That's irony for you! A song about careless attitudes and people's blissful ignorance to troubles going on around them. I love Oingo Boingo for this, always making a point with a great tune and an air of mystery that made you think!

It feels like the psychological post script commentary on a culture of passive Narcissism. :)
But mostly it just makes me realise that i watch way too many serial killer/true crime documentaries--i can identify with that bizarre 'left out' feeling way too well...

Yes. I used his song Grey Matter for my adv. English Lit. Class. We brought recordings of a song 🎵 that had meaning to us and play it to the class and do an oral report on the song. Teacher loved the song and I got an A. I was NOT an A student. Not until my 2nd year of college anyway. I had ADD and didn't know it (it was 1988 and I was born in 1967) 😉. My teacher was a surfer and kinda a rebel. He wod show movies in class like the Terminator and other popular R rates movies even though he knew he would get in trouble. He also was a coach of the surf 🏄‍♂️ club (I was a surfer too). Everyone loved this guy. Sorry for the long text but just kinda took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and wanted to share with the class 👋😎.

My strongest memory of this song was in about 1984. I was a kid and comic book collector. There was only one comic shop in my town and when I showed up one Saturday morning, this dude who worked there and always dressed in karate gi pants with some band t-shirt was playing this song behind the counter. It stuck with me right away, it was a great morning, I had enough money to buy a back issue or two (maybe 3 or 4 bucks, they were cheap then), and my Dad was away for some reason so he could'nt scream me awake and shit on me all day. When I hear this song, I feel like the day is free of worry, which is kind of ironic but fitting.

It seems likely that that's the intent of the song, but the case really isn't made why one _should_ care. It's just reveling in irony without advancing any ideas of its own.
Ironically, the song's wallowing in irony ends up making the song an anthem for self-concern, rather than a sharp criticism of it. It's the equivalent of someone going:
"Ooh, look at me! I don't care about other people!"
"Uh... okay. What do you recommend?"
"Um... well... Hey! Look over there!"

Nothing bad ever happens to me
Nothing bad ever happens to me
    Why should I care?
A man broke into my neighborhood
He threatened the family with a loaded gun
He tied them all up and beat 'em real good
He took everything and he got away clean
And I can't believe that anyone would
Wanna do such a terrible thing
    But why should I care?
Did you hear about Fred, he's unemployed
They threw him away like a useless toy
He went down the drain after 20 long years
No warning, no pension and nobody's tears
And I can't believe that anyone would
Wanna do such a terrible thing
But why should I care? Why should I care?
Every time I look around this place

    @EatingYourWAFFLES Před 2 lety +7

Ok, I'd like to analyze this song since others seem to be getting something different out of it. To me, *this* song isn't about feeling justified ignoring suffering in the tragic world news we are bombarded with. Rather, it's about ignoring bad events your immediate area. Every person the speaker refers to is near him in some way. The house that got robbed was close by ("in my neighborhood"), the man who got fired / family who had a death were people he seemed to already know ("Did you hear about Fred?" / "Did you hear about the Joneses?"), and he says "the terrible things happen *down the road*". So unfortunately, the apathy that may be appropriate for worldwide tragedy has extended to the speaker's immediate friends and neighbors. To me, the song is a reminder to not get so overwhelmed that you start to ignore the suffering of people that are actually close enough for you to help. Friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc. And why doesn't he care to help? Well... lack of foresight. Denial. After all, "Nothing Bad Ever Happens To Me." And presumably, when something bad does inevitably happen to the speaker, he will reap what he has sown.
As a side note, I discovered Oingo Boingo before the pandemic and used to listen to this song all the time when I still lived in LA. This song reminds me of walking to school on a sunny day, palm trees, my old apartment and a (relatively) more carefree time.

I like your take and agree with it. I discovered Oingo Boingo in the 80s when they emerged and this video made a huge impression on me. It is interesting that the comments that express the idea that "there's too much going on for me to be concerned about and this video helps me realize that there is nothing I can do" - have gotten the most likes.

@@gaywizard2000 Yeah but there’s a personal reason for Danny why it’s ubiquitous in his work. Even outside the 80s, I’m pretty sure there’s a nuke in the background of one of his new videos. He wanted to be a radiation scientist before he knew that he had musical talent and to this day he’s obsessed with x-rays and even made a music video using MRIs of his own brain.
