  • This video is to show how I shade a dog nose when working with charcoal. I can do a separate video for drawing nose outlines if people should request this. I go through all the steps in real time...no sped up footage in this video..showing all of the layers and how I approach them to get to the final result. My charcoal style is a bit more loose than my acrylic style and i do enjoy being able to dabble in more styles these days.
I filmed the making of this nose whilst working on a commissioned portrait so you will see the rest of the dog having progressed between clips.
All of the supplies I am using plus more that i use generally are listed below.

i've heard of that "ugly" part of the process called the "ugly duckling phase". sometimes i share my work with my husband when it is "in process", and it is in the "ugly duckling phase" and he can't understand that it has to be ugly before it gets to the final product.
does that harder charcoal pencil also blend?
    thanks for another great video!!

Hi....yes the harder charcoal pencil does blend with the stump just fine.
The ugly stage can be scary for sure. Some non artists really can't get their heads around it and it can take many beginner artists a long time to get accustomed to it.
