I’d rather just use a pencil an nothing else. Which is what most artists into realism do so they can control what is shaded.
@@lenatunji the man got his first step wrong. NEVER USE MECHANICAL PENCIL, just use steadlar 6b or 4b

Some notes:
Step 1: Sketch (take your time)
Step 2: Add shading to sketch with pencil, mostly hatching (not much details, to visualize value of shadow)
Step 3: Add shading using charcoal with makeup brush
Step 4: Blending with cotton ball (working on the skin tone)
Step 5: Add 1st layer of details (Mechanical pencil, charcoal, shading details, highlights with kneaded eraser)
Step 6: Working on hair (light brush strokes first then darkening)
Step 7: Add 2nd layer of details (using 6B pencil, remove dust)
Step 8: Shadow
Step 9: Add highlights (use kneaded eraser for tiny highlights, that you can find in the hair)
Step 10: 3rd layer of details: hair with mechanical pencil, highlights with pencil

It has been 7 years, nagquit ako dati dahil lagi akong nakatanggap ng criticisms sa drawings ko, nag uumpisa palang ako nun pero diko talaga kinaya mga negative comments. Then recently, I bought art materials again. Starting to rebuild myself. Tapos ito nga out of nowhere lumabas videos mo sa reccomended at di ako nagsisi nung pinanuod ko. Dami kong natutunan at sana dumami pa. I keep on watching your videoa, very informative lalo saming nag uumpisa palang. Worth it pagsubscribe ko! Kudos! Thanks for inspiring. When application of charcoal becomes difficult, one can spray or apply 90% alcohol and (after drying, 2 mins) the surface will accept more. I used this technique for years as a medical illustrator; it can be used on drafting film or clay board (the original board was called “Ross #00)).
it amazes me how you can draw in a freehand style, I love your art and your videos. They are so realistic and shows every process, that's rare.

i used to use charcoal powder in my drawings but theni went through a rough patch with my art and got rid of it along with other supplies. now i'm experimenting more with charcoal and seeing your art makes me want to try using powder again. you have a very cool technique, thanks for sharing :)

I started using a soft headed make up brush to assist in shading my artwork about a year ago and it made a world of a difference in my final art projects
Honestly I picked up using makeup brushes for blending from u , and it truly made a huge difference thank u
