  • Pre-planning is used in all aspects of the horizontal directional drilling process. Whether it is planning the jobsite layout or the restoration, there should be a plan for it. Creating a bore plan gives you specific depths to follow and allows you to efficiently execute the pilot bore. Learn how to create a bore plan on the jobsite in this video.

This makes so much sense … thought it would be more complicated

You have to understand that the rod don't magically switch from 10 - 15% before being pushed. Meaning that you will go deeper than predicted depth using quick math

It also has to do alot with the kind of soil too

I'm always used Atlas Boreplanner to creating HDD bore planning. It's more simple and easy to use.

That 10% kick off is hard on everything. Loose enough soil you’re creating a key slot

This assumes the ground to lay perfectly flat - which it often refuses to do

what happens if the surveyor doesnt provide depths of conflicting utilities?
I just have the aerial layout of it

You need to pothole all conflicting utilities so you don't damage them while drilling

Do you need a specific license to perform work?

depends on where you work. Some unions may require a CDL to operate vehicles that transport the drill machines. Some contractors may not need that, and will simply train you if you can get in their company

@@mr.m.3280 No, you do not need anything special (license or certificate) to operate a Bore rig. You just got to work your way into the industry. Most guys begin as helpers for the Bore crews. You'll be doing a lot of hand digging and getting dirty but eventually (and with some luck) you will eventually be shown how to operate a drill which isn't difficult but you gotta know how to approach any scenario which is where it's challenging
