The bill bans public school districts from teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through the third grade, or “in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students”. The first part isn't as much of an issue as the 2nd part and who is deciding what is "age-appropriate" and at what grade level. School districts could easily interpet this as meaning sexual orientation should not be discussed at all while students are in public schools at any grade level which clearly is wrong.

Admirable. I’m 59 and straight. I remember how gay men were demonised during the early 1980’s and I made a small stand against that prejudice back then. Society has moved forward but I find it incredible that some legislators want to push your country back to a time of even more prejudice. As a Brit I can only hope that those people, with their small minds but in positions of influence, fail and that the subject can be raised in every one of your educational establishments.

The same husband who got thrown in jail with me when we tried to get a marriage license in Texas and refused to leave when we didn't get one in 2012. This "Don't Say Gay" thing will lead to them trying to take away our right to get married, and then, the partner of a person going through chemo and cancer could be not allowed in the hospital room with their loved one because they are not family. If the government is telling him he can't say GAY, does that not go against the first Amendment. You know freedom of speech without government persecution. It seems florida does not like the constitutional 1st amendment.

So deeply appreciate Zander Moricz, his friends, family and fellow protesters, and his educators. Here is what I wrote when I posted this to my own community:
"This is under 10 minutes of a valedictorian speech out of Florida. The teen who is speaking is forced to speak in metaphors in some of the speech and it is both brilliant and theatrical. You may have seen the truncated part that is only about the metaphor, but that does his granular point an injustice.
"This speech has made me realize (again and again) that no battle ever wins a war, and that the efforts of those who demanded their right to their identity in former generations was not in vain, it is just that those who hold power, who are trying to take us all down in their weird capitalism death spiral, are simply in one of their stronger attacks.
"We need all hands on deck, if you do not agree with their death spiral. They have the $$$ but we have the people.
"If you want to reconcile with the past and want your children to be free, you will have to fight for it.
"Please watch as this new voter, who is the same age as my second child, lays out the way forward, whilst also showing us in real time the spirit of the fighters for justice, LGBTQ2S+ rights and a better world. Be inspired. And get active."
Zander, you echo those who previously fought for their rights, and yours as a "future generation", and you continue this fight for freedom and safety together with those around you. Across the world, we fight to be free and to live as our true selves, despite those who wish to profit from our suppression. Today I deeply appreciate your choice and your incredible style and wit, and what you've done already for future generations. Congratulations for making it through your high school years in the chaos upon which we find ourselves. Remember to rest. Together we are stronger.
    karen, Vancouver, Canada
