use that bloated balena etcher software, is there not a single command on windows that would accomplish the same?
good video but you go for unnecessary details
no no no dont do that. put your windows in virtual machine inside your linux. thats all. dont dual boot it. dont give windows any access to bare hardware ROOT.
I looove playing games in virtual machines.
