    I think this is a very helpful drawing tutorial, Grace. As an animal artist myself, it's very interesting to see the differences we like to draw. I especially find interesting you draw the fur with the triangle technique, as i don't do that at all. I must say your technique is incredible as your work is so detailed and beautiful!

    Grace thank you for this video, it helped me out immensely, I do hair with an airbrush and it took me almost two years to perfect the dagger stroke which is used in airbrushing to do fur. It takes awhile to do fur with an airbrush and too many factors can screw up your piece, air pressure or the paint decides to start drying in the pot. Doing fur in graphite is so much more soothing than with the airbrush. Thanks again!

      You're very welcome, I'm so glad it was helpful! I commend your patience creating fur with the airbrush. It is such a good tool though 🙏

    • @EvilMP5

    Hi Grace, I am a VERY early beginner in graphite. I want so bad to learn to draw pets and people. I thought I would start with my husbands GSP. I have searched and searched for a drawing tutorial on a GSP. I finally stumbled on your channel while watching another artist. When I saw the picture of this dog I almost screamed in delight 😊. The fur on a GSP is so different than other dogs because the hair is so short and all the spots. I have practiced the fur in so many different ways but it just didn’t look right. You explained the stroke so well and how to get the white in as well as their dark spots. I can’t wait to try it. I would love it if you could do another one that shows more of the body. I want to do a drawing for my daughter who now has my Piper Jo. I moved after my husband passed and didn’t have anywhere for her to burn off all of her energy. She is a BEAUTIFUL dog. I want so bad to do her justice.
    I hope to see many more of your tutorials in the future. Your work is AMAZING!!!! This dog is just as beautiful 😍

      @@gracemurrayart Hi! I definitely did not expect you to reply. I'm so used of commenting and never getting a reply, so I just assume everyone is too busy, lol. But, you did....twice! Thanks!
      I am no longer a watercolorist, pastelist and pencil artist. I am actually a silk painter, but I have some experience in the former areas. For example when I painted people and pet portraits I sometimes would use watercolor paper and wet the paper then put down my underpainting. When it's wet you can move it around and once dry it won't move at all. The water to pigment ratio takes some trial and error (at least for me it did) to find the "perfect" mix(?).
      Anyway, I hope the Stonehenge Vellum works out for you. I found it to be a beautiful paper and a silky surface. It makes the marks we make on it look better😉
      Btw, your work is beautiful!
      God Bless 😊

    Hi Grace great video, The paper that I use is St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford 300gram Hot Press, I have also just started using Arches Aquerelle 356gram. I emboss texture and both of these are very tough. The one to avoid is Fabriano Artistico as when the company was taken over a few years ago they changed the manufacturing process and it now has a horrible surface to it that really stands out with graphite. For shading I find a blending stump is really good but they do vary from one make to another, the ones that work best have a velvety feel to the end and they blend graphite smoothly. Hope this is helpful.

    • @JamieBoots
      @JamieBoots Před 2 lety

      @@gracemurrayart Hi Grace, I don't know if this is also of help but I found the best way to flatten paper off of a roll, is to put a piece of paper on top of the piece you've cut off and iron it flat. These watercolour papers are notoriously difficult to flatten out. The other way you can do it is to tape it down and wet it as when it dries it will stretch and flatten out. If you are going to be buying a lot of paper then you may want to contact R K Burt in London as they are the wholesaler for art papers in the UK. I've used them for many years and they have been excellent. Hope this helps, Jamie

    Isn't there a easyer way to load your mechanical pencil? Remove the top and put down the graphite? or is it it can be used with different size graphite?

    Grace, I’ve looked closely at the start of the dogs ear dark shading and it looks to me like the flow of the fur is more vertical than the angle you start your shading? I’m having difficulty with short and long fur in smaller size drawings - is this normal?

    Hi, i have a cheap bic 0.8 mechanical pencil, will that work for the fur or does it need to be the o.5 cause it is not working out

    Hi Grace, not only are you gorgeous but your art is as well! I know you drew this Shorthair Pointer a year ago but if you drew this in colored pencil, would your technique be the same? I am attempting to draw a German Shorthair Pointer in colored pencil but I am totally lost at how to do the mix of the dark brown hairs and white hairs mixed together, like on the neck. I don’t think embossing tool will work, too much white hair or the slice tool. How would you go about doing this? Thank you, Karen

    • @gracemurrayart
      @gracemurrayart  Před rokem

      Hi Karen, thank you so much for your kind words! That's a good question - I'd definitely say my technique with coloured pencil is very similar to the one with graphite, adding in those triangle shapes and leaving the negative space in between to fill in with the lighter colour! Let me know how you get on 🤎

    Love the tutorial, thanks heaps for the video. Would this technique work for longer fur as well? Also what is the thing under your hand to prevent the smudging? I currently use a piece of paper but like the look of what you are using since it’s see through.

      I'm glad it was helpful Jessica! 😊I've actually got a vide going live tomorrow showing how I use this technique with longer fur! In this video I'm just using a cellophane sheet, but usually I use glassine paper x

    maybe im missing something, but I don't see a single triangle when you say you're using triangles. I see straight lines - some curve one way, some curve the other way, but no triangles in sight.

    • @gracemurrayart
      @gracemurrayart  Před rokem +1

      The two separating strands create the shape of the top of a triangle (without the bottom part) - I definitely could have thought of a better name for it but it came about and it stuck 😂
