  • With only two charges under my belt I took the Ioniq5 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Overall had a great experience, especially with ElectrifyAmerica. But if you have ever been curious how it is driving to and from Las Vegas with not a Tesla, enjoy!

    I said the other day when you first cluelessly rented this Ioniq 5 that you’ll become an EV charging expert in a week. It took you just couple of days to talk like an experienced EV driver! Amazing!

      We bought our EV6 and drove from south of LA to San Francisco 3 days later. We became experts quickly on how to find stations and get over charging anxiety.

    Thanks for showing the EA 350kwH experience in Baker. That was fast.
    Tesla had enormous number superchargers along I-5 between SF and LA too, really surprised me when I did that drive several months ago. Would have no charge anxiety on their network at all. But yeah, it does add some extra time to any long trip.
    For ChargePoint, you can add your pass to Apple Wallet and just scan from there to start the party.
    I agree a home charger should be available for a security deposit or something for those renting who can charge at home. Overnight charges at 120V can cover most regular weekday driving.

    I've done the drive from Corona to Vegas a handful of times in my EV6. I'd never stop at those slow DC chargers at the Barstow outlets. You should easily make it to Baker from your home which has much faster DC charging capabilities. Coming home, charge at Electrify America in Vegas (we go to the Premium Outlets South) and then top off to 80% in Baker again which takes all of 10-15 minutes. Straight home after that. The highest speed you'll likely get on those Baker EA chargers is 240kw. The cars themselves are not currently built to handle 350kw charge. For your drive, your biggest challenge to range was using sport mode. If you would have kept in ECO mode you could have easily charged in Baker and made it all the way home.

    If you wanna get better range, turn it to a drive mode other than sport. Just press the drive mode button on the wheel. Eco is great for long drives

      This. Really no reason to use sport on a long drive. We are eco mode with higher regen for those long downhills at times, at least to and from Vegas. We actually get energy back coming down the Cajon Pass.

    DC just means direct current, CCS is a type of DC charger (or charging standard for pedants), likewise CHDdeMO which was the other plug on the ChargePoint+ station is also a DC charger. Type 2 chargers are AC, alternating current.
    You're right about the tapering, it's different depending on the EV and other factors, but most will slow down pretty sharply at 80%. EVs have a 'charging curve', often peaking before 50% and slowing gradually after that point, but 80% is when it often gets so slow it isn't worth waiting any longer.

    About the charging cables, check the trunk, under the floor. EV's usually have a lot of space under the floor of the trunk and most people use that to store the charging cables. Btw, slower DC charging like the chargepoint charger are ideal when you want to have dinner or do any other activity whick takes you away from your car for a longer period of time.

    Great video man keep it up. I have an EV6 my self. I live in NV so every time we go to CA we stop at baker to top off and from there Barstow or Hesperia depending on how strong the winds are from baker to Barstow. Oh one more thing there are electrifie America charges at the Walmart in Barstow and Hesperia so the next time if you rent or buy your self an EV and go to Las Vegas you could use them as a quicker charge.

    • @sak4aak
      @sak4aak Před měsícem

      Hesperia is the fastest EA charger we've come across on that drive to Vegas. That being said, we only stop there if absolutely needed. 99% of the time, it's Baker for us.

    What day of the week was the stop in Baker? I would expect way more cars if it was a fri/sat/sun

    Betting the reader on that Barstow chargepoint station wasn’t working. If you installed the chargepoint card into Apple wallet it should have automatically popped up to ask you to double press the lock button on your phone when you placed your phone by the reader. I’ve experienced a broken reader before at one of Chargepoint HQ’s own chargers

    I'm guessing your Mirai doesn't quite have the range, to make the same trip, due to lack of hydrogen stations?

    • @brushlessmotoring
      @brushlessmotoring Před 2 měsíci

      It has the range if you keep it below 65, but there isn't a filling station in Vegas - there is hydrogen production - but no 700 bar retail station.

      Already a thing, just like it is for a gasoline cars. Had my EV 4 years, 50,000 miles approx., has not spontaneously combusted yet, but I'm covered if it does!

    You have to select a credit card to tap your phone. Have you never paid with your iPhone before? Double tap your side button.

    Have you never paid with a phone before ? You have to select a card.
    Also you should go to 350kw chargers not slow ones.
    Rent a Tesla next time, charging is seamless.

      @mrpogi23 Před 2 měsíci

      @@awokiii7905 yea but the vlogger is really clueless, non-Tesla EVs has much faster stations than Tesla.. they are just not as reliable or not "enough" unlike Tesla stations can have 20-100 stations per site while EA has 4-10 stations per site. Thats the difference. But its just wasteful when he has a 800V EV that can charge less than 18 mins and he's using the SLOWEST stations you can possibly use on a road trip because he's clueless.
